The null-machine code used to be target specific since it used the
target-specific cpu_init() function in the past. But in the recent
commit 2278b93941 ("Use cpu_create(type) instead of
cpu_init(cpu_model)") this has been change, so that the code now
uses the common cpu_create() function instead. Thus we can put
the null-machine into the common-obj list so that it is compiled
only once for all targets, to save some compilation time.

When [2] was fixed it was agreed that adding and calling post_plug()
callback after device_reset() was low risk approach to hotfix issue
right before release. So it was merged instead of moving already
existing plug() callback after device_reset() is called which would
be more risky and require all plug() callbacks audit.
Looking at the current plug() callbacks, it doesn't seem that moving
plug() callback after device_reset() is breaking anything, so here
goes agreed upon [3] proper fix which essentially reverts [1][2]
and moves plug() callback after device_reset().
This way devices always comes to plug() stage, after it's been fully
initialized (including being reset), which fixes race condition [2]
without need for an extra post_plug() callback.

Some SysBusDevices either use sysbus_init_mmio() without
sysbus_mmio_map() or the first MMIO memory region doesn't represent the
bus address, causing a firmware device path with an invalid address to
be generated.
SysBusDeviceClass does provide a virtual explicit_ofw_unit_address()
method that can be used to override this process, but it was originally intended
only as as a fallback option meaning that any existing MMIO memory regions still
take priority whilst determining the firmware device address.
There is currently only one user of explicit_ofw_unit_address() and that
is the PCI expander bridge (PXB) device which has no MMIO/PIO resources
defined. This enables us to allow explicit_ofw_unit_address() to take
priority without affecting backwards compatibility, allowing the address
to be customised as required.

This file format is often used with microcontrollers such as the
micro:bit, Arduino, STM32, etc. Users expect to be able to run .hex
files directly with without first converting them to ELF. Most
micro:bit code is developed in web-based IDEs without direct user access
to binutils so it is important for QEMU to handle this file format

The rom_ptr() function allows direct access to the ROM blobs that we
load during startup. However, there are currently no checks for the
size of the accesses, so it's currently possible to crash QEMU for
example with:
$ echo "Insane in the mainframe" > /tmp/test.txt
$ s390x-softmmu/qemu-system-s390x -kernel /tmp/test.txt -append xyz
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
$ s390x-softmmu/qemu-system-s390x -kernel /tmp/test.txt -initrd /tmp/test.txt

$ echo -n HdrS > /tmp/hdr.txt
$ sparc64-softmmu/qemu-system-sparc64 -kernel /tmp/hdr.txt -initrd /tmp/hdr.txt
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
We need a possibility to check the size of the ROM area that we want
to access, thus let's add a size parameter to the rom_ptr() function
to avoid these problems.

The tricky part is retaining the migration compatibility for
existing OR gates; we add a subsection which is only used
for larger OR gates, and define it such that we can freely
increase MAX_OR_LINES in future (or even move to a dynamically

object_property_add_link() and later with object_property_set_link().
add_link() doesn't add a reference to the target object, while
set_link() does.
Furthemore, OBJ_PROP_LINK_UNREF_ON_RELEASE flags, set during add_link,
says whether a reference must be released when the property is destroyed.
This can lead to leaks if the property was later set_link(), as the
added reference is never released.
Instead, rename OBJ_PROP_LINK_UNREF_ON_RELEASE to OBJ_PROP_LINK_STRONG

platform-bus were using machine_done notifier to get and map
(assign irq/mmio resources) dynamically added sysbus devices
after all '-device' options had been processed.
That however creates non obvious dependencies on ordering of
machine_done notifiers and requires carefull line juggling
to keep it working. For example see comment above
create_platform_bus() and 'straitforward' arm_load_kernel()
had to converted to machine_done notifier and that lead to
yet another machine_done notifier to keep it working
arm_register_platform_bus_fdt_creator().
Instead of hiding resource assignment in platform-bus-device
to magically initialize sysbus devices, use device plug
callback and assign resources explicitly at board level
at the moment each -device option is being processed.
That adds a bunch of machine declaration boiler plate to
e500plat board, similar to ARM/x86 but gets rid of hidden
machine_done notifier and would allow to remove the dependent
notifiers in ARM code simplifying it and making code flow
easier to follow.

