object_resolve_path*() ambiguous path detection breaks when
ambiguous==NULL and the object tree have 3 objects of the same type and
only 2 of them are under the same parent. e.g.:
/container/obj1 (TYPE_FOO)
/container/obj2 (TYPE_FOO)
/obj2 (TYPE_FOO)
With the above tree, object_resolve_path_type("", TYPE_FOO, NULL) will
incorrectly return /obj2, because the search inside "/container" will
return NULL, and the match at "/obj2" won't be detected as ambiguous.
Fix that by always calling object_resolve_partial_path() with a non-NULL
ambiguous parameter.

There's little point in dynamically allocating the bitmap if we
know at compile-time the max number of events we want to support.
Thus, make room in the struct for the bitmap, which will make things
easier later: this paves the way for upcoming changes, in which
we'll use a u32 to fully capture cpu->trace_dstate.
This change also increases performance by saving a dereference and
improving locality--note that this is important since upcoming work
makes reading this bitmap fairly common.

Commit 1f5c00cfdb ("qom/cpu: move tlb_flush to cpu_common_reset")
moved the call to tlb_flush() from the target-specific reset handlers
into the common code qom/cpu.c file, and protected the call with
"#ifdef CONFIG_SOFTMMU" to avoid that it is called for linux-user
only targets. But since qom/cpu.c is common code, CONFIG_SOFTMMU is
*never* defined here, so the tlb_flush() was simply never executed
anymore. Fix it by introducing a wrapper for tlb_flush() in a file
that is re-compiled for each target, i.e. in translate-all.c.

Some code paths can lead to atomic accesses racing with memset()
on cpu->tb_jmp_cache, which can result in torn reads/writes
and is undefined behaviour in C11.
These torn accesses are unlikely to show up as bugs, but from code
inspection they seem possible. For example, tb_phys_invalidate does:
/* remove the TB from the hash list */
h = tb_jmp_cache_hash_func(tb->pc);
CPU_FOREACH(cpu) {
if (atomic_read(&cpu->tb_jmp_cache[h]) == tb) {
atomic_set(&cpu->tb_jmp_cache[h], NULL);
}
}
Here atomic_set might race with a concurrent memset (such as the
ones scheduled via "unsafe" async work, e.g. tlb_flush_page) and
therefore we might end up with a torn pointer (or who knows what,
because we are under undefined behaviour).
This patch converts parallel accesses to cpu->tb_jmp_cache to use
atomic primitives, thereby bringing these accesses back to defined
behaviour. The price to pay is to potentially execute more instructions
when clearing cpu->tb_jmp_cache, but given how infrequently they happen
and the small size of the cache, the performance impact I have measured
is within noise range when booting debian-arm.
Note that under "safe async" work (e.g. do_tb_flush) we could use memset
because no other vcpus are running. However I'm keeping these accesses
atomic as well to keep things simple and to avoid confusing analysis
tools such as ThreadSanitizer.

Currently objects specified on the command-line are only partially
cleaned up when 'object_del' is issued in either HMP or QMP: the
object itself is fully finalized, but the QemuOpts are not removed.
This results in the following behavior:
x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -monitor stdio \
-object memory-backend-ram,id=ram1,size=256M
QEMU 2.7.91 monitor - type 'help' for more information
(qemu) object_del ram1
(qemu) object_del ram1
object 'ram1' not found
(qemu) object_add memory-backend-ram,id=ram1,size=256M
Duplicate ID 'ram1' for object
Try "help object_add" for more information
which can be an issue for use-cases like memory hotplug.
This happens on the HMP side because hmp_object_add() attempts to
create a temporary QemuOpts entry with ID 'ram1', which ends up
conflicting with the command-line-created entry, since it was never
cleaned up during the previous hmp_object_del() call.
We address this by adding a check in user_creatable_del(), which
is called by both qmp_object_del() and hmp_object_del() to handle
the actual object cleanup, to determine whether an option group entry
matching the object's ID is present and removing it if it is.
Note that qmp_object_add() never attempts to create a temporary
QemuOpts entry, so it does not encounter the duplicate ID error,
which is why this isn't generally visible in libvirt.

cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet was introduced by commit
efec3dd631 to replace no_user. It was
supposed to be a temporary measure.
When it was introduced, we had 54
cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines in the code.
Today (3 years later) this number has not shrunk: we now have
57 cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines. I think it
is safe to say it is not a temporary measure, and we won't see
the flag go away soon.
Instead of a long field name that misleads people to believe it
is temporary, replace it a shorter and less misleading field:
user_creatable.

