Currently usb-serial devices are unable to send data into guests with
the xhci controller. Data is copied into the usb-serial's buffer, but
it is not sent into the guest. Data coming out of the guest works
properly. usb-serial devices work properly with ehci.
Have usb-serial call usb_wakeup() when receiving data from the chardev.
This seems to notify the xhci controller and fix inbound data flow.
Also add USB_CFG_ATT_WAKEUP to the device's bmAttributes. This matches
a real FTDI serial adapter's bmAttributes.

For usb2 bMaxPacketSize0 is "n", for usb3 it is "1 << n",
so it must be 9 not 64 ...
rom "Universal Serial Bus 3.1 Specification":
If the device is operating at Gen X speed, the bMaxPacketSize0
field shall be set to 09H indicating a 512-byte maximum packet.
An Enhanced SuperSpeed device shall not support any other maximum
packet sizes for the default control pipe (endpoint 0) control

We now announce a 512-byte maximum packet.

I've got a case where usbredir_write manages to call back into itself
via spice; this patch causes the recursion to fail (0 bytes) the write;
this seems to avoid the deadlock I was previously seeing.
I can't say I fully understand the interaction of usbredir and spice;
but there are a few similar guards in spice and usbredir
to catch other cases especially onces also related to spice_server_char_device_wakeup
This case seems to be triggered by repeated migration+repeated

finished before this hits.

By using the enum in the IOEventHandler typedef we:
- make the IOEventHandler type more explicit (this handler
process out-of-band information, while the IOReadHandler
is in-band),
- help static code analyzers.

With stereo playback, they need about 375 minutes of continuous audio
playback to overflow, which is usually not a problem (as stopping and
later resuming playback resets the counters). But with 7.1 audio, they
only need about 95 minutes to overflow.
After the overflow, the buf->prod % USBAUDIO_PACKET_SIZE(channels)
assertion no longer holds true, which will result in overflowing the
buffer. With 64 bit variables, it would take about 762000 years to
overflow.

of the Command Ring mechanisms.
No Op Command is defined in XHCI spec (4.6.2) and just reports Command
Completion Event with Completion Code == Success.
Before this commit, No Op Command is not implemented so xHC reports
Command Completion Event with Completion Code == TRB Error. This commit
fixes this behaviour to report Completion Code correctly.

Finally add audiodev= options to audio frontends so users can specify
which backend to use when multiple backends exist. Not specifying an

sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related
to the system-emulator. Evidence:
* It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing
sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600
objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on
qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits).
* It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers.
Split stuff related to run state management into its own header
sysemu/runstate.h.
Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects. qemu/uuid.h
also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400
to 4200. Touching new sysemu/runstate.h recompiles some 500 objects.
Since I'm touching MAINTAINERS to add sysemu/runstate.h anyway, also

A Xen public header have been imported into QEMU (by

that depends on ring.h which come from the system when building QEMU.
This patch resolves the issue of having headers from the system
importing a different copie of ring.h.
This patch is prompt by the build issue described in the previous
patch: 'Revert xen/io/ring.h of "Clean up a few header guard symbols"'
ring.h and the new imported headers are moved to
"include/hw/xen/interface" as those describe interfaces with a guest.
The imported headers are cleaned up a bit while importing them: some
part of the file that QEMU doesn't use are removed (description
of how to make hypercall in grant_table.h have been removed).
Other cleanup:
- xen-mapcache.c and xen-legacy-backend.c don't need grant_table.h.
- xenfb.c doesn't need event_channel.h.

