All isabus_dev_print() did was to print up to two IRQ numbers per
device. This is redundant if the IRQ numbers are present as QOM
properties (see e.g. the modified tests/qemu-iotests/172.out).
Now that the last devices relying on isabus_dev_print() had their IRQ
numbers QOM'ified, the contribution of this function ultimately became
redundant. Remove it.

When developing an I/O test it is typical to add some logic to the
test script, run it to view the output diff, and then apply the
output diff to the reference file. This can be drastically simplified
by letting the test runner update the reference file in place.
By setting 'QEMU_IOTESTS_REGEN=1', the test runner will report the
failure and show the diff, but at the same time update the reference
file. So next time the I/O test is run it will succeed.
Continuing to display the diff when updating the reference gives the
developer a chance to review what was changed.

Current scheme of image fleecing looks like this:
[guest] [NBD export]
| |
|root | root
v v
[copy-before-write] -----> [temp.qcow2]
| target |
|file |backing
v |
[active disk] <-------------+
- On guest writes copy-before-write filter copies old data from active
disk to temp.qcow2. So fleecing client (NBD export) when reads
changed regions from temp.qcow2 image and unchanged from active disk
through backing link.
This patch makes possible new image fleecing scheme:
[guest] [NBD export]
| |
| root | root
v file v
[copy-before-write]<------[snapshot-access]
| |
| file | target
v v
[active-disk] [temp.img]
- copy-before-write does CBW operations and also provides
snapshot-access API. The API may be accessed through
snapshot-access driver.
Benefits of new scheme:
1. Access control: if remote client try to read data that not covered
by original dirty bitmap used on copy-before-write open, client gets
-EACCES.
2. Discard support: if remote client do DISCARD, this additionally to
discarding data in temp.img informs block-copy process to not copy
these clusters. Next read from discarded area will return -EACCES.
This is significant thing: when fleecing user reads data that was
not yet copied to temp.img, we can avoid copying it on further guest
write.
3. Synchronisation between client reads and block-copy write is more
efficient. In old scheme we just rely on BDRV_REQ_SERIALISING flag
used for writes to temp.qcow2. New scheme is less blocking:
- fleecing reads are never blocked: if data region is untouched or
in-flight, we just read from active-disk, otherwise we read from
temp.img
- writes to temp.img are not blocked by fleecing reads
- still, guest writes of-course are blocked by in-flight fleecing
reads, that currently read from active-disk - it's the minimum
necessary blocking
4. Temporary image may be of any format, as we don't rely on backing
feature.
5. Permission relation are simplified. With old scheme we have to share
write permission on target child of copy-before-write, otherwise
backing link conflicts with copy-before-write file child write
permissions. With new scheme we don't have backing link, and
copy-before-write node may have unshared access to temporary node.
(Not realized in this commit, will be in future).
6. Having control on fleecing reads we'll be able to implement
alternative behavior on failed copy-before-write operations.
Currently we just break guest request (that's a historical behavior
of backup). But in some scenarios it's a bad behavior: better
is to drop the backup as failed but don't break guest request.
With new scheme we can simply unset some bits in a bitmap on CBW
failure and further fleecing reads will -EACCES, or something like
this. (Not implemented in this commit, will be in future)
Additional application for this is implementing timeout for CBW
operations.
Iotest 257 output is updated, as two more bitmaps now live in
copy-before-write filter.

Drop the use of OUTPUT_DIR (test/qemu-iotests under the build
directory), and instead write test output files (.out.bad, .notrun, and
.casenotrun) to TEST_DIR.
With this, the same test can be run concurrently without the separate
instances interfering, because they will need separate TEST_DIRs anyway.
Running the same test separately is useful when running the iotests with
various format/protocol combinations in parallel, or when you just want
to aggressively exercise a single test (e.g. when it fails only
sporadically).
Putting this output into TEST_DIR means that it will stick around for
inspection after the test run is done (though running the same test in
the same TEST_DIR will overwrite it, just as it used to be); but given
that TEST_DIR is a scratch directory, it should be clear that users can
delete all of its content at any point. (And if TEST_DIR is on tmpfs,
it will just disappear on shutdown.) Contrarily, alternative approaches
that would put these output files into OUTPUT_DIR with some prefix to
differentiate between separate test runs might easily lead to cluttering
OUTPUT_DIR.
(This change means OUTPUT_DIR is no longer written to by the iotests, so
we can drop its usage altogether.)

Instead of failing the iotests if GNU sed is not available (or skipping
them completely in the check-block.sh script), it would be better to
simply skip the bash-based tests that rely on GNU sed, so that the other
tests could still be run. Thus we now explicitely use "gsed" (either as
direct program or as a wrapper around "sed" if it's the GNU version)
in the spots that rely on the GNU sed behavior. Statements that use the
"-r" parameter of sed have been switched to use "-E" instead, since this
switch is supported by all sed versions on our supported build hosts
(most also support "-r", but macOS' sed only supports "-E"). With all
these changes in place, we then can also remove the sed checks from the
check-block.sh script, so that "make check-block" can now be run on
systems without GNU sed, too.