With all targets defining CPU_RESOLVING_TYPE, refactor
cpu_parse_cpu_model(type, cpu_model) to parse_cpu_model(cpu_model)
so that callers won't have to know internal resolving cpu
type. Place it in exec.c so it could be called from both
target independed vl.c and *-user/main.c.
That allows us to stop abusing cpu type from
MachineClass::default_cpu_type
as resolver class in vl.c which were confusing part of
cpu_parse_cpu_model().
Also with new parse_cpu_model(), the last users of cpu_init()
in null-machine.c and bsd/linux-user targets could be switched
to cpu_create() API and cpu_init() API will be removed by
follow up patch.
With no longer users left remove MachineState::cpu_model field,

leave cpu_model parsing to generic code in vl.c.

The previous commit improved compile time by including less of the
generated QAPI headers. This is impossible for stuff defined directly
in qapi-schema.json, because that ends up in headers that that pull in
everything.
Move everything but include directives from qapi-schema.json to new
sub-module qapi/misc.json, then include just the "misc" shard where
possible.
It's possible everywhere, except:
* monitor.c needs qmp-command.h to get qmp_init_marshal()
* monitor.c, ui/vnc.c and the generated qapi-event-FOO.c need
qapi-event.h to get enum QAPIEvent

In some board or SoC models it is necessary to split a qemu_irq line
so that one input can feed multiple outputs. We currently have
qemu_irq_split() for this, but that has several deficiencies:
* it can only handle splitting a line into two
* it unavoidably leaks memory, so it can't be used
in a device that can be deleted
Implement a qdev device that encapsulates splitting of IRQs, with a
configurable number of outputs. (This is in some ways the inverse of

this is what you want, but in some cases it would be helpful to use
some other data pointer.
Add a new function qdev_init_gpio_in_named_with_opaque() which allows
the caller to specify the data pointer they want.

Remove dependency of possible_cpus on 1st CPU instance,
which decouples configuration data from CPU instances that
are created using that data.
Also later it would be used for enabling early cpu to numa node
configuration at runtime qmp_query_hotpluggable_cpus() should
provide a list of available cpu slots at early stage,
before machine_init() is called and the 1st cpu is created,
so that mgmt might be able to call it and use output to set
numa mapping.
Use MachineClass::possible_cpu_arch_ids() callback to set
cpu type info, along with the rest of possible cpu properties,
to let machine define which cpu type* will be used.
* for SPAPR it will be a spapr core type and for ARM/s390x/x86

The qdev_unplug() function contains a g_assert(hotplug_ctrl) statement,
so QEMU crashes when the user tries to device_add + device_del a device
that does not have a corresponding hotplug controller. This could be
provoked for a couple of devices in the past (see commit 4c93950659
or 84ebd3e8c7 for example), and can currently for example also be
triggered like this:
$ s390x-softmmu/qemu-system-s390x -M none -nographic
QEMU 2.10.50 monitor - type 'help' for more information
(qemu) device_add qemu-s390x-cpu,id=x
(qemu) device_del x
**
ERROR:qemu/qdev-monitor.c:872:qdev_unplug: assertion failed: (hotplug_ctrl)
Aborted (core dumped)
So devices clearly need a hotplug controller when they should be usable
with device_add.
The code in qdev_device_add() already checks whether the bus has a proper
hotplug controller, but for devices that do not have a corresponding bus,
there is no appropriate check available yet. In that case we should check
whether the machine itself provides a suitable hotplug controller and
refuse to plug the device if none is available.