OHCI controller, but no PCI. With the new Kconfig-style build system,
it will soon be possible to create QEMU binaries that only contain
such PCI-less machines. However, the two OHCI controllers, for sysbus

is still required for linking here. Move the OHCI-PCI device code

The ObjectInfo struct has a variable length array containing the UTF-16
encoded filename. The number of characters of trailing data is given by
the 'length' field in the struct and this must be validated against the
size of the data packet received from the guest.
Since the data is UTF-16, we must convert the byte count we have to a
character count before validating. This must take care to truncate if
a malicious guest sent an odd number of bytes.

the QFileMonitor object. In very long life QEMU processes with
a huge amount of USB MTP activity creating & deleting directories
it is just about conceivable that the int counter can wrap
around. This would result in incorrect behaviour of the file
monitor watch APIs due to clashing watch IDs.
Instead of trying to detect this situation, this patch changes
the way watch IDs are allocated. It is turned into an int64_t
variable where the high 32 bits are set from the underlying
inotify "int" ID. This gives an ID that is guaranteed unique
for the directory as a whole, and we can rely on the kernel
to enforce this. QFileMonitor then sets the low 32 bits from
a per-directory counter.
The USB MTP device only sets watches on the directory as a
whole, not files within, so there is no risk of guest
triggered wrap around on the low 32 bits.

In usb_mask_to_str() we convert a mask of USB speeds into
a human-readable string (like "full+high") for use in
tracing and error messages. However the conversion code
doesn't do anything to the string buffer if the passed in
speedmask doesn't match any of the recognized speeds,
which means that the tracing and error messages will
end up with random garbage in them. This can happen if
we're doing USB device passthrough.
Handle the "unrecognized speed" case by using the
string "unknown".

With certain USB devices passed through via usb-host, a guest attempting to
reset a usb-host device can trigger a reset loop that renders the USB device
unusable. In my use case, the device was an iPhone XR that was passed through to
a Mac OS X Mojave guest. Upon connecting the device, the following happens:
1) Guest recognizes new device, sends reset to emulated USB host
2) QEMU's USB host sends reset to host kernel
3) Host kernel resets device
4) After reset, host kernel determines that some part of the device descriptor
has changed ("device firmware changed" in dmesg), so host kernel decides to
re-enumerate the device.
5) Re-enumeration causes QEMU to disconnect and reconnect the device in the
guest.
6) goto 1)

The same problem has been previously reported for an iPad:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/52617634/how-do-i-get-qemu-usb-passthrough-to-work-for-ipad-iphone
This problem can be elegantly solved by interrupting step 2) above. Instead of
passing through the reset, QEMU simply ignores it. To allow this to be
configured on a per-device level, a new parameter "no_guest_reset" is
introduced for the usb-host device. I can confirm that the configuration
described above (iPhone XS + Mojave guest) works flawlessly with
no_guest_reset=True specified.
Working command line for my scenario:
device_add usb-host,vendorid=0x05ac,productid=0x12a8,no_guest_reset=True,id=iphone

Certain devices types, like memory/CPU, are now being handled using a
hotplug interface provided by a top-level MachineClass. Hotpluggable
host bridges are another such device where it makes sense to use a
machine-level hotplug handler. However, unlike those devices,
host-bridges have a parent bus (the main system bus), and devices with
a parent bus use a different mechanism for registering their hotplug
handlers: qbus_set_hotplug_handler(). This interface currently expects
a handler to be a subclass of DeviceClass, but this is not the case
for MachineClass, which derives directly from ObjectClass.
Internally, the interface only requires an ObjectClass, so expose that
in qbus_set_hotplug_handler().

Windows guests have trouble dealing with usb devices having identical
serial numbers. So, assign unique serial numbers to usb hid devices.
All other usb devices have this already.
In the past the fixed serial number has been used to indicate working
remote setup to linux guests. Here is a bit of history:
* First there was nothing.
* Then I added a rule to udev checking for serial == 42.
(this is in rhel-6).
* Then systemd + udev merged.
* Then I changed the rule to check for serial != 1 instead, so we can
use any serial but "1" which is the one the old broken devices had
(this is in rhel-7). March 2014 in upstream systemd.
* Then all usb power management rules where dropped from systemd (June
2015). Which I figured today (Sept 2018), after wondering that the
rules are gone in fedora 28.
So, three years ago the serial number check was dropped upstream, yet I
hav't seen a single report about autosuspend issues (or cpu usage for
usb emulation going up, which is the typical symtom).
So I figured I can stop worring that changing the serial number will
break things and just do it.
And even if it turns out autosuspend is still an issue: I think
meanwhile we can really stop worrying about guests running in old qemu
versions with broken usb suspend (fixed in 0.13 !). If needed we can
enable autosuspend unconditionally in guests.