Each blockdev-add triggers bdrv_refresh_limits(), and because
blockdev-add runs in the main thread, it does not stop the I/O requests.
I/O can thus happen while the limits are refreshed, and when such a

this may easily crash qemu (or the storage daemon in this case).
The block layer needs to ensure that I/O requests to a node are paused

Move the permission API calls into driver-specific callbacks
that always run under BQL. In this case, bdrv_crypto_luks
needs to perform permission checks before and after
qcrypto_block_amend_options(). The problem is that the caller,
block_crypto_amend_options_generic_luks(), can also run in I/O
from .bdrv_co_amend(). This does not comply with Global State-I/O API split,
as permissions API must always run under BQL.
Firstly, introduce .bdrv_amend_pre_run() and .bdrv_amend_clean()
callbacks. These two callbacks are guaranteed to be invoked under
BQL, respectively before and after .bdrv_co_amend().
They take care of performing the permission checks
in the same way as they are currently done before and after
qcrypto_block_amend_options().
These callbacks are in preparation for next patch, where we
delete the original permission check. Right now they just add redundant
control.
Then, call .bdrv_amend_pre_run() before job_start in
qmp_x_blockdev_amend(), so that it will be run before the job coroutine
is created and stay in the main loop.
As a cleanup, use JobDriver's .clean() callback to call
.bdrv_amend_clean(), and run amend-specific cleanup callbacks under BQL.
After this patch, permission failures occur early in the blockdev-amend
job to update a LUKS volume's keys. iotest 296 must now expect them in
x-blockdev-amend's QMP reply instead of waiting for the actual job to
fail later.

Put an NBD block device into an I/O thread, and then read data from it,
hoping that the NBD connection will yield during that read. When it
does, the coroutine must be reentered in the block device's I/O thread,
which will only happen if the NBD block driver attaches the connection's
QIOChannel to the new AioContext. It did not do that after 4ddb5d2fde
("block/nbd: drop connection_co") and prior to "block/nbd: Move s->ioc
on AioContext change", which would cause an assertion failure.
To improve our chances of yielding, the NBD server is throttled to
reading 64 kB/s, and the NBD client reads 128 kB, so it should yield at
some point.

Prior to "block/nbd: Delete reconnect delay timer when done" and
"block/nbd: Delete open timer when done", both of those timers would
remain scheduled even after successfully (re-)connecting to the server,
and they would not even be deleted when the BDS is deleted.
This test constructs exactly this situation:
(1) Configure an @open-timeout, so the open timer is armed, and
(2) Configure a @reconnect-delay and trigger a reconnect situation
(which succeeds immediately), so the reconnect delay timer is armed.
Then we immediately delete the BDS, and sleep for longer than the
@open-timeout and @reconnect-delay. Prior to said patches, this caused
one (or both) of the timer CBs to access already-freed data.
Accessing freed data may or may not crash, so this test can produce
false successes, but I do not know how to show the problem in a better
or more reliable way. If you run this test on "block/nbd: Assert there
are no timers when closed" and without the fix patches mentioned above,
you should reliably see an assertion failure.
(But all other tests that use the reconnect delay timer (264 and 277)
will fail in that configuration, too; as will nbd-reconnect-on-open,
which uses the open timer.)
Remove this test from the quick group because of the two second sleep
this patch introduces.
(I decided to put this test case into 281, because the main bug this
series addresses is in the interaction of the NBD block driver and I/O
threads, which is precisely the scope of 281. The test case for that
other bug will also be put into the test class added here.
Also, excuse the test class's name, I couldn't come up with anything
better. The "yield" part will make sense two patches from now.)

This is a rather simple class that allows creating a QSD instance
running in the background and stopping it when no longer needed.
The __del__ handler is a safety net for when something goes so wrong in
a test that e.g. the tearDown() method is not called (e.g. setUp()
launches the QSD, but then launching a VM fails). We do not want the
QSD to continue running after the test has failed, so __del__() will

This allows us to pack in some extra information about the failure,
which guarantees that if the caller did not *intentionally* cause a
failure (by capturing this Exception), some pretty good clues will be
printed at the bottom of the traceback information.
This will help make failures in the event of a non-negative return code
more obvious when they go unhandled; the current behavior in
_post_shutdown() is to print a warning message only in the event of
signal-based terminations (for negative return codes).
(Note: In Python, catching BaseException instead of Exception catches a
broader array of Exception events, including SystemExit and
KeyboardInterrupt. We do not want to "wrap" such exceptions as a
VMLaunchFailure, because that will 'downgrade' the exception from a
BaseException to a regular Exception. We do, however, want to perform
cleanup in either case, so catch on the broadest scope and
wrap-and-re-raise only in the more targeted scope.)