A regression in commit 15c2f669e caused us to silently ignore
excess input to the QemuOpts visitor. Later, commit ea4641
accidentally abused that situation, by removing "qom-type" and
"id" from the corresponding QDict but leaving them defined in
the QemuOpts, when using the pair of containers to create a
user-defined object. Note that since we are already traversing
two separate items (a QDict and a QemuOpts), we are already
able to flag bogus arguments, as in:
$ ./x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -nodefaults -nographic -qmp stdio -object memory-backend-ram,id=mem1,size=4k,bogus=huh
qemu-system-x86_64: -object memory-backend-ram,id=mem1,size=4k,bogus=huh: Property '.bogus' not found
So the only real concern is that when we re-enable strict checking
in the QemuOpts visitor, we do not want to start flagging the two
leftover keys as unvisited. Rearrange the code to clean out the
QemuOpts listing in advance, rather than removing items from the
QDict. Since "qom-type" is usually an automatic implicit default,
we don't have to restore it (this does mean that once instantiated,
QemuOpts is not necessarily an accurate representation of the
original command line - but this is not the first place to do that);
however "id" has to be put back (requiring us to cast away a const).
[As a side note, hmp_object_add() turns a QDict into a QemuOpts,
then calls user_creatable_add_opts() which converts QemuOpts into
a new QDict. There are probably a lot of wasteful conversions like
this, but cleaning them up is a much bigger task than the immediate
regression fix.]

Commit 240f64b made all qobject input visitors created outside tests
strict, except for the one in object_property_set_qobject(). That one
was left behind only because Eric couldn't spare the time to figure
out whether making it strict would break anything, with a TODO
comment. Time to resolve it.
Strict makes a difference only for otherwise successful visits of QAPI
structs or unions. Let's examine what the callers of
object_property_set_qobject() visit:
* object_property_set_str(), object_property_set_bool(),
object_property_set_int() visit a QString, QBool, QInt,
respectively. Strictness can't matter.
* qmp_qom_set visits its @value argument. Comes straight from QMP and
can be anything ('any' in the QAPI schema). Strictness matters when
the property's set() method visits a struct or union QAPI type.
No such methods exist, thus switching to strict can't break
anything.
If we acquire such methods in the future, we'll *want* the visitor
to be strict, so that unexpected members get rejected as they should
be.
Switch to strict.

This finally allows TCG to benefit from the iothread introduction: Drop
the global mutex while running pure TCG CPU code. Reacquire the lock
when entering MMIO or PIO emulation, or when leaving the TCG loop.
We have to revert a few optimization for the current TCG threading
model, namely kicking the TCG thread in qemu_mutex_lock_iothread and not
kicking it in qemu_cpu_kick. We also need to disable RAM block
reordering until we have a more efficient locking mechanism at hand.
Still, a Linux x86 UP guest and my Musicpal ARM model boot fine here.
These numbers demonstrate where we gain something:

20337 jan 20 0 331m 75m 6904 S 20 0.9 0:26.50 qemu-system-arm

32204 jan 20 0 330m 73m 7036 S 21 0.9 0:17.03 qemu-system-arm

In BE32 mode, sub-word size watchpoints can fail to trigger because the
address of the access is adjusted in the opcode helpers before being
compared with the watchpoint registers. This patch reverses the address
adjustment before performing the comparison with the help of a new CPUClass
hook.
This version of the patch augments and tidies up comments a little.