Rather than attempting to convert the existing backend infrastructure to
be QOM compliant (which would be hard to do in an incremental fashion),
subsequent patches will introduce a completely new framework for Xen PV
backends. Hence it is necessary to re-name parts of existing code to avoid
name clashes. The re-named 'legacy' infrastructure will be removed once all
backends have been ported to the new framework.
This patch is purely cosmetic. No functional change.

Most files that have TABs only contain a handful of them. Change
them to spaces so that we don't confuse people.
disas, standard-headers, linux-headers and libdecnumber are imported
from other projects and probably should be exempted from the check.
Outside those, after this patch the following files still contain both
8-space and TAB sequences at the beginning of the line. Many of them
have a majority of TABs, or were initially committed with all tabs.

Most list head structs need not be given a name. In most cases the
name is given just in case one is going to use QTAILQ_LAST, QTAILQ_PREV
or reverse iteration, but this does not apply to lists of other kinds,
and even for QTAILQ in practice this is only rarely needed. In addition,
we will soon reimplement those macros completely so that they do not
need a name for the head struct. So clean up everything, not giving a
name except in the rare case where it is necessary.

This patch introduces a new system bus generic EHCI controller.
For the system bus EHCI controller, we've already had "xlnx",
"exynos4210", "tegra2", "ppc4xx" and "fusbh200", they are specific and
only suitable for their own platforms, platforms such as an Arm server,
may need a generic system bus EHCI controller, this patch creates it,
and the kernel driver ehci_platform.c works well on it.

In usb_device_post_load, certain values of dev->setup_len or
dev->setup_index can cause -EINVAL to be returned. One example is when
setup_len exceeds 4096, the hard-coded value of sizeof(dev->data_buf).
This can happen through legitimate guest activity and will cause all
subsequent attempts to migrate the guest to fail in vmstate_load_state.
The values of these variables can be set by USB packets originating in
the guest. There are two ways in which they can be set: in
do_token_setup and in do_parameter in hw/usb/core.c.
It is easy to craft a USB packet in a guest that causes do_token_setup
to set setup_len to a value larger than 4096. When this has been done
once, all subsequent attempts to migrate the VM will fail in
usb_device_post_load until the VM is next power-cycled or a
smaller-sized USB packet is sent to the device.
Sample code for achieving this in a VM started with "-device usb-tablet"
running Linux with CONFIG_HIDRAW=y and HID_MAX_BUFFER_SIZE > 4096:
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/stat.h>
#include <fcntl.h>
#include <unistd.h>
int main() {
char buf[4097];
int fd = open("/dev/hidraw0", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK);
buf[0] = 0x1;
write(fd, buf, 4097);
return 0;
}
When this code is run in the VM, qemu will output:
usb_generic_handle_packet: ctrl buffer too small (4097 > 4096)
A subsequent attempt to migrate the VM will fail and output the
following on the destination host:
qemu-kvm: error while loading state for instance 0x0 of device '0000:00:06.7/1/usb-ptr'
qemu-kvm: load of migration failed: Invalid argument
The idea behind checking the values of setup_len and setup_index before
they are used is correct, but doing it in usb_device_post_load feels
arbitrary, and will cause unnecessary migration failures. Indeed, none
of the commit messages for c60174e8, 9f8e9895 and 719ffe1f justify why
post_load is the right place to do these checks. They correctly point
out that the important thing to protect is the usb_packet_copy.
Instead, the right place to do the checks is in do_token_setup and
do_parameter. Indeed, there are already some checks here. We can examine
each of the disjuncts currently tested in usb_device_post_load to see
whether any need adding to do_token_setup or do_parameter to improve
safety there:
* dev->setup_index < 0
- This test is not needed because setup_index is explicitly set to
0 in do_token_setup and do_parameter.
* dev->setup_len < 0
- In both do_token_setup and do_parameter, the value of setup_len
is computed by (s->setup_buf[7] << 8) | s->setup_buf[6]. Since
s->setup_buf is a byte array and setup_len is an int32_t, it's
impossible for this arithmetic to set setup_len's top bit, so it can
never be negative.
* dev->setup_index > dev->setup_len
- Since setup_index is 0, this is equivalent to the previous test,
so is redundant.
* dev->setup_len > sizeof(dev->data_buf)
- This condition is already explicitly checked in both
do_token_setup and do_parameter.
Hence there is no need to bolster the existing checks in do_token_setup
or do_parameter, and we can safely remove these checks from
usb_device_post_load without reducing safety but allowing migrations to
proceed regardless of what USB packets have been generated by the guest.