Instead of qemu_img_log("info", ..) use generic helper img_info_log().
img_info_log() has smarter logic. For example it use filter_img_info()
to filter output, which in turns filter a compression type. So it will
help us in future when we implement a possibility to use zstd

build option). For now to test you should recompile qemu with a small
addition into block/qcow2.c before

Adding support of IMGOPTS (like in bash tests) allows user to pass a
lot of different options. Still, some may require additional logic.
Now we want compression_type option, so add some smart logic around it:
ignore compression_type=zstd in IMGOPTS, if test want qcow2 in
compatibility mode. As well, ignore compression_type for non-qcow2
formats.
Note that we may instead add support only to qemu_img_create(), but
that works bad:
1. We'll have to update a lot of tests to use qemu_img_create instead
of qemu_img('create'). (still, we may want do it anyway, but no
reason to create a dependancy between task of supporting IMGOPTS and
updating a lot of tests)
2. Some tests use qemu_img_pipe('create', ..) - even more work on
updating
3. Even if we update all tests to go through qemu_img_create, we'll
need a way to avoid creating new tests using qemu_img*('create') -
add assertions.. That doesn't seem good.
So, let's add support of IMGOPTS to most generic

This test assumes that mirror flushes the source when entering the READY
state, and that the format level will pass that flush on to the protocol
level (where we intercept it with blkdebug).
However, apparently that does not happen when using a VMDK image with
zeroed_grain=on, which actually is the default set by testenv.py. Right
now, Python tests ignore IMGOPTS, though, so this has no effect; but
Vladimir has a series that will change this, so we need to fix this test
before that series lands.
We can fix it by writing data to the source before we start the mirror
job; apparently that makes the (VMDK) format layer change its mind and
pass on the pre-READY flush to the protocol level, so the test passes
again. (I presume, without any data written, mirror just does a 64M
zero write on the target, which VMDK with zeroed_grain=on basically just
ignores.)
Without this, we do not get a flush, and so blkdebug only sees a single
flush at the end of the job instead of two, and therefore does not
inject an error, which makes the block job complete instead of raising
an error.

First, this permission never protected a node from being changed, as
generic child-replacing functions don't check it.
Second, it's a strange thing: it presents a permission of parent node
to change its child. But generally, children are replaced by different
mechanisms, like jobs or qmp commands, not by nodes.
Graph-mod permission is hard to understand. All other permissions
describe operations which done by parent node on its child: read,
write, resize. Graph modification operations are something completely
different.
The only place where BLK_PERM_GRAPH_MOD is used as "perm" (not shared
perm) is mirror_start_job, for s->target. Still modern code should use
bdrv_freeze_backing_chain() to protect from graph modification, if we
don't do it somewhere it may be considered as a bug. So, it's a bit
risky to drop GRAPH_MOD, and analyzing of possible loss of protection
is hard. But one day we should do it, let's do it now.
One more bit of information is that locking the corresponding byte in
file-posix doesn't make sense at all.

If i <= tail, we return 1 and do one unaligned WRITE, RMW happens.
If i > tail, we do on aligned WRITE_ZERO (or skip if target is zeroed)
and again one unaligned WRITE, RMW happens.
Let's do better: don't fragment the whole-zero buffer and report it as

It's unused now (except for permission handling)[*]. The only reasonable
user of it was block-stream job, recently updated to use own blk. And
other block jobs prefer to use own source node related objects.
So, the arguments of dropping the field are:
- block jobs prefer not to use it
- block jobs usually has more then one node to operate on, and better
to operate symmetrically (for example has both source and target
blk's in specific block-job state structure)
*: BlockJob.blk is used to keep some permissions. We simply move
permissions to block-job child created in block_job_create() together
with blk.
In mirror, we just should not care anymore about restoring state of
blk. Most probably this code could be dropped long ago, after dropping
bs->job pointer. Now it finally goes away together with BlockJob.blk
itself.
iotest 141 output is updated, as "bdrv_has_blk(bs)" check in
qmp_blockdev_del() doesn't fail (we don't have blk now). Still, new
error message looks even better.
In iotest 283 we need to add a job id, otherwise "Invalid job ID"
happens now earlier than permission check (as permissions moved from
blk to block-job node).

We could taylor the algorithm list to what gnutls supports, but this is

Wait for the destination VM to close itself instead of racing to shut it
down first, which produces different error log messages from AQMP
depending on precisely when we tried to shut it down.
(For example: We may try to issue 'quit' immediately prior to the target
VM closing its QMP socket, which will cause an ECONNRESET error to be
logged. Waiting for the VM to exit itself avoids the race on shutdown
behavior.)

AQMP likes to be very chatty about errors it encounters. In general,
this is good because it allows us to get good diagnostic information for
otherwise complex async failures.
For example, during a failed QMP connection attempt, we might see:
+ERROR:qemu.aqmp.qmp_client.qemub-2536319:Negotiation failed: EOFError
+ERROR:qemu.aqmp.qmp_client.qemub-2536319:Failed to establish session: EOFError
This might be nice in iotests output, because failure scenarios
involving the new QMP library will be spelled out plainly in the output
diffs.
For tests that are intentionally causing this scenario though, filtering
that log output could be a hassle. For now, add a context manager that
simply lets us toggle this output off during a critical region.
(Additionally, a forthcoming patch allows the use of either legacy or
async QMP to be toggled with an environment variable. In this
circumstance, we can't amend the iotest output to just always expect the
error message, either. Just suppress it for now. More rigorous log
filtering can be investigated later if/when it is deemed safe to
permanently replace the legacy QMP library.)

If we spy on the QMP commands instead, we don't need callers to remember
to pass it. Seems like a fair trade-off.
The one slightly weird bit is overloading this instance variable for
wait(), where we use it to mean "don't issue the qmp 'quit'
command". This means that wait() will "fail" if the QEMU process does
not terminate of its own accord.
In most cases, we probably did already actually issue quit -- some
iotests do this -- but in some others, we may be waiting for QEMU to
terminate for some other reason, such as a test wherein we tell the
guest (directly) to shut down.