It is a common thing amongst the various cpu reset functions want to
flush the SoftMMU's TLB entries. This is done either by calling
tlb_flush directly or by way of a general memset of the CPU
structure (sometimes both).
This moves the tlb_flush call to the common reset function and
additionally ensures it is only done for the CONFIG_SOFTMMU case and
when tcg is enabled.
In some target cases we add an empty end_of_reset_fields structure to the
target vCPU structure so have a clear end point for any memset which
is resetting value in the structure before CPU_COMMON (where the TLB
structures are).
While this is a nice clean-up in general it is also a precursor for
changes coming to cputlb for MTTCG where the clearing of entries
can't be done arbitrarily across vCPUs. Currently the cpu_reset
function is usually called from the context of another vCPU as the
architectural power up sequence is run. By using the cputlb API
functions we can ensure the right behaviour in the future.

Currently CPUClass->parse_features() is used to parse -cpu
features string and set properties on created CPU instances.
But considering that features specified by -cpu apply to every
created CPU instance, it doesn't make sense to parse the same
features string for every CPU created. It also makes every target
that cares about parsing features string explicitly call
CPUClass->parse_features() parser, which gets in a way if we
consider using generic device_add for CPU hotplug as device_add
has not a clue about CPU specific hooks.
Turns out we can use global properties mechanism to set
properties on every created CPU instance for a given type. That
way it's possible to convert CPU features into a set of global
properties for CPU type specified by -cpu cpu_model and common
Device.device_post_init() will apply them to CPU of given type
automatically regardless whether it's manually created CPU or CPU
created with help of device_add.

Making each output visitor provide its own output collection
function was the only remaining reason for exposing visitor
sub-types to the rest of the code base. Add a polymorphic
visit_complete() function which is a no-op for input visitors,
and which populates an opaque pointer for output visitors. For
maximum type-safety, also add a parameter to the output visitor
constructors with a type-correct version of the output pointer,
and assert that the two uses match.
This approach was considered superior to either passing the
output parameter only during construction (action at a distance
during visit_free() feels awkward) or only during visit_complete()
(defeating type safety makes it easier to use incorrectly).
Most callers were function-local, and therefore a mechanical
conversion; the testsuite was a bit trickier, but the previous
cleanup patch minimized the churn here.
The visit_complete() function may be called at most once; doing
so lets us use transfer semantics rather than duplication or
ref-count semantics to get the just-built output back to the
caller, even though it means our behavior is not idempotent.

Rather than making the dealloc visitor track of stack of pointers
remembered during visit_start_* in order to free them during
visit_end_*, it's a lot easier to just make all callers pass the
same pointer to visit_end_*. The generated code has access to the
same pointer, while all other users are doing virtual walks and
can pass NULL. The dealloc visitor is then greatly simplified.
All three visit_end_*() functions intentionally take a void**,
even though the visit_start_*() functions differ between void**,
GenericList**, and GenericAlternate**. This is done for several
reasons: when doing a virtual walk, passing NULL doesn't care
what the type is, but when doing a generated walk, we already
have to cast the caller's specific FOO* to call visit_start,
while using void** lets us use visit_end without a cast. Also,
an upcoming patch will add a clone visitor that wants to use
the same implementation for all three visit_end callbacks,
which is made easier if all three share the same signature.
For visitors with already track per-object state (the QMP visitors
via a stack, and the string visitors which do not allow nesting),
add an assertion that the caller is indeed passing the same
pointer to paired calls.

As mentioned in previous patches, we want to call visit_end_struct()
functions unconditionally, so that visitors can release resources
tied up since the matching visit_start_struct() without also having
to worry about error priority if more than one error occurs.
Even though error_propagate() can be safely used to ignore a second
error during cleanup caused by a first error, it is simpler if the
cleanup cannot set an error. So, split out the error checking
portion (basically, input visitors checking for unvisited keys) into
a new function visit_check_struct(), which can be safely skipped if
any earlier errors are encountered, and leave the cleanup portion
(which never fails, but must be called unconditionally if
visit_start_struct() succeeded) in visit_end_struct().