DEVICE_DEL is currently emitted when a Device is unparented, as
opposed to when it is finalized. The main design motivation for this
seems to be that after unparent()/unrealize(), the Device is no
longer visible to the guest, and thus the operation is complete
from the perspective of management.
However, there are cases where remaining host-side cleanup is also
pertinent to management. The is generally handled by treating these
resources as aspects of the "backend", which can be managed via
separate interfaces/events, such as blockdev_add/del, netdev_add/del,
object_add/del, etc, but some devices do not have this level of
compartmentalization, namely vfio-pci, and possibly to lend themselves
well to it.
In the case of vfio-pci, the "backend" cleanup happens as part of
the finalization of the vfio-pci device itself, in particular the
cleanup of the VFIO group FD. Failing to wait for this cleanup can
result in tools like libvirt attempting to rebind the device to
the host while it's still being used by VFIO, which can result in
host crashes or other misbehavior depending on the host driver.
Deferring DEVICE_DEL still affords us the ability to manage backends
explicitly, while also addressing cases like vfio-pci's, so we
implement that approach here.
An alternative proposal involving having VFIO emit a separate event
to denote completion of host-side cleanup was discussed, but the
prevailing opinion seems to be that it is not worth the added
complexity, and leaves the issue open for other Device implementations
to solve in the future.

This reverts commit abed886ec6.
This patch originally addressed an issue where a DEVICE_DELETED
event could be emitted (in device_unparent()) before a Device's
QemuOpts were cleaned up (in device_finalize()), leading to a
"duplicate ID" error if management attempted to immediately add
a device with the same ID in response to the DEVICE_DELETED event.
An alternative will be implemented in a subsequent patch where we
defer the DEVICE_DELETED event until device_finalize(), which would
also prevent the race, so we revert the original fix in preparation.

device_unparent(dev, ...) is called when a device is unparented,
either directly, or as a result of a parent device being
finalized, and handles some final cleanup for the device. Part
of this includes emiting a DEVICE_DELETED QMP event to notify
management, which includes the device's path in the composition
tree as provided by object_get_canonical_path().
object_get_canonical_path() assumes the device is still connected
to the machine/root container, and will assert otherwise, but
in some situations this isn't the case:
If the parent is finalized as a result of object_unparent(), it
will still be attached to the composition tree at the time any
children are unparented as a result of that same call to
object_unparent(). However, in some cases, object_unparent()
will complete without finalizing the parent device, due to
lingering references that won't be released till some time later.
One such example is if the parent has MemoryRegion children (which
take a ref on their parent), who in turn have AddressSpace's (which
take a ref on their regions), since those AddressSpaces get cleaned
up asynchronously by the RCU thread.
In this case qdev:device_unparent() may be called for a child Device
that no longer has a path to the root/machine container, causing
object_get_canonical_path() to assert.
Fix this by storing the canonical path during realize() so the
information will still be available for device_unparent() in such
cases.

Calculating default node-ids for CPUs in possible_cpu_arch_ids()
is rather fragile since defaults calculation uses nb_numa_nodes but
callback might be potentially called early before all -numa CLI
options are parsed, which would lead to cpus assigned only upto
nb_numa_nodes at the time possible_cpu_arch_ids() is called.
Issue was introduced by
(7c88e65 numa: mirror cpu to node mapping in MachineState::possible_cpus)
and for example CLI:
-smp 4 -numa node,cpus=0 -numa node
would set props.node-id in possible_cpus array for every non
explicitly mapped CPU to the first node.
Issue is not visible to guest nor to mgmt interface due to
1) implictly mapped cpus are forced to the first node in
case of partial mapping
2) in case of default mapping possible_cpu_arch_ids() is
called after all -numa options are parsed (resulting
in correct mapping).
However it's fragile to rely on late execution of
possible_cpu_arch_ids(), therefore add machine specific
callback that returns node-id for CPU and use it to calculate/
set defaults at machine_numa_finish_init() time when all -numa
options are parsed.

The current code recursively applies global properties from child up to
parent types. This can cause properties passed with the -global option to
be silently overridden by internal compat properties.
This is exactly what happened with virtio-*-pci drivers since commit:
"9a4c0e220d8a hw/virtio-pci: fix virtio behaviour"
Passing -device virtio-blk-pci.disable-modern=off had no effect on 2.6
machine types because the internal virtio-pci.disable-modern=on compat
property always prevailed.
A workaround for this was included with commit 0bcba41f ("machine:
Convert abstract typename on compat_props to subclass names").
This patch fixes the issue properly by reversing the logic: we now go
through the global property list and, for each property, we check if it
is applicable to the device.
This results in compat properties being applied first, in the order they
appear in the HW_COMPAT_* macros, followed by global properties, in the
order they appear on the command line.