This one is insidious: if you write an import as "from {namespace}
import {subpackage}" as mirror-top-perms (now) does, mypy will fail on
every-other invocation *if* the package being imported is a typed,
installed, namespace-scoped package.
Upsettingly, that's exactly what 'qemu.[aqmp|qmp|machine]' et al are in
the context of Python CI tests.
Now, I could just edit mirror-top-perms to avoid this invocation, but
since I tripped on a landmine, I might as well head it off at the pass
and make sure nobody else trips on that same landmine.
It seems to have something to do with the order in which files are
checked as well, meaning the random order in which set(os.listdir())
produces the list of files to test will cause problems intermittently
and not just strictly "every other run".
This will be fixed in mypy >= 0.920, which is not released yet. The
workaround for now is to disable incremental checking, which avoids the
issue.
Note: This workaround is not applied when running iotest 297 directly,
because the bug does not surface there! Given the nature of CI jobs not
starting with any stale cache to begin with, this really only has a
half-second impact on manual runs of the Python test suite when executed
directly by a developer on their local machine. The workaround may be
removed when the Python package requirements can stipulate mypy 0.920 or
higher, which can happen as soon as it is released. (Barring any
unforseen compatibility issues that 0.920 may bring with it.)

We need at least a tiny little shim here to join test file discovery
with test invocation. This logic could conceivably be hosted somewhere
in python/, but I felt it was strictly the least-rude thing to keep the
test logic here in iotests/, even if this small function isn't itself an
iotest.
Note that we don't actually even need the executable bit here, we'll be
relying on the ability to run this module as a script using Python CLI
arguments. No chance it gets misunderstood as an actual iotest that way.
(It's named, not in tests/, doesn't have the execute bit, and doesn't
have an execution shebang.)

Instead of using a process return code as the python function return

'pylint-3' is another Fedora-ism. Use "python3 -m pylint" or "python3 -m

prefer the "correct" tool when run in a virtual environment.
Note that we still check for "pylint-3" before the test begins -- this
check is now "overly strict", but shouldn't cause anything that was
already running correctly to start failing. This is addressed by a
commit later in this series;

Callers should be able to specify whether they want job_cancel_sync() to
force-cancel the job or not.
In fact, almost all invocations do not care about consistency of the
result and just want the job to terminate as soon as possible, so they
should pass force=true. The replication block driver is the exception,
specifically the active commit job it runs.
As for job_cancel_sync_all(), all callers want it to force-cancel all
jobs, because that is the point of it: To cancel all remaining jobs as
quickly as possible (generally on process termination). So make it
invoke job_cancel_sync() with force=true.
This changes some iotest outputs, because quitting qemu while a mirror
job is active will now lead to it being cancelled instead of completed,
which is what we want. (Cancelling a READY mirror job with force=false
may take an indefinite amount of time, which we do not want when
quitting. If users want consistent results, they must have all jobs be
done before they quit qemu.)

There is no conflict and no dependency if we have parallel writes to
different subclusters of one cluster when the cluster itself is already
allocated. So, relax extra dependency.
Measure performance:
First, prepare build/qemu-img-old and build/qemu-img-new images.
cd scripts/simplebench
./img_bench_templater.py
Paste the following to stdin of running script:
qemu_img=../../build/qemu-img-{old|new}
$qemu_img create -f qcow2 -o extended_l2=on /ssd/x.qcow2 1G
$qemu_img bench -c 100000 -d 8 [-s 2K|-s 2K -o 512|-s $((1024*2+512))] \
-w -t none -n /ssd/x.qcow2
The result:
All results are in seconds
------------------ --------- ---------
old new
-s 2K 6.7 ± 15% 6.2 ± 12%
-7%
-s 2K -o 512 13 ± 3% 11 ± 5%
-16%
-s $((1024*2+512)) 9.5 ± 4% 8.4
-12%
------------------ --------- ---------
So small writes are more independent now and that helps to keep deeper
io queue which improves performance.
271 iotest output becomes racy for three allocation in one cluster.
Second and third writes may finish in different order. Second and
third requests don't depend on each other any more. Still they both
depend on first request anyway. Filter out second and third write
offsets to cover both possible outputs.

We must not inactivate child when parent has write permissions on
it.
Calling .bdrv_inactivate() doesn't help: actually only qcow2 has this
handler and it is used to flush caches, not for permission
manipulations.
So, let's simply check cumulative parent permissions before
inactivating the node.
This commit fixes a crash when we do migration during backup: prior to
the commit nothing prevents all nodes inactivation at migration finish
and following backup write to the target crashes on assertion
"assert(!(bs->open_flags & BDRV_O_INACTIVE));" in
bdrv_co_write_req_prepare().
After the commit, we rely on the fact that copy-before-write filter
keeps write permission on target node to be able to write to it. So
inactivation fails and migration fails as expected.
Corresponding test now passes, so, enable it.