[Conflict with a doc fixup resolved]
Signed-off-by: Markus Armbruster <armbru@redhat.com>
The qmp-input visitor was allowing callers to play rather fast
and loose: when visiting a QDict, you could grab members of the
root dictionary without first pushing into the dict; the final
such culprit was the QOM code for converting to and from object
properties. But we are about to tighten the input visitor, at
which point user_creatable_add_type() as called with a QMP input
visitor via qmp_object_add() MUST follow the same paradigms as
everyone else, of pushing into the struct before grabbing its
keys.
The use of 'err ? NULL : &err' is temporary; a later patch will
clean that up when it splits visit_end_struct().
Furthermore, note that both callers always pass qdict, so we can
convert the conditional into an assert and reduce indentation.
The change has no impact to the testsuite now, but is required to
avoid a failure in tests/test-netfilter once qmp-input is made
stricter to detect inconsistent 'name' arguments on the root visit.
Since user_creatable_add_type() is also called with OptsVisitor
through user_creatable_add_opts(), we must also check that there
is no negative impact there; both pre- and post-patch, we see:
$ ./x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -nographic -nodefaults -qmp stdio -object secret,id=sec0,data=letmein,format=raw,foo=bar
qemu-system-x86_64: -object secret,id=sec0,data=letmein,format=raw,foo=bar: Property '.foo' not found
That is, the only new checking that the new visit_end_struct() can
perform is for excess input, but we already catch excess input
earlier in object_property_set().

The following uses of a QMP input visitor should be strict
(that is, excess keys in QDict input should be flagged if not
converted to QAPI):
- Testsuite code unrelated to explicitly testing non-strict
mode (test-qmp-commands, test-visitor-serialization); since
we want more code to be strict by default, having more tests
of strict mode doesn't hurt
- Code used for cloning QAPI objects (replay-input.c,
qemu-sockets.c); we are reparsing a QObject just barely
produced by the qmp output visitor and which therefore should
not have any garbage, so while it is extra work to be strict,
it validates that our clone is correct [note that a later patch
series will simplify these two uses by creating an actual
clone visitor that is much more efficient than a
generate/reparse cycle]
- qmp_object_add(), which calls into user_creatable_add_type().
Since command line parsing for '-object' uses the same
user_creatable_add_type() through the OptsVisitor, and that is
always strict, we want to ensure that any nested dictionaries
would be treated the same in QMP and from the command line (I
don't actually know if such nested dictionaries exist). Note
that on this code change, strictness only matters for nested
dictionaries (if even possible), since we already flag excess
input at the top level during an earlier object_property_set()
on an unknown key, whether from QemuOpts:
$ ./x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -nographic -nodefaults -qmp stdio -object secret,id=sec0,data=letmein,format=raw,foo=bar
qemu-system-x86_64: -object secret,id=sec0,data=letmein,format=raw,foo=bar: Property '.foo' not found
or from QMP:
$ ./x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -nographic -nodefaults -qmp stdio
{"QMP": {"version": {"qemu": {"micro": 93, "minor": 5, "major": 2}, "package": ""}, "capabilities": []}}
{"execute":"qmp_capabilities"}
{"return": {}}
{"execute":"object-add","arguments":{"qom-type":"secret","id":"sec0","props":{"format":"raw","data":"letmein","foo":"bar"}}}
{"error": {"class": "GenericError", "desc": "Property '.foo' not found"}}
The only remaining uses of non-strict input visits are:
- QMP 'qom-set' (which eventually executes
object_property_set_qobject()) - mark it as something to revisit
in the future (I didn't want to spend any more time on this patch
auditing if we have any QOM dictionary properties that might be
impacted, and couldn't easily prove whether this code path is
shared with anything else).
- test-qmp-input-visitor: explicit tests of non-strict mode. If
we later get rid of users that don't need strictness, then this
test should be merged with test-qmp-input-strict

Rather than having two separate ways to create a QMP input
visitor, where the safer approach has the more verbose name,
it is better to consolidate things into a single function
where the caller must explicitly choose whether to be strict
or to ignore excess input. This patch is the strictly
mechanical conversion; the next patch will then audit which
uses can be made stricter.