In some situations it's useful to have a qdev property which doesn't
automatically set its default value when qdev_property_add_static is
called (for instance when the default value is not constant).
Support this by adding a flag to the Property struct indicating
whether to set the default value. This replaces the existing test
for whether the PropertyInfo set_default_value function pointer is
NULL, and we set the .set_default field to true for all those cases
of struct Property which use a PropertyInfo with a non-NULL
set_default_value, so behaviour remains the same as before.
This gives us the semantics of:
* if .set_default is true, then .info->set_default_value must
be not NULL, and .defval is used as the the default value of
the property
* otherwise, the property system does not set any default, and
the field will retain whatever initial value it was given by
the device's .instance_init method
We define two new macros DEFINE_PROP_SIGNED_NODEFAULT and
DEFINE_PROP_UNSIGNED_NODEFAULT, to cover the most plausible use cases
of wanting to set an integer property with no default value.

It fixes/add missing _PXM object for non mapped CPU (x86)
and missing fdt node (virt-arm).
It ensures that possible_cpus contains complete mapping if
numa is enabled by the time machine_init() is executed.
As result non completely mapped CPUs:
1) appear in ACPI/fdt blobs
2) QMP query-hotpluggable-cpus command shows bound nodes for such CPUs
3) allows to drop checks for has_node_id in numa only code,
reducing number of invariants incomplete mapping could produce
4) moves fixup/implicit node init from runtime numa_cpu_pre_plug()
(when CPU object is created) to machine_numa_finish_init() which
helps to fix [1, 2] and make possible_cpus complete source
of numa mapping available even before CPUs are created.

commit 33cd52b5d7 unset
cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet in TYPE_SYSBUS, making all
sysbus devices appear on "-device help" and lack the "no-user"
flag in "info qdm".
To fix this, we can set user_creatable=false by default on
TYPE_SYS_BUS_DEVICE, but this requires setting
user_creatable=true explicitly on the sysbus devices that
actually work with -device.
Fortunately today we have just a few has_dynamic_sysbus=1
machines: virt, pc-q35-*, ppce500, and spapr.
virt, ppce500, and spapr have extra checks to ensure just a few
device types can be instantiated:
* virt supports only TYPE_VFIO_CALXEDA_XGMAC, TYPE_VFIO_AMD_XGBE.
* ppce500 supports only TYPE_ETSEC_COMMON.
* spapr supports only TYPE_SPAPR_PCI_HOST_BRIDGE.
This patch sets user_creatable=true explicitly on those 4 device
classes.
Now, the more complex cases:
pc-q35-*: q35 has no sysbus device whitelist yet (which is a
separate bug). We are in the process of fixing it and building a
sysbus whitelist on q35, but in the meantime we can fix the
"-device help" and "info qdm" bugs mentioned above. Also, despite
not being strictly necessary for fixing the q35 bug, reducing the
list of user_creatable=true devices will help us be more
confident when building the q35 whitelist.
xen: We also have a hack at xen_set_dynamic_sysbus(), that sets
has_dynamic_sysbus=true at runtime when using the Xen
accelerator. This hack is only used to allow xen-backend devices
to be dynamically plugged/unplugged.
This means today we can use -device with the following 22 device
types, that are the ones compiled into the qemu-system-x86_64 and
qemu-system-i386 binaries:
* allwinner-ahci
* amd-iommu
* cfi.pflash01
* esp
* fw_cfg_io
* fw_cfg_mem
* generic-sdhci
* hpet
* intel-iommu
* ioapic
* isabus-bridge
* kvmclock
* kvm-ioapic
* kvmvapic
* SUNW,fdtwo
* sysbus-ahci
* sysbus-fdc
* sysbus-ohci
* unimplemented-device
* virtio-mmio
* xen-backend
* xen-sysdev
This patch adds user_creatable=true explicitly to those devices,
temporarily, just to keep 100% compatibility with existing
behavior of q35. Subsequent patches will remove
user_creatable=true from the devices that are really not meant to
user-creatable on any machine, and remove the FIXME comment from
the ones that are really supposed to be user-creatable. This is
being done in separate patches because we still don't have an
obvious list of devices that will be whitelisted by q35, and I
would like to get each device reviewed individually.

cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet was introduced by commit
efec3dd631 to replace no_user. It was
supposed to be a temporary measure.
When it was introduced, we had 54
cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines in the code.
Today (3 years later) this number has not shrunk: we now have
57 cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines. I think it
is safe to say it is not a temporary measure, and we won't see
the flag go away soon.
Instead of a long field name that misleads people to believe it
is temporary, replace it a shorter and less misleading field:
user_creatable.
Except for code comments, changes were generated using the

Introduce machine_set_cpu_numa_node() helper that stores
node mapping for CPU in MachineState::possible_cpus.
CPU and node it belongs to is specified by 'props' argument.
Patch doesn't remove old way of storing mapping in
numa_info[X].node_cpu as removing it at the same time
makes patch rather big. Instead it just mirrors mapping
in possible_cpus and follow up per target patches will
switch to possible_cpus and numa_info[X].node_cpu will
be removed once there isn't any users left.

When there are more nodes than available memory to put the minimum
allowed memory by node, all the memory is put on the last node.
This is because we put (ram_size / nb_numa_nodes) &
~((1 << mc->numa_mem_align_shift) - 1); on each node, and in this
case the value is 0. This is particularly true with pseries,
as the memory must be aligned to 256MB.
To avoid this problem, this patch uses an error diffusion algorithm [1]
to distribute equally the memory on nodes.
We introduce numa_auto_assign_ram() function in MachineClass
to keep compatibility between machine type versions.
The legacy function is used with pseries-2.9, pc-q35-2.9 and
pc-i440fx-2.9 (and previous), the new one with all others.

If the user currently tries to use the -kernel parameter, simply nothing
happens, and the user might get confused that there is nothing loaded
to memory, but also no error message has been issued. Since there is no
real generic way to load a kernel on all CPU types (but on some targets,
the generic loader can be used instead), issue an appropriate error
message here now to avoid the possible confusion.

The "hotplugged" property is user visible, but it was never meant
to be set by the user. There are probably multiple ways to break
or crash device code by overriding the property. For example, we
recently fixed a crash in rtc_set_memory() related to the
property (commit 26ef65beab).
There has been some discussion about making management software
use "hotplugged=on" on migration, to indicate devices that were
hotplugged in the migration source. There were other suggestions
to address this, like including the "hotplugged" field in the
migration stream instead of requiring it to be set explicitly.
Whatever solution we choose in the future, this patch disables
setting "hotplugged" explicitly in the command-line by now,
because the ability to set the property is unused, untested, and
undocumented.

But when "-numa" option is provided without "mem" parameter,
the memory is equally divided between nodes, but 8MB aligned.
This can be not valid for pseries.
In that case we can have:

Original problem description by Greg Kurz:
> Since commit "9a4c0e220d8a hw/virtio-pci: fix virtio
> behaviour", passing -device virtio-blk-pci.disable-modern=off
> has no effect on 2.6 machine types because the internal
> virtio-pci.disable-modern=on compat property always prevail.
The same bug also affects other abstract type names mentioned on
compat_props by machine-types: apic-common, i386-cpu, pci-device,
powerpc64-cpu, s390-skeys, spapr-pci-host-bridge, usb-device,
virtio-pci, x86_64-cpu.
The right fix for this problem is to make sure compat_props and
-global options are always applied in the order they are
registered, instead of reordering them based on the type
hierarchy. But changing the ordering rules of -global is risky
and might break existing configurations, so we shouldn't do that
on a stable branch.
This is a temporary hack that will work around the bug when
registering compat_props properties: if we find an abstract class
on compat_props, register properties for all its non-abstract
subtypes instead. This will make sure -global won't be overridden
by compat_props, while keeping the existing ordering rules on
-global options.
Note that there's one case that won't be fixed by this hack:
"-global spapr-pci-vfio-host-bridge.<option>=<value>" won't be
able to override compat_props, because spapr-pci-host-bridge is
not an abstract class.