able to create it with blockdev-add first, specifying both filtered and

Currently, filter unshares write permission unconditionally on source

We are going to convert backup_top to full featured public filter,
which can be used in separate of backup job. Start from renaming from
"how it used" to "what it does".
While updating comments in 283 iotest, drop and rephrase also things
about ".active", as this field is now dropped, and filter doesn't have
"inactive" mode.
Note that this change may be considered as incompatible interface
change, as backup-top filter format name was visible through
query-block and query-named-block-nodes.
Still, consider the following reasoning:
1. backup-top was never documented, so if someone depends on format
name (for driver that can't be used other than it is automatically
inserted on backup job start), it's a kind of "undocumented feature
use". So I think we are free to change it.
2. There is a hope, that there is no such users: it's a lot more native
to give a good node-name to backup-top filter if need to operate
with it somehow, and don't touch format name.
3. Another "incompatible" change in further commit would be moving
copy-before-write filter from using backing child to file child. And
this is even more reasonable than renaming: for now all public
filters are file-child based.
So, it's a risky change, but risk seems small and good interface worth
it.

The point of 'qemu-img convert --bitmaps' is to be a convenience for
actions that are already possible through a string of smaller
'qemu-img bitmap' sub-commands. One situation not accounted for
already is that if a source image contains an inconsistent bitmap (for
example, because a qemu process died abruptly before flushing bitmap
state), the user MUST delete those inconsistent bitmaps before
anything else useful can be done with the image.
We don't want to delete inconsistent bitmaps by default: although a
corrupt bitmap is only a loss of optimization rather than a corruption
of user-visible data, it is still nice to require the user to opt in
to the fact that they are aware of the loss of the bitmap. Still,
requiring the user to check 'qemu-img info' to see whether bitmaps are
consistent, then use 'qemu-img bitmap --remove' to remove offenders,
all before using 'qemu-img convert', is a lot more work than just
adding a knob 'qemu-img convert --bitmaps --skip-broken-bitmaps' which
opts in to skipping the broken bitmaps.
After testing the new option, also demonstrate the way to manually fix
things (either deleting bad bitmaps, or re-creating them as empty) so
that it is possible to convert without the option.

that addition, and has the unfortunate behavior that all portions of
the backing chain that resolve without finding a hit in any backing
layer report the same depth as the final backing layer. This makes it
harder to reconstruct a qcow2 backing chain using just 'qemu-img map'
output, especially when using "backing":null to artificially limit a
backing chain, because it is impossible to distinguish between a
QCOW2_CLUSTER_UNALLOCATED (which defers to a [missing] backing file)
and a QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_PLAIN cluster (which would override any
backing file), since both types of clusters otherwise show as
"data":false,"zero":true" (but note that we can distinguish a
QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_ALLOCATED, which would also have an "offset":
listing).
The task of reconstructing a qcow2 chain was made harder in commit
0da9856851 (nbd: server: Report holes for raw images), because prior
to that point, it was possible to abuse NBD's block status command to
see which portions of a qcow2 file resulted in BDRV_BLOCK_ALLOCATED
(showing up as NBD_STATE_ZERO in isolation) vs. missing from the chain
(showing up as NBD_STATE_ZERO|NBD_STATE_HOLE); but now qemu reports
more accurate sparseness information over NBD.
An obvious solution is to make 'qemu-img map --output=json' add an
additional "present":false designation to any cluster lacking an
allocation anywhere in the chain, without any change to the "depth"
parameter to avoid breaking existing clients. The iotests have
several examples where this distinction demonstrates the additional
accuracy.

Without the allow_other mount option, no user (not even root) but the
one who started qemu/the storage daemon can access the export. Allow
users to configure the export such that such accesses are possible.
While allow_other is probably what users want, we cannot make it an
unconditional default, because passing it is only possible (for non-root
users) if the global fuse.conf configuration file allows it. Thus, the
default is an 'auto' mode, in which we first try with allow_other, and
then fall back to without.
FuseExport.allow_other reports whether allow_other was actually used as
a mount option or not. Currently, this information is not used, but a
future patch will let this field decide whether e.g. an export's UID and
GID can be changed through chmod.
One notable thing about 'auto' mode is that libfuse may print error
messages directly to stderr, and so may fusermount (which it executes).
Our export code cannot really filter or hide them. Therefore, if 'auto'
fails its first attempt and has to fall back, fusermount will print an
error message that mounting with allow_other failed.
This behavior necessitates a change to iotest 308, namely we need to
filter out this error message (because if the first attempt at mounting
with allow_other succeeds, there will be no such message).
Furthermore, common.rc's _make_test_img should use allow-other=off for
FUSE exports, because iotests generally do not need to access images
from other users, so allow-other=on or allow-other=auto have no
advantage. OTOH, allow-other=on will not work on systems where
user_allow_other is disabled, and with allow-other=auto, we get said
error message that we would need to filter out again. Just disabling
allow-other is simplest.