qemu_opts_foreach() runs its callback with the error location set to
the option's location. Any errors the callback reports use the
option's location automatically.
Commit 90998d5 moved the actual error reporting from "inside"
qemu_opts_foreach() to after it. Here's a typical hunk:
if (qemu_opts_foreach(qemu_find_opts("object"),
- object_create,
- object_create_initial, NULL)) {
+ user_creatable_add_opts_foreach,
+ object_create_initial, &err)) {
+ error_report_err(err);
exit(1);
}
Before, object_create() reports from within qemu_opts_foreach(), using
the option's location. Afterwards, we do it after
qemu_opts_foreach(), using whatever location happens to be current
there. Commonly a "none" location.
This is because Error objects don't have location information.
Problematic.
Reproducer:
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -nodefaults -display none -object secret,id=foo,foo=bar
qemu-system-x86_64: Property '.foo' not found
Note no location. This commit restores it:
qemu-system-x86_64: -object secret,id=foo,foo=bar: Property '.foo' not found
Note that the qemu_opts_foreach() bug just fixed could mask the bug
here: if the location it leaves dangling hasn't been clobbered, yet,
it's the correct one.

Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.
Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.
Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.
This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

The QMP monitor code has two helper methods object_add
and qmp_object_del that are called from several places
in the code (QMP, HMP and main emulator startup).
The HMP and main emulator startup code also share
further logic that extracts the qom-type & id
values from a qdict.
We soon need to use this logic from qemu-img, qemu-io
and qemu-nbd too, but don't want those to depend on
the monitor, nor do we want to duplicate the code.
To avoid this, move some code out of qmp.c and hmp.c
adding new methods to qom/object_interfaces.c
- user_creatable_add - takes a QDict holding a full
object definition & instantiates it
- user_creatable_add_type - takes an ID, type name,
and QDict holding object properties & instantiates
it
- user_creatable_add_opts - takes a QemuOpts holding
a full object definition & instantiates it
- user_creatable_add_opts_foreach - variant on
user_creatable_add_opts which can be directly used
in conjunction with qemu_opts_foreach.
- user_creatable_del - takes an ID and deletes the
corresponding object
The existing code is updated to use these new methods.

JSON uses "name":value, but many of our visitor interfaces were
called with visit_type_FOO(v, &value, name, errp). This can be
a bit confusing to have to mentally swap the parameter order to
match JSON order. It's particularly bad for visit_start_struct(),
where the 'name' parameter is smack in the middle of the
otherwise-related group of 'obj, kind, size' parameters! It's
time to do a global swap of the parameter ordering, so that the
'name' parameter is always immediately after the Visitor argument.
Additional reason in favor of the swap: the existing include/qjson.h
prefers listing 'name' first in json_prop_*(), and I have plans to
unify that file with the qapi visitors; listing 'name' first in
qapi will minimize churn to the (admittedly few) qjson.h clients.
Later patches will then fix docs, object.h, visitor-impl.h, and
those clients to match.
Done by first patching scripts/qapi*.py by hand to make generated
files do what I want, then by running the following Coccinelle
script to affect the rest of the code base:
$ spatch --sp-file script `git grep -l '\bvisit_' -- '**/*.[ch]'`
I then had to apply some touchups (Coccinelle insisted on TAB
indentation in visitor.h, and botched the signature of
visit_type_enum() by rewriting 'const char *const strings[]' to
the syntactically invalid 'const char*const[] strings'). The
movement of parameters is sufficient to provoke compiler errors
if any callers were missed.

Currently the ObjectProperty iterator API works as follows:
ObjectPropertyIterator *iter;
iter = object_property_iter_init(obj);
while ((prop = object_property_iter_next(iter))) {
...
}
object_property_iter_free(iter);
This has the benefit that the ObjectPropertyIterator struct
can be opaque, but has the downside that callers need to

When there are many instances of a given class, registering
properties against the instance is wasteful of resources. The
majority of objects have a statically defined list of possible
properties, so most of the properties are easily registerable
against the class. Only those properties which are conditionally
registered at runtime need be recorded against the klass.
Registering properties against classes also makes it possible
to provide static introspection of QOM - currently introspection
is only possible after creating an instance of a class, which
severely limits its usefulness.
This impl only supports simple scalar properties. It does not
attempt to allow child object / link object properties against
the class. There are ways to support those too, but it would
make this patch more complicated, so it is left as an exercise
for the future.
There is no equivalent to object_property_del() provided, since
classes must be immutable once they are defined.