The filename length in MTP metadata is specified by the guest. By
trusting it directly it'd theoretically be possible to get the host to
write memory parts outside the filename buffer into a filename. In
practice though there are usually NUL bytes stopping the string

Open files and directories with O_NOFOLLOW to avoid symlinks attacks.
While being at it also add O_CLOEXEC.
usb-mtp only handles regular files and directories and ignores
everything else, so users should not see a difference.
Because qemu ignores symlinks, carrying out a successful symlink attack
requires swapping an existing file or directory below rootdir for a
symlink and winning the race against the inotify notification to qemu.

The token field contains the (guest-filled) state of the qtd, which
indicates whenever the other fields are valid or not. So make sure
we read the token first, otherwise we may end up with an stale next
pointer:
(1) ehci reads next
(2) guest writes next
(3) guest writes token
(4) ehci reads token
(5) ehci operates with stale next.
Typical effect is that qemu doesn't notice that the guest appends new
qtds to the end of the queue. Looks like the usb device stopped
responding. Linux can recover from that, but leaves a message in the
kernel log that it did reset the usb device in question.

* Pass an existing error to the caller with the message modified:
* error_propagate(errp, err);
* error_prepend(errp, "Could not frobnicate '%s': ", name);
Fei Li pointed out that doing error_propagate() first doesn't work
well when @errp is &error_fatal or &error_abort: the error_prepend()
is never reached.
Since I doubt fixing the documentation will stop people from getting
it wrong, introduce error_propagate_prepend(), in the hope that it
lures people away from using its constituents in the wrong order.
Update the instructions in error.h accordingly.
Convert existing error_prepend() next to error_propagate to
error_propagate_prepend(). If any of these get reached with
&error_fatal or &error_abort, the error messages improve. I didn't
check whether that's the case anywhere.

This is mandated by the ohci specification. It tells at 6.4.4 on page 104
that for transfer descriptors that are retired with an error the done
queue interrupt counter is cleared as if the interrupt delay field of the
descriptions were zero.
Before this change, error conditions were handled similarly to the
successful condition which is especially troublesome for control transfers.
Some drivers (e.g., the AmigaOS-one) as well as the example code in the
spec, set the setup stage with an interrupt delay of seven (which means no
interrupt). This is fine under normal conditions, because one usually
doesn't want to be notified about the completion of this stage. However, if
an error occurs in this stage, these drivers will not get notified with the
current implementation. The fix addresses this by following the spec more
closely. Also, otherwise, the ability to set interrupt delay to seven would
be useless.
Note that Linux drivers that I looked at don't seem to be affected as they
set six as the interrupt delay presumably for the reason that they won't
get notified otherwise.