We do not do any permission checks in fuse_open(), so let the kernel do
them. We already let fuse_getattr() report the proper UNIX permissions,
so this should work the way we want.
This causes a change in 308's reference output, because now opening a
non-writable export with O_RDWR fails already, instead of only actually
attempting to write to it. (That is an improvement.)

properties should be decided with backend information.
If it is off, any backend information will be discarded, which is
suitable if you plan to perform live migration to a different disk backend.
If it is on, a block device may utilize backend information more
aggressively.
By default, it is auto, which uses backend information for block
sizes and ignores the others, which is consistent with the older

When the x-blockdev-reopen was added it allowed reconfiguring the
graph by replacing backing files, but changing the 'file' option was
forbidden. Because of this restriction some operations are not
possible, notably inserting and removing block filters.
This patch adds support for replacing the 'file' option. This is
similar to replacing the backing file and the user is likewise
responsible for the correctness of the resulting graph, otherwise this
can lead to data corruption.

When creating an image file with a backing file, we generally try to
open the backing file (unless -u was specified), mostly to verify that
it is there, but also to get the file size if none was specified for the
new image.
For neither of these things do we need data I/O, and so we can pass
BDRV_O_NO_IO when opening the backing file. This allows us to open even
encrypted backing images without requiring the user to provide a secret.
This makes the -u switch in iotests 189 and 198 unnecessary (and the
$size parameter), so drop it, because this way we get regression tests
for this patch here.

move python/qemu/*.py to python/qemu/[machine, qmp, utils]/*.py and
update import directives across the tree.
This is done to create a PEP420 namespace package, in which we may
create subpackages. To do this, the namespace directory ("qemu") should
not have any modules in it. Those files will go into new 'machine',
'qmp' and 'utils' subpackages instead.
Implement machine/__init__.py making the top-level classes and functions
from its various modules available directly inside the package. Change
qmp.py to qmp/__init__.py similarly, such that all of the useful QMP

Python test scripts that use unittest consist of multiple tests.
unittest.main allows selecting which tests to run, but currently this
is not possible because the iotests wrapper ignores sys.argv.
unittest.main command line options also allow the user to pick the
desired options for verbosity, failfast mode, etc. While "-d" is
currently translated to "-v", it also enables extra debug output,
and other options are not available at all.
These command line options only work if the unittest.main testRunner
argument is a type, rather than a TestRunner instance. Therefore, pass
the class name and "verbosity" argument to unittest.main, and adjust for
the different default warnings between TextTestRunner and unittest.main.

If mirror is READY than cancel operation is not discarding the whole
result of the operation, but instead it's a documented way get a
point-in-time snapshot of source disk.
So, we should not cancel any requests if mirror is READ and
force=false. Let's fix that case.
Note, that bug that we have before this commit is not critical, as the
only .bdrv_cancel_in_flight implementation is nbd_cancel_in_flight()

Sometimes the parser needs to further split a token it has collected
from the token input stream. Right now, it does a cursory check to see
if the relevant characters appear in the token to determine if it should
break it down further.
However, qemu_rbd_next_tok() will escape characters as it removes tokens
from the token stream and plain strchr() won't. This can make the
initial strchr() check slightly misleading since it implies
qemu_rbd_next_tok() will find the token and split on it, except the
reality is that qemu_rbd_next_tok() will pass over it if it is escaped.
Use a custom strchr to avoid mixing escaped and unescaped string
operations. Furthermore, this code is identical to how
qemu_rbd_next_tok() seeks its next token, so incorporate this custom
strchr into the body of that function to reduce duplication.

Split out no-perm part of bdrv_root_attach_child() into separate
transaction action. bdrv_root_attach_child() now moves to new
permission update paradigm: first update graph relations then update
permissions.
qsd-jobs test output updated. Seems now permission update goes in
another order. Still, the test comment say that we only want to check
that command doesn't crash, and it's still so.
Error message is a bit misleading as it looks like job was added first.

things. We should update the error message, but let's not do it now.

Rewrite bdrv_check_perm(), bdrv_abort_perm_update() and bdrv_set_perm()
to update nodes in topological sort order instead of simple DFS. With
topologically sorted nodes, we update a node only when all its parents
already updated. With DFS it's not so.
Consider the following example:
A -+
| |
| v
| B
| |
v |
C<-+
A is parent for B and C, B is parent for C.
Obviously, to update permissions, we should go in order A B C, so, when
we update C, all parent permissions already updated. But with current
approach (simple recursion) we can update in sequence A C B C (C is
updated twice). On first update of C, we consider old B permissions, so
doing wrong thing. If it succeed, all is OK, on second C update we will
finish with correct graph. But if the wrong thing failed, we break the
whole process for no reason (it's possible that updated B permission
will be less strict, but we will never check it).
Also new approach gives a way to simultaneously and correctly update
several nodes, we just need to run bdrv_topological_dfs() several times
to add all nodes and their subtrees into one topologically sorted list
(next patch will update bdrv_replace_node() in this manner).
Test test_parallel_perm_update() is now passing, so move it out of
debugging "if".
We also need to support ignore_children in
bdrv_parent_perms_conflict()
For test 283 order of conflicting parents check is changed.
Note also that in bdrv_check_perm() we don't check for parents conflict
at root bs, as we may be in the middle of permission update in
bdrv_reopen_multiple(). bdrv_reopen_multiple() will be updated soon.