ARM GICv3 systems with large number of CPUs create lots of IRQ pins. Since
every pin is represented as a property, number of these properties becomes
very large. Every property add first makes sure there's no duplicates.
Traversing the list becomes very slow, therefore QEMU initialization takes
significant time (several seconds for e. g. 16 CPUs).
This patch replaces list with GHashTable, making lookup very fast. The only
drawback is that object_child_foreach() and object_child_foreach_recursive()
cannot add or remove properties during traversal, since GHashTableIter does
not have modify-safe version. However, the code seems not to modify objects
via these functions.

Some users of QOM need to be able to iterate over properties
defined against an object instance. Currently they are just
directly using the QTAIL macros against the object properties
data structure.
This is bad because it exposes them to changes in the data
structure used to store properties, as well as changes in
functionality such as ability to register properties against
the class.
This provides an ObjectPropertyIterator struct which will
insulate the callers from the particular data structure
used to store properties. It can be used thus
ObjectProperty *prop;
ObjectPropertyIterator *iter;
iter = object_property_iter_init(obj);
while ((prop = object_property_iter_next(iter))) {

After commit 626cf8f (icount: set can_do_io outside TB execution,
2014-12-08), can_do_io is set to 1 if not executing code. It is
no longer necessary to make this assumption in cpu_can_do_io.
It is also possible to remove the use_icount test, simply by
never setting cpu->can_do_io to 0 unless use_icount is true.
With these changes cpu_can_do_io boils down to a read of
cpu->can_do_io.

Currently CPUState::cpu_index is monotonically increasing and a newly
created CPU always gets the next higher index. The next available
index is calculated by counting the existing number of CPUs. This is
fine as long as we only add CPUs, but there are architectures which
are starting to support CPU removal, too. For an architecture like PowerPC
which derives its CPU identifier (device tree ID) from cpu_index, the
existing logic of generating cpu_index values causes problems.
With the currently proposed method of handling vCPU removal by parking
the vCPU fd in QEMU
(Ref: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2015-02/msg02604.html),
generating cpu_index this way will not work for PowerPC.
This patch changes the way cpu_index is handed out by maintaining
a bit map of the CPUs that tracks both addition and removal of CPUs.
The CPU bitmap allocation logic is part of cpu_exec_init(), which is
called by instance_init routines of various CPU targets. Newly added
cpu_exec_exit() API handles the deallocation part and this routine is
called from generic CPU instance_finalize.
Note: This new CPU enumeration is for !CONFIG_USER_ONLY only.
CONFIG_USER_ONLY continues to have the old enumeration logic.

A QOM property can be parsed as enum using the visit_type_enum()
helper function, but this forces callers to use the more complex
generic object_property_add() method when registering it. It
also requires that users of that object have access to the
string map when they want to read the property value.
This patch introduces a specialized object_property_add_enum()
method which simplifies the use of enum properties, so the
setters/getters directly get passed the int value.
typedef enum {
MYDEV_TYPE_FROG,
MYDEV_TYPE_ALLIGATOR,
MYDEV_TYPE_PLATYPUS,
MYDEV_TYPE_LAST
} MyDevType;
Then provide a table of enum <-> string mappings
static const char *const mydevtypemap[MYDEV_TYPE_LAST + 1] = {
[MYDEV_TYPE_FROG] = "frog",
[MYDEV_TYPE_ALLIGATOR] = "alligator",
[MYDEV_TYPE_PLATYPUS] = "platypus",
[MYDEV_TYPE_LAST] = NULL,
};
Assuming an object struct of
typedef struct {
Object parent_obj;
MyDevType devtype;
...other fields...
} MyDev;
The property can then be registered as follows:
static int mydev_prop_get_devtype(Object *obj,
Error **errp G_GNUC_UNUSED)
{
MyDev *dev = MYDEV(obj);
return dev->devtype;
}
static void mydev_prop_set_devtype(Object *obj,
int value,
Error **errp G_GNUC_UNUSED)
{
MyDev *dev = MYDEV(obj);
dev->devtype = value;
}
object_property_add_enum(obj, "devtype",
mydevtypemap, "MyDevType",
mydev_prop_get_devtype,
mydev_prop_set_devtype,
NULL);
Note there is no need to check the range of 'value' in
the setter, because the string->enum conversion code will
have already done that and reported an error as required.