Fetching qtd with the NULL address most likely makes no sense so from now
on, we handle it this case similarly as if the terminate (T) bit is not
set, which is already an exception as according to section 3.6 of the EHCI
spec there is no T bit defined for the current_qtd field.
The spec is a bit vague on how an EHCI driver should initialize these
fields: "The general operational model is that the host controller can
detect whether the overlay area contains a description of an active
transfer" (p. 49). QEMU primarily uses the QTD_TOKEN_ACTIVE bit of the
queue header to infer the activity state but there are other ways
conceivable.
This change allows QEMU to boot further into AmigaOS. The public available
version of the EHCI driver recycles queue heads in some rare conditions but
only clears the current_qtd field but not the status field. This works with
many available EHCI PCI cards but e.g., not with the Freescale USB
controller's found on the P5040. On the emulated EHCI controller of QEMU
the consequence is that some garbage was read in, which resulted in a
reset of the controller. This change fixes the problem.

The current code was not correctly handling 64 B (Max USB 1.1 payload size)
packets and therefore preventing some of the messages from smart card to
pass through to the guest.
If the smart card in host responded with 34 B of data in APDU layer, the
CCID headers added up to 64 B. The packet was send, but not correctly
committed per USB specification (8.5.3.2 Variable-length Data Stage):
> When all of the data structure is returned to the host, the function
> should indicate that the Data stage is ended by returning a packet
> that is shorter than the MaxPacketSize for the pipe. If the data
> structure is an exact multiple of wMaxPacketSize for the pipe, the
> function will return a zero-length packet to indicate the end of the
> Data stage.
This lead the guest applications to timeout while waiting for the rest
of data (the emulation layer is answering with NAK until the timeout).
This patch is checking the current maximum packet size and if the
payload of this size is detected, the message buffer is not yet released.
With the next call, the empty buffer is sent and the message buffer
is finally released.

usb-host emulates a device unplug after live migration, because the
device state is unknown and unplug/replug makes sure the guest
re-initializes the device into a working state. This can't be done in
post-load though, so post-load just schedules a bottom half which
executes after vmload is complete.
It can happen that the device autoscan timer hits the race window
between scheduling and running the bottom half, which in turn can
triggers an assert().
Fix that issue by just ignoring the usb_host_open() call in case the
bottom half didn't execute yet.

Now that we can safely call QOBJECT() on QObject * as well as its
subtypes, we can have macros qobject_ref() / qobject_unref() that work
everywhere instead of having to use QINCREF() / QDECREF() for QObject
and qobject_incref() / qobject_decref() for its subtypes.
The replacement is mechanical, except I broke a long line, and added a
cast in monitor_qmp_cleanup_req_queue_locked(). Unlike
qobject_decref(), qobject_unref() doesn't accept void *.
Note that the new macros evaluate their argument exactly once, thus no

according to Eduardo Habkost's commit fd3b02c889 all PCIEs now implement
INTERFACE_PCIE_DEVICE so we don't need is_express field anymore.
Devices that implements only INTERFACE_PCIE_DEVICE (is_express == 1)
or
devices that implements only INTERFACE_CONVENTIONAL_PCI_DEVICE (is_express == 0)
where not affected by the change.
The only devices that were affected are those that are hybrid and also
had (is_express == 1) - therefor only:
- hw/vfio/pci.c
- hw/usb/hcd-xhci.c
- hw/xen/xen_pt.c

The option have been marked as deprecated since QEMU 2.10, and so far
nobody complained that the host, serial, disk and net options are urgently
required anymore. So let's now get rid at least of this legacy pile, to
simplify the usb code quite a bit.
This patch removes the usbdevices host, serial, disk and net. These devices
use their own complicated parameter parsing mechanisms, so they are just
ugly to maintain, without real benefit for the users (the users can use the
corresponding "-device" parameters instead which have the same complexity
as the "-usbdevice" devices here).
Note that the other rather simple -usbdevice options (mouse, tablet, etc.)
are not removed yet (the code is really simple here, so it does not hurt
much to keep it), as well as the two devices "braille" and "bt" which are
easier to use with -usbdevice than with -device.

The bus pointer in PCIDevice is basically redundant with QOM information.
It's always initialized to the qdev_get_parent_bus(), the only difference
is the type.
Therefore this patch eliminates the field, instead creating a pci_get_bus()
helper to do the type mangling to derive it conveniently from the QOM
Device object underneath.