Three test cases:
(1) Adding a qcow2 (metadata) file to an existing data file, see whether
we can read the existing data through the qcow2 image.
(2) Append data to the data file, grow the qcow2 image accordingly, see
whether we can read the new data through the qcow2 image.
(3) At runtime, add a backing image to a freshly created qcow2 image
with an external data file (with data-file-raw). Reading data from
the qcow2 image must return the same result as reading data from the
data file, so everything in the backing image must be ignored.
(This did not use to be the case, because without the L2 tables
preallocated, all clusters would appear as unallocated, and so the
qcow2 driver would fall through to the backing file.)

Setting the qcow2 data-file-raw bit means that you can ignore the
qcow2 metadata when reading from the external data file. It does not
mean that you have to ignore it, though. Therefore, the data read must
be the same regardless of whether you interpret the metadata or whether
you ignore it, and thus the L1/L2 tables must all be present and give a
1:1 mapping.
This patch changes 244's output: First, the qcow2 file is larger right
after creation, because of metadata preallocation. Second, the qemu-img
map output changes: Everything that was not explicitly discarded or
zeroed is now a data area.

We have multiple clients of qemu_strtosz (qemu-io, the opts visitor,
the keyval visitor), and it gets annoying that edge-case testing is
impacted by implicit rounding to 53 bits of precision due to parsing
with strtod(). As an example posted by Rich Jones:
$ nbdkit memory $(( 2**63 - 2**30 )) --run \
'build/qemu-io -f raw "$uri" -c "w -P 3 $(( 2**63 - 2**30 - 512 )) 512" '
write failed: Input/output error
because 9223372035781033472 got rounded to 0x7fffffffc0000000 which is
out of bounds.
It is also worth noting that our existing parser, by virtue of using
strtod(), accepts decimal AND hex numbers, even though test-cutils
previously lacked any coverage of the latter until the previous patch.
We do have existing clients that expect a hex parse to work (for
example, iotest 33 using qemu-io -c "write -P 0xa 0x200 0x400"), but
strtod() parses "08" as 8 rather than as an invalid octal number, so
we know there are no clients that depend on octal. Our use of
strtod() also means that "0x1.8k" would actually parse as 1536 (the
fraction is 8/16), rather than 1843 (if the fraction were 8/10); but
as this was not covered in the testsuite, I have no qualms forbidding
hex fractions as invalid, so this patch declares that the use of
fractions is only supported with decimal input, and enhances the
testsuite to document that.
Our previous use of strtod() meant that -1 parsed as a negative; now
that we parse with strtoull(), negative values can wrap around modulo
2^64, so we have to explicitly check whether the user passed in a '-';
and make it consistent to also reject '-0'. This has the minor effect
of treating negative values as EINVAL (with no change to endptr)
rather than ERANGE (with endptr advanced to what was parsed), visible
in the updated iotest output.
We also had no testsuite coverage of "1.1e0k", which happened to parse
under strtod() but is unlikely to occur in practice; as long as we are
making things more robust, it is easy enough to reject the use of
exponents in a strtod parse.
The fix is done by breaking the parse into an integer prefix (no loss
in precision), rejecting negative values (since we can no longer rely
on strtod() to do that), determining if a decimal or hexadecimal parse
was intended (with the new restriction that a fractional hex parse is
not allowed), and where appropriate, using a floating point fractional
parse (where we also scan to reject use of exponents in the fraction).
The bulk of the patch is then updates to the testsuite to match our
new precision, as well as adding new cases we reject (whether they
were rejected or inadvertently accepted before).

When querying image extents for raw image, qemu-nbd reports holes as
zero:
$ qemu-nbd -t -r -f raw empty-6g.raw
$ qemu-img map --output json nbd://localhost
[{ "start": 0, "length": 6442450944, "depth": 0, "zero": true, "data": true, "offset": 0}]
$ qemu-img map --output json empty-6g.raw
[{ "start": 0, "length": 6442450944, "depth": 0, "zero": true, "data": false, "offset": 0}]
Turns out that qemu-img map reports a hole based on BDRV_BLOCK_DATA, but
nbd server reports a hole based on BDRV_BLOCK_ALLOCATED.
The NBD protocol says:
NBD_STATE_HOLE (bit 0): if set, the block represents a hole (and
future writes to that area may cause fragmentation or encounter an
NBD_ENOSPC error); if clear, the block is allocated or the server
could not otherwise determine its status.
qemu-img manual says:
whether the sectors contain actual data or not (boolean field data;
if false, the sectors are either unallocated or stored as
optimized all-zero clusters);
To me, data=false looks compatible with NBD_STATE_HOLE. From user point
of view, getting same results from qemu-nbd and qemu-img is more
important than being more correct about allocation status.
Changing nbd server to report holes using BDRV_BLOCK_DATA makes qemu-nbd
results compatible with qemu-img map:
$ qemu-img map --output json nbd://localhost
[{ "start": 0, "length": 6442450944, "depth": 0, "zero": true, "data": false, "offset": 0}]

Some error messages contain ambiguous representations of the 'node-name'
parameter. This can be particularly confusing when exchanging QMP
messages (C = client, S = server):
C: {"execute": "block_resize", "arguments": { "device": "my_file", "size": 26843545600 }}
S: {"error": {"class": "GenericError", "desc": "Cannot find device=my_file nor node_name="}}
^^^^^^^^^
This error message suggests one could send a message with a key called
'node_name':
C: {"execute": "block_resize", "arguments": { "node_name": "my_file", "size": 26843545600 }}
^^^^^^^^^
but using the underscore is actually incorrect, the parameter should be
'node-name':
S: {"error": {"class": "GenericError", "desc": "Parameter 'node_name' is unexpected"}}
This behavior was uncovered in bz1651437, but I ended up going down a
rabbit hole looking for other areas where this miscommunication might
occur and changing those accordingly as well.