It is reasonably common to want to create an object, set a
number of properties, register it in the hierarchy and then
mark it as complete (if a user creatable type). This requires
quite a lot of error prone, verbose, boilerplate code to achieve.
First a pair of functions object_set_props() / object_set_propv()
are added which allow for a list of objects to be set in
one single API call.
Then object_new_with_props() / object_new_with_propv() constructors
are added which simplify the sequence of calls to create an
object, populate properties, register in the object composition
tree and mark the object complete, into a single method call.
Usage would be:
Error *err = NULL;
Object *obj;
obj = object_new_with_propv(TYPE_MEMORY_BACKEND_FILE,
object_get_objects_root(),
"hostmem0",
&err,
"share", "yes",
"mem-path", "/dev/shm/somefile",
"prealloc", "yes",
"size", "1048576",

1. The link property may be set at any time.
2. The link property of a DeviceState instance may only be set before

3. The link property may never be set, it is read-only.
Something similar can already be achieved with
object_property_add_str()'s set() argument. Follow its example and add
a check() argument to object_property_add_link().
Also provide default check() functions for case #1 and #2. Case #3 is

Some object_property_add_link() callers expect property deletion to
unref the link property object. Other callers expect to manage the
refcount themselves. The former are currently broken and therefore leak
the link property object.
This patch adds a flags argument to object_property_add_link() so the
caller can specify which refcount behavior they require. The new
OBJ_PROP_LINK_UNREF_ON_RELEASE flag causes the link pointer to be
unreferenced when the property is deleted.
This fixes refcount leaks in qdev.c, xilinx_axidma.c, xilinx_axienet.c,
s390-virtio-bus.c, virtio-pci.c, virtio-rng.c, and ui/console.c.
Rationale for refcount behavior:
* hw/core/qdev.c
- bus children are explicitly unreferenced, don't interfere
- parent_bus is essentially a read-only property that doesn't hold a
refcount, don't unref
- hotplug_handler is leaked, do unref
* hw/dma/xilinx_axidma.c
- rx stream "dma" links are set using set_link, therefore they
need unref
- tx streams are set using set_link, therefore they need unref
* hw/net/xilinx_axienet.c
- same reasoning as hw/dma/xilinx_axidma.c
* hw/pcmcia/pxa2xx.c
- pxa2xx bypasses set_link and therefore does not use refcounts
* hw/s390x/s390-virtio-bus.c
* hw/virtio/virtio-pci.c
* hw/virtio/virtio-rng.c
* ui/console.c
- set_link is used and there is no explicit unref, do unref

There should be no need to look up nor enumerate the interface "types",
whose "classes" are really just vtables. Just create the types and
add them to the interface list of the parent type.
Interfaces not registering their type anymore means that accessing
superclass::interface by type name will fail when initializing
subclass::interface. Thus, we need to pre-initialize the subclass's
parent_type field before calling type_initialize. Apart from this, the
interface "types" should never be used and thus it is harmless to leave
them out of the hashtable.
Further, the interface types had a bug with interfaces that are
inherited from a superclass: The implementation type name was wrong
(for example it was subclass::superclass::interface rather than
just subclass::interface). This patch fixes this as well.

The object-cast and class-cast caches cannot be shared because class
caching is conditional on the target type not being an interface and
object caching is unconditional. Leads to a bug when a class cast
to an interface follows an object cast to the same interface type:
FooObject = FOO(obj);
FooClass = FOO_GET_CLASS(obj);
Where TYPE_FOO is an interface. The first (object) cast will be
successful and cache the casting result (i.e. TYPE_FOO will be cached).
The second (class) cast will then check the shared cast cache
and register a hit. The issue is, when a class cast hits in the cache
it just returns a pointer cast of the input class (i.e. the concrete
class).
When casting to an interface, the cast itself must return the
interface class, not the concrete class. The implementation of class
cast caching already ensures that the returned cast result is only
a pointer cast before caching. The object cast logic however does
not have this check.
Resolve by just splitting the object and class caches.