Add INTERFACE_CONVENTIONAL_PCI_DEVICE to all direct subtypes of
TYPE_PCI_DEVICE, except:
1) The ones that already have INTERFACE_PCIE_DEVICE set:
* base-xhci
* e1000e
* nvme
* pvscsi
* vfio-pci
* virtio-pci
* vmxnet3
2) base-pci-bridge
Not all PCI bridges are Conventional PCI devices, so
INTERFACE_CONVENTIONAL_PCI_DEVICE is added only to the subtypes
that are actually Conventional PCI:
* dec-21154-p2p-bridge
* i82801b11-bridge
* pbm-bridge
* pci-bridge
The direct subtypes of base-pci-bridge not touched by this patch
are:
* xilinx-pcie-root: Already marked as PCIe-only.
* pcie-pci-bridge: Already marked as PCIe-only.
* pcie-port: all non-abstract subtypes of pcie-port are already
marked as PCIe-only devices.
3) megasas-base
Not all megasas devices are Conventional PCI devices, so the
interface names are added to the subclasses registered by
megasas_register_types(), according to information in the
megasas_devices[] array.
"megasas-gen2" already implements INTERFACE_PCIE_DEVICE, so add
INTERFACE_CONVENTIONAL_PCI_DEVICE only to "megasas".

Nowdays we use libusb for usb-host, so we don't have different code
for linux vs. bsd any more. So there is little reason to have the
HOST_USB variable, we can just write things directly into the Makefile

The existing XHCI code reads the Event Ring Segment Table Base Address
Register (ERSTBA) every time when it is changed. However zero is its
default state so one would think that zero there means it is not in use.
This adds a check for ERSTBA in addition to the existing check for
the Event Ring Segment Table Size Register (ERSTSZ).

Code that checks dstate is unaware of SystemTap and LTTng UST dstate, so
the following trace event will not fire when solely enabled by SystemTap
or LTTng UST:
if (trace_event_get_state(TRACE_MY_EVENT)) {
str = g_strdup_printf("Expensive string to generate ...",
...);
trace_my_event(str);
g_free(str);
}
Add trace_event_get_state_backends() to fetch backend dstate. Those
backends that use QEMU dstate fetch it as part of
generate_h_backend_dstate().
Update existing trace_event_get_state() callers to use
trace_event_get_state_backends() instead.

But we know that there are at most 5 levels of USB hubs, with at
most two digits per level; that plus the separating dots means we
use at most 15 bytes (including trailing NUL) of our 16-byte field.
Adding an assertion to show gcc that we checked for truncation is
enough to shut up the false-positive warning.

Let's introduce infrastructure for specifying a error hint to be used if

Some USB devices have sparse interface numbering which is not able to be
passthroughed.
For example, the Sierra Wireless MC7455/MC7430:
# lsusb -D /dev/bus/usb/003/003 | egrep '1199|9071|bNumInterfaces|bInterfaceNumber'
Device: ID 1199:9071 Sierra Wireless, Inc.
idVendor 0x1199 Sierra Wireless, Inc.
idProduct 0x9071
bNumInterfaces 5
bInterfaceNumber 0
bInterfaceNumber 2
bInterfaceNumber 3
bInterfaceNumber 8
bInterfaceNumber 10
In this case, the interface numbers are 0, 2, 3, 8, 10 and not the
0, 1, 2, 3, 4 that QEMU tries to claim.
This change allows sparse USB interface numbering.
Instead of only claiming the interfaces in the range reported by the USB
device through bNumInterfaces, QEMU attempts to claim all possible
interfaces.

The spec says:
Suspend: (PORT_SUSPEND) This field indicates whether or not the device
on this port is suspended. Setting this field causes the device to
suspend by not propagating bus traffic downstream. This field may be
reset by a request or by resume signaling from the device attached to
the port.
I can't find any specific statement like "the PORT_SUSPEND field is reset
automatically on remote wakeup", but without this patch, the only way to
reset it is via the ClearPortFeature request so the ".. or by resume
signaling from the device" clause is clearly not implemented on the remote
wakeup path.
The default xhci Windows driver does not issue the ClearPortFeature request
and suspended devices attached to a hub don't properly get out of the
suspended state. Interestingly, the default uhci Windows driver *does*
issue the ClearPortFeature request and does not exhibit this problem.