Without any of HEAD^ or HEAD^^ applied, qemu will most likely crash on
the qemu-io invocation, for a variety of immediate reasons. The
underlying problem is generally a use-after-free access into
backup-top's BlockCopyState.
With only HEAD^ applied, qemu-io will run into an EIO (which is not
capture by the output, but you can see that the qemu-io invocation will
be accepted (i.e., qemu-io will run) in contrast to the reference
output, where the node name cannot be found), and qemu will then crash
in query-named-block-nodes: bdrv_get_allocated_file_size() detects
backup-top to be a filter and passes the request through to its child.
However, after bdrv_backup_top_drop(), that child is NULL, so the
recursive call crashes.
With HEAD^^ applied, this test should pass.

To disallow certain refcount_bits values, some _unsupported_imgopts
invocations look like "refcount_bits=1[^0-9]", i.e. they match an
integer boundary with [^0-9]. This expression does not match the end of
the string, though, so it breaks down when refcount_bits is the last
option (which it tends to be after the rewrite of the check script in
Python).
Those invocations could use \b or \> instead, but those are not
portable. They could use something like \([^0-9]\|$\), but that would
be cumbersome. To make it simple and keep the existing invocations
working, just let _unsupported_imgopts match the regex against $IMGOPTS
plus a trailing space.

When using the _launch_qemu and _send_qemu_cmd functions from
common.qemu, any QMP events get mixed in with the output from
the commands and responses.
This makes it difficult to write a test case as the ordering
of events in the output is not stable.
This introduces a variable 'capture_events' which can be set
to a list of event names. Any events listed in this variable
will not be printed, instead collected in the $QEMU_EVENTS
environment variable.
A new '_wait_event' function can be invoked to collect events
at a fixed point in time. The function will first pull events
cached in $QEMU_EVENTS variable, and if none are found, will
then read more from QMP.

The bdrv_all_*_snapshot functions return a BlockDriverState pointer
for the invalid backend, which the callers then use to report an
error message. In some cases multiple callers are reporting the
same error message, but with slightly different text. In the future
there will be more error scenarios for some of these methods, which
will benefit from fine grained error message reporting. So it is
helpful to push error reporting down a level.

testrunner.py prints the normal output when starting a test even for
-makecheck. This output contains '\r' at the end so that it can be
overwritten with the result at the end of the test. However, for
-makecheck this is shorter output in a different format, so effectively
we end up with garbled output that mixes both output forms.

Just use classes introduced in previous three commits. Behavior
difference is described in these three commits.
Drop group file, as it becomes unused.
Drop common.env: now check is in python, and for tests we use same
python interpreter that runs the check itself. Use build environment
PYTHON in check-block instead, to keep "make check" use the same
python.
Checking for virtio-blk moved to iotests.py, as it actually iotests.py
dependency. Actually not all python iotests depend on it, so in future
it may be refactored to checked only when really needed.

Add TestRunner class, which will run tests in a new python iotests
running framework.
There are some differences with current ./check behavior, most
significant are:
- Consider all tests self-executable, just run them, don't run python
by hand.
- Elapsed time is cached in json file
- Elapsed time precision increased a bit
- Instead of using "diff -w" which ignores all whitespace differences,
manually strip whitespace at line end then use python difflib, which
no longer ignores spacing mid-line

Add TestEnv class, which will handle test environment in a new python
iotests running framework.
Don't add compat=1.1 for qcow2 IMGOPTS, as v3 is default anyway.

Add python script with new logic of searching for tests:
Current ./check behavior:
- tests are named [0-9][0-9][0-9]
- tests must be registered in group file (even if test doesn't belong
to any group, like 142)
Behavior of findtests.py:
- group file is dropped
- tests are all files in tests/ subdirectory (except for .out files),
so it's not needed more to "register the test", just create it with
appropriate name in tests/ subdirectory. Old names like
[0-9][0-9][0-9] (in root iotests directory) are supported too, but
not recommended for new tests
- groups are parsed from '# group: ' line inside test files
- optional file group.local may be used to define some additional
groups for downstreams
- 'disabled' group is used to temporary disable tests. So instead of
commenting tests in old 'group' file you now can add them to
disabled group with help of 'group.local' file
- selecting test ranges like 5-15 are not supported more
(to support restarting failed ./check command from the middle of the
process, new argument is added: --start-from)
Benefits:
- no rebase conflicts in group file on patch porting from branch to
branch
- no conflicts in upstream, when different series want to occupy same
test number
- meaningful names for test files
For example, with digital number, when some person wants to add some
test about block-stream, he most probably will just create a new
test. But if there would be test-block-stream test already, he will
at first look at it and may be just add a test-case into it.
And anyway meaningful names are better.
This commit doesn't update check behavior (which will be done in
further commit), still, the documentation changed like new behavior is
already here. Let's live with this small inconsistency for the
following few commits, until final change.