In an ideal world, machines can be built by wiring devices together
with configuration, not code. Unfortunately, that's not the world we
live in right now. We still have quite a few devices that need to be
wired up by code. If you try to device_add such a device, it'll fail
in sometimes mysterious ways. If you're lucky, you get an
unmysterious immediate crash.
To protect users from such badness, DeviceClass member no_user used to
make device models unavailable with -device / device_add, but that
regressed in commit 18b6dad. The device model is still omitted from
help, but is available anyway.
Attempts to fix the regression have been rejected with the argument
that the purpose of no_user isn't clear, and it's prone to misuse.
This commit clarifies no_user's purpose. Anthony suggested to rename
it cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet_due_to_internal_bugs, which
I shorten somewhat to keep checkpatch happy. While there, make it
bool.
Every use of cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet gets a FIXME
comment asking for rationale. The next few commits will clean them
all up, either by providing a rationale, or by getting rid of the use.
With that done, the regression fix is hopefully acceptable.

Move this call up into the generic cpu_dump_state() function so that
other KVM targets (namely MIPS) can take advantage of it.
This requires kvm_cpu_synchronize_state() and cpu_synchronize_state() to

Commit a0e372f0c4 reorganized the register
counting for GDB. While it seems correct not to let the total number of
registers skyrocket in an SMP scenario through a static variable, the
distinction between total register count and 'g' packet register count
(last_reg vs. num_g_regs) got lost among the way.
Fix this by introducing CPUState::gdb_num_g_regs and using that in
gdb_handle_packet().

Commit c643bed99 moved qemu_init_vcpu() calls to common CPUState code.
This causes x86 cpu-add to fail with "KVM: setting VAPIC address failed".
The reason for the failure is that CPUClass::kvm_fd is not yet
initialized in the following call graph:
->x86_cpu_realizefn
->x86_cpu_apic_realize
->qdev_init
->device_set_realized
->device_reset (hotplugged == 1)
->apic_reset_common
->vapic_base_update
->kvm_apic_vapic_base_update
This causes attempted KVM vCPU ioctls to fail.
By contrast, in the non-hotplug case the APIC is reset much later, when
the vCPU is already initialized.
As a quick and safe solution, move the qemu_init_vcpu() call back into
the targets' realize functions.

This patch adds a small typename cache to ObjectClass. This allows
caching positive casts within each ObjectClass. Benchmarking a
PPC workload provided by Aurelien, this patch eliminates every
single g_hash_table_lookup() happening during the benchmark (which
was about 2 million per-second).
With this patch applied, I get exactly the same performance (within
the margin of error) as with --disable-qom-cast-debug.

num_interfaces only tells you how many interfaces the concrete child class has
(as defined in the TypeInfo). This means if you have a child class which defines
no interfaces of its own, but its parent has interfaces you cannot cast to those
parent interfaces.

The QOM framework will attempt the recreate a classes interface list from
scratch for each class. This means that a child class should zero out the
list of interfaces when cloned from the parent class.
Currently the list is memcpy()d from the parent to the child. As the interface
list is just a pointer to a list, this means the parent and child will share
the same list of interfaces. When the child inits, it will append its own
interfaces to the parents list. This is incorrect as the parent should not pick
up its childs interfaces.
This actually causes an infinite loop at class init time, as the child will
iterate through the parent interface list adding each itf to its own list(in
type_initialize()). As the list is (erroneously) shared, the new interface
instances for the child are appended to the parent, and the iterator never hits
the tail and loops forever.

object_deinit is only called when the reference count goes to zero,
and yet tries to do an object_unparent. Now, object_unparent
either does nothing or it will decrease the reference count.
Because we know the reference count is zero, the object_unparent
call in object_deinit is useless.
Instead, we need to disconnect the object from its parent just
before we remove the last reference apart from the parent's. This
happens in object_delete. Once we do this, all calls to

The current implementation of Interfaces is poorly designed. Each interface
that an object implements ends up being an object that's tracked by the
implementing object. There's all sorts of gymnastics to deal with casting
between these objects.
But an interface shouldn't be associated with an Object. Interfaces are global
to a class. This patch moves all Interface knowledge to ObjectClass eliminating
the relationship between Object and Interfaces.
Interfaces are now abstract (as they should be) but this is okay. Interfaces
essentially act as additional parents for the classes and are treated as such.
With this new implementation, we should fully support derived interfaces
including reimplementing an inherited interface.