Apparently, none of the bus owner give a reference to the hotplug
handler property, do not unref it on bus release.
Furthermore, a bus is allowed to be its own hotplug handler, which can
be seen in qbus_set_bus_hotplug_handler() function. However, in this
case, the reference can't be given to the property, or this will create
a cyclic dependency and the bus will never be free.
Each bus owner should manage the lifecycle of the hotplug handler.

'dc->vmsd->unmigratable' which caused QEMU to crash when trying to add
devices which do no set their 'dc->vmsd' yet while initialization.
Place a 'dc->vmsd' check prior to it so that we do not segfault for
such devices.
NOTE: This doesn't compromise the functioning of --only-migratable
option as all the unmigratable devices do set their 'dc->vmsd'.
Introduce a new function check_migratable() and move the
only_migratable check inside it, also use stubs to avoid user-mode qemu

This finally allows TCG to benefit from the iothread introduction: Drop
the global mutex while running pure TCG CPU code. Reacquire the lock
when entering MMIO or PIO emulation, or when leaving the TCG loop.
We have to revert a few optimization for the current TCG threading
model, namely kicking the TCG thread in qemu_mutex_lock_iothread and not
kicking it in qemu_cpu_kick. We also need to disable RAM block
reordering until we have a more efficient locking mechanism at hand.
Still, a Linux x86 UP guest and my Musicpal ARM model boot fine here.
These numbers demonstrate where we gain something:
20338 jan 20 0 331m 75m 6904 R 99 0.9 0:50.95 qemu-system-arm
20337 jan 20 0 331m 75m 6904 S 20 0.9 0:26.50 qemu-system-arm
The guest CPU was fully loaded, but the iothread could still run mostly
independent on a second core. Without the patch we don't get beyond
32206 jan 20 0 330m 73m 7036 R 82 0.9 1:06.00 qemu-system-arm
32204 jan 20 0 330m 73m 7036 S 21 0.9 0:17.03 qemu-system-arm
We don't benefit significantly, though, when the guest is not fully
loading a host CPU.

Sometimes it is useful to have just a machine with CPU and RAM, without
any further hardware in it, e.g. if you just want to do some instruction
debugging for TCG with a remote GDB attached to QEMU, or run some embedded
code with the "-semihosting" QEMU parameter. qemu-system-m68k already
features a "dummy" machine, and xtensa a "sim" machine for exactly this
purpose.
All target architectures have nowadays also a "none" machine, which would
be a perfect match for this, too - but it currently does not allow to add
CPU and RAM yet. Thus let's add these possibilities in a generic way to the
"none" machine, too, so that we hopefully do not need additional "dummy"
machines in the future anymore (and maybe can also get rid of the already
existing "dummy"/"sim" machines one day).
Note that the default behaviour of the "none" machine is not changed, i.e.
no CPU and no RAM is instantiated by default. You have explicitely got to
specify the CPU model with "-cpu" and the amount of RAM with "-m" to get
these new features.

According to ISO C99 / N1256 (referenced in HACKING):

> In all other cases, the behavior is undefined.
Our AddressSpace objects are allocated generally individually, and kept in
the "address_spaces" linked list, so we mustn't compare their addresses
with relops.
Convert the pointers subjected to the relop in rom_order_compare() to
"uintptr_t":
> 7.18.1.4 Integer types capable of holding object pointers
>

> The following type designates an unsigned integer type with the
> property that any valid pointer to void can be converted to this type,
> then converted back to pointer to void, and the result will compare