When done processing a endpoint ring we must update the dequeue pointer
in the endpoint context in guest memory. This is needed to make sure
the guest has a correct view of things and also to make live migration
work properly, because xhci post_load restores alot of the state from
xhci data structures in guest memory.
Add xhci_set_ep_state() call to do that.
The recursive calls stopped by commit
ddb603ab6c had the (unintentional) side
effect to hiding this bug. xhci_set_ep_state() was called before
processing, to set the state to running, which updated the dequeue
pointer too.

'dc->vmsd->unmigratable' which caused QEMU to crash when trying to add
devices which do no set their 'dc->vmsd' yet while initialization.
Place a 'dc->vmsd' check prior to it so that we do not segfault for
such devices.
NOTE: This doesn't compromise the functioning of --only-migratable
option as all the unmigratable devices do set their 'dc->vmsd'.
Introduce a new function check_migratable() and move the
only_migratable check inside it, also use stubs to avoid user-mode qemu

The nec/renesas driver problems have finally been debugged and root
caused, see commit "7da76e1 xhci: fix event queue IRQ handling".
It's pretty clear now that
(a) The whole "driver can't handle ring full" story is most likely
wrong.
(b) The ER_FULL_HACK workaround based on the false assumtion doesn't
much. It avoids the driver crashing (without commit 7da76e1), but
it doesn't make usb work.
(c) With 7da76e1 applied it doesn't trigger any more.
So, lets kill it. Or, to be exact, lets almost kill it. Some data

The qemu xhci emulation doesn't handle the ERDP_EHB flag correctly.
When the host adapter queues a new event the ERDP_EHB flag is set. The
flag is cleared (via w1c) by the guest when it updates the ERDP (event
ring dequeue pointer) register to notify the host adapter which events
it has fetched.
An IRQ must be raised in case the ERDP_EHB flag flips from clear to set.
If the flag is set already (which implies there are events queued up
which are not yet processed by the guest) xhci must *not* raise a IRQ.
Qemu got that wrong and raised an IRQ on every event, thereby generating
spurious interrupts in case we've queued events faster than the guest
processed them. This patch fixes that.
With that change in place we also have to check ERDP updates, to see
whenever the guest has fetched all queued events. In case there are
still pending events set ERDP_EHB and raise an IRQ again, to make sure
the events don't linger unseen forever.
The linux kernel driver and the microsoft windows driver (shipped with
win8+) can deal with the spurious interrupts without problems. The
renesas windows driver (v2.1.39) which can be used on older windows
versions is quite upset though. It does spurious ERDP updates now and
then (not every time, seems we must hit a race window for this to
happen), which in turn makes the qemu xhci emulation think the event
ring is full. Things go south from here ...
tl;dr: This is the "fix xhci on win7" patch.

1. Set bInterfaceProtocol to 0x00 for usb-tablet. This should be
non-zero for boot protocol devices only, which the usb-tablet is not.
2. Set the usb-tablet's usage to "mouse" in the report descriptor.
The boot protocol of 0x02 specifically confused OS X/macOS' HID driver
stack, causing it to generate additional bogus HID events with relative
motion in addition to the tablet's absolute coordinate events.
Absolute pointing devices with HID Report Descriptor usage of 0x01
(pointing) are treated by the macOS HID driver as analog sticks, and
absolute coordinates are not directly translated to absolute mouse
cursor positions. Changing it to 0x02 (mouse) fixes the problem, and
does not have any adverse effect in other operating systems and
windowing systems. (VMWare does the same thing.)