* Commit 3e76099aac ("loader: Allow a custom AddressSpace when loading
ROMs") introduced the "Rom.as" field:
(1) It modified the utility callers of rom_insert() to take "as" as a
new parameter from *their* callers, and set "rom->as" from that
parameter. The functions covered were rom_add_file() and
rom_add_elf_program().
(2) It also modified rom_insert() itself, to auto-assign
"&address_space_memory", in case the external caller passed -- and
the utility caller forwarded -- as=NULL.
Except, commit 3e76099aac forgot to update the third utility caller of
rom_insert(), under point (1), namely rom_add_blob().
* Later, commit 5e774eb3bd ("loader: Add AddressSpace loading support
to uImages") added the load_uimage_as() function, and the
rom_add_blob_fixed_as() function-like macro, with the necessary changes
elsewhere to propagate the new "as" parameter to rom_add_blob():
load_uimage_as()
load_uboot_image()
rom_add_blob_fixed_as()
rom_add_blob()
At this point, the signature (and workings) of rom_add_blob() had been
broken already, and the rom_add_blob_fixed_as() macro passed its "_as"
parameter to rom_add_blob() as "callback_opaque". Given that the
"fw_callback" parameter itself was set to NULL (correctly), this did no
additional damage (the opaque arg would never be used), but ultimately
it broke the new functionality of load_uimage_as().
* The load_uimage_as() function would be put to use in one of the later
patches, commit e481a1f63c ("generic-loader: Add a generic loader").
* We can fix this only in a unified patch now. Append "AddressSpace *as"
to the signature of rom_add_blob(), and handle the new parameter. Pass
NULL from all current callers, except from rom_add_blob_fixed_as(),
where "_as" has to be bumped to the proper position.
* Note that rom_add_file() rejects the case when both "mr" and "as" are
passed in as non-NULL. The action that this is apparently supposed to
prevent is the
rom->mr = mr;
assignment (that's the only place where the "mr" parameter is used in
rom_add_file()). In rom_add_blob() though, we have no "mr" parameter,
and the actions done on the fw_cfg branch:
if (fw_file_name && fw_cfg) {
if (mc->rom_file_has_mr) {
data = rom_set_mr(rom, OBJECT(fw_cfg), devpath);
mr = rom->mr;
} else {
data = rom->data;
}
reflect those that are performed by rom_add_file() too (with mr==NULL):
if (rom->fw_file && fw_cfg) {
if ((!option_rom || mc->option_rom_has_mr) &&
mc->rom_file_has_mr) {
data = rom_set_mr(rom, OBJECT(fw_cfg), devpath);
} else {
data = rom->data;
}
Hence we need no additional restrictions in rom_add_blob().
* Stable is not affected as both problematic commits appeared first in
v2.8.0-rc0.

Currently, periodic timer that has load = delta = 0 performs trigger
on timer reload and stops, printing a "period zero" error message.
Introduce new policy that makes periodic timer to continuously trigger
with a period interval in case of load = 0.

Currently, periodic counter wraps around immediately once counter reaches
"0", this is wrong behaviour for some of the timers, resulting in one period
being lost. Add new ptimer policy that provides correct behaviour for such
timers, so that counter stays with "0" for a one period before wrapping
around.

Now that all front end use qemu_chr_fe_init(), we can move chardev
claiming in init(), and add a function deinit() to release the chardev
and cleanup handlers.
The qemu_chr_fe_claim_no_fail() for property are gone, since the
property will raise an error instead. In other cases, where there is
already an error path, an error is raised instead. Finally, other cases
are handled by &error_abort in qemu_chr_fe_init().

Add a generic loader to QEMU which can be used to load images or set
memory values.
Internally inside QEMU this is a device. It is a strange device that
provides no hardware interface but allows QEMU to monkey patch memory
specified when it is created. To be able to do this it has a reset
callback that does the memory operations.
This device allows the user to monkey patch memory. To be able to do
this it needs a backend to manage the datas, the same as other
memory-related devices. In this case as the backend is so trivial we
have merged it with the frontend instead of creating and maintaining a
seperate backend.

Functions of type FindSysbusDeviceFunc currently return an integer.
However, this return value is always ignored by the caller in
find_sysbus_device().
This changes the function type to return void, to avoid confusion over