* New "40p" machine type which is essentially a modernized and

* Add pseries-2.9 machine type
* Implement H_SIGNAL_SYS_RESET hypercall
* Consolidate the two alternate CPU init paths in pseries by
making it always go through CPU core objects to initialize CPU
* A number of bugfixes and cleanups
* Stop the guest timebase when the guest is stopped under KVM.
This makes the guest system clock also stop when paused, which
matches the x86 behaviour.
* Some preliminary cleanups leading towards implementation of the
POWER9 MMU.
There are also some changes not strictly related to ppc code, but for
its benefit:
* Limit the pxi-expander-bridge (PXB) device to x86 guests only

msix_init() reports errors with error_report(), which is wrong when
it's used in realize(). The same issue was fixed for msi_init() in
commit 1108b2f. In order to make the API change as small as possible,
leave the return value check to later patch.
For some devices(like e1000e, vmxnet3, nvme) who won't fail because of
msix_init's failure, suppress the error report by passing NULL error
object.
Bonus: add comment for msix_init.

When passing through an USB storage device to a pseries guest, it
is currently not possible to automatically boot from the device
if the "bootindex" property has been specified, too (e.g. when using
"-device nec-usb-xhci -device usb-host,hostbus=1,hostaddr=2,bootindex=0"
at the command line). The problem is that QEMU builds a device tree path
like "/pci@800000020000000/usb@0/usb-host@1" and passes it to SLOF
in the /chosen/qemu,boot-list property. SLOF, however, probes the
USB device, recognizes that it is a storage device and thus changes
its name to "storage", and additionally adds a child node for the
SCSI LUN, so the correct boot path in SLOF is something like
"/pci@800000020000000/usb@0/storage@1/disk@101000000000000" instead.
So when we detect an USB mass storage device with SCSI interface,
we've got to adjust the firmware boot-device path properly that
SLOF can automatically boot from the device.

just in the size of one buffer; combine the two using a _TEST

I think this is safe as long as everywhere which currently

The default DMA offset is set to 3. When the property is not set by
the consumer, the default causes DMA access to be shifted by 3
bytes. In PXA, this results in incorrect DMA access, leading to error
notification in the USB controller driver. A better default would be
0, so that there is no offset, when the consumer does not specify one.

snprintf return value is *not* the number of chars written into the
buffer, but the number of chars needed. So in case the buffer is too
small you can go alloc a bigger one and try again. But that also means
you can't simply use the return value for the next snprintf call
without checking beforehand that things did actually fit.
Problem is that usb_desc_create_serial didn't perform that check, so a
loooong path string (can happen with deep pci-bridge nesting) results in
the third snprintf call smashing the stack.
Fix this by throwing out all the snpintf calls and use g_strdup_printf
instead.

xhci has a fixed number of 24 (TD_QUEUE) XHCITransfer structs per
endpoint, which turns out to be a problem for usb3 devices with 32 (or
more) bulk streams. xhci re-checks the trb rings on every finished
transfer to make sure it'll pick up any pending work. But that scheme
breaks in case the first transfer of a ring can't be started because we
ran out of XHCITransfer structs already.
So remove static XHCITransfer array from XHCIEPContext. Use a linked
list instead, and allocate/free XHCITransfer as needed. Add helper
functions to allocate & initialize and to cleanup & release
XHCITransfer structs. That also simplifies trb management, we never
have to realloc XHCITransfer->trbs because we don't reuse XHCITransfer
structs any more.
New dynamic limit for in-flight xhci transfers per endpoint is
number-of-streams + 16.

The qemu_chr_fe_write method will return -1 on EAGAIN if the
chardev backend write would block. Almost no callers of the
qemu_chr_fe_write() method check the return value, instead
blindly assuming data was successfully sent. In most cases
this will lead to silent data loss on interactive consoles,
but in some cases (eg RNG EGD) it'll just cause corruption
of the protocol being spoken.
We unfortunately can't fix the virtio-console code, due to
a bug in the Linux guest drivers, which would cause the
entire Linux kernel to hang if we delay processing of the
incoming data in any way. Fixing this requires first fixing
the guest driver to not hold spinlocks while writing to the
hvc device backend.
