This patch fixed a problem that was introduced in commit eb700029.
When net_rx_pkt_attach_iovec() calls eth_strip_vlan()
this can result in pkt->ehdr_buf being overflowed, because
ehdr_buf is only sizeof(struct eth_header) bytes large
but eth_strip_vlan() can write
sizeof(struct eth_header) + sizeof(struct vlan_header)
bytes into it.
Devices affected by this problem: vmxnet3.

The spapr-vlan device in QEMU has always presented it's MAC address in
the device tree as an 8 byte value, even though PAPR requires it to be
6 bytes. This is because, at the time, AIX required the value to be 8
bytes. However, modern versions of AIX support the (correct) 6
byte value so they no longer require the workaround.
It would be neatest to always provide a 6 byte value but that would
cause a problem with old Linux kernel ibmveth drivers, so the old 8
byte value is still presented when necessary.
Since commit 13f85203e (3.10, May 2013) the driver has been able to
handle 6 or 8 byte addresses so versions after that don't need to be
considered specially.
Drivers from kernels before that can also handle either type of
address, but not always:
* If the first byte's lowest bits are 10, the address must be 6 bytes.
* Otherwise, the address must be 8 bytes.
(The two bits in question are significant in a MAC address: they
indicate a locally-administered unicast address.)
So to maintain compatibility the old 8 byte value is presented when
the lowest two bits of the first byte are not 10.

Merge fix against Halil's removal of the '_start' field in
VMSTATE_VBUFFER_MULTIPLY
The member VMStateField.start is used for two things, partial data
migration for VBUFFER data (basically provide migration for a
sub-buffer) and for locating next in QTAILQ.
The implementation of the VBUFFER feature is broken when VMSTATE_ALLOC

access via the MCTL register, clear the START bit,
so that when the guest reads it back the register

This avoids the guest spinning as it polls the

The dp8393x has several 32-bit values which are formed by concatenating
two 16 bit device register values. Attempting to do these inline
with ((s->reg[HI] << 16) | s->reg[LO]) can result in an unintended
sign extension because "x << 16" is of type 'int' even though s->reg
is unsigned, and so if the expression is used in a context where
it is cast to uint64_t the value is incorrectly sign-extended.
Fix this by using accessor functions with a uint32_t return type;
this also makes the code a bit easier to read.
This should fix Coverity issues 1307765, 1307766, 1307767, 1307768.

This patches implements Device IOTLB support for vhost kernel. This is
done through:
1) switch to use dma helpers when map/unmap vrings from vhost codes
2) introduce a set of VhostOps to:
- setting up device IOTLB request callback
- processing device IOTLB request
- processing device IOTLB invalidation
2) kernel support for Device IOTLB API:
- allow vhost-net to query the IOMMU IOTLB entry through eventfd
- enable the ability for qemu to update a specified mapping of vhost
- through ioctl.
- enable the ability to invalidate a specified range of iova for the
device IOTLB of vhost through ioctl. In x86/intel_iommu case this is
triggered through iommu memory region notifier from device IOTLB
invalidation descriptor processing routine.
With all the above, kernel vhost_net can co-operate with userspace
IOMMU. For vhost-user, the support could be easily done on top by
implementing the VhostOps.

Current code that handles Tx buffer desciprtor ring scanning employs the
following algorithm:
1. Restore current buffer descriptor pointer from TBPTRn
2. Process current descriptor
3. If current descriptor has BD_WRAP flag set set current
descriptor pointer to start of the descriptor ring
4. If current descriptor points to start of the ring exit the
loop, otherwise increment current descriptor pointer and go
to #2
5. Store current descriptor in TBPTRn
The way the code is implemented results in buffer descriptor ring being
scanned starting at offset/descriptor #0. While covering 99% of the
cases, this algorithm becomes problematic for a number of edge cases.
Consider the following scenario: guest OS driver initializes descriptor
ring to N individual descriptors and starts sending data out. Depending
on the volume of traffic and probably guest OS driver implementation it
is possible that an edge case where a packet, spread across 2
descriptors is placed in descriptors N - 1 and 0 in that order(it is
easy to imagine similar examples involving more than 2 descriptors).
What happens then is aforementioned algorithm starts at descriptor 0,
sees a descriptor marked as BD_LAST, which it happily sends out as a
separate packet(very much malformed at this point) then the iteration
continues and the first part of the original packet is tacked to the
next transmission which ends up being bogus as well.
This behvaiour can be pretty reliably observed when scp'ing data from a
guest OS via TAP interface for files larger than 160K (every time for
700K+).
This patch changes the scanning algorithm to do the following:
1. Restore "current" buffer descriptor pointer from
TBPTRn
2. If "current" descriptor does not have BD_TX_READY set, goto #6
3. Process current descriptor
4. If "current" descriptor has BD_WRAP flag set "current"
descriptor pointer to start of the descriptor ring otherwise
set increment "current" by the size of one descriptor
5. Goto #1
6. Save "current" buffer descriptor in TBPTRn
This way we preserve the information about which descriptor was
processed last and always start where we left off avoiding the original
problem. On top of that, judging by the following excerpt from
MPC8548ERM (p. 14-48):
"... When the end of the TxBD ring is reached, eTSEC initializes TBPTRn
to the value in the corresponding TBASEn. The TBPTR register is
internally written by the eTSEC’s DMA controller during
transmission. The pointer increments by eight (bytes) each time a
descriptor is closed successfully by the eTSEC..."
revised algorithm might also a more correct way of emulating this aspect
of eTSEC peripheral.

Depending on QEMU network setup it is possible for us to receive a
complete Ethernet packet that is less 64 bytes long. One such example is
when QEMU is configured to use a standalone TAP device (not set to be a

to add more than just 4-bytes of CRC padding and ensure that our payload
is at least 60 bytes long, such that, when combined with CRC padding
bytes the resulting size is at least 802.3 minimum MTU bytes

The e1000e emulation zeroes out any used rx descriptor and then writes a
completely newly constructed value there. By doing this, it doesn't only
update the write-back area of the descriptors (as it's supposed to do),
but it also clears the buffer address, which real hardware doesn't do.
The spec explicitly mentions in chapter 7.1.8 that it is valid for a
driver to reuse a descriptor and only update the status field while
doing so, i.e. reusing the old buffer address:
If software statically allocates buffers, and uses memory read to
check for completed descriptors, it simply has to zero the status
byte in the descriptor to make it ready for reuse by hardware.
This patch fixes the behaviour to leave the buffer address in
descriptors unchanged even after the descriptor has been used.

This allows increasing the rx queue size up to 1024: unlike with tx,
guests don't put in huge S/G lists into RX so the risk of running into
the max 1024 limitation due to some off-by-one seems small.
It's helpful for users like OVS-DPDK which don't do any buffering on the
host - 1K roughly matches 500 entries in tun + 256 in the current rx
queue, which seems to work reasonably well. We could probably make do
with ~750 entries but virtio spec limits us to powers of two.
It might be a good idea to specify an s/g size limit in a future
version.
It also might be possible to make the queue size smaller down the road, 64
seems like the minimal value which will still work (as guests seem to
assume a queue full of 1.5K buffers is enough to process the largest
incoming packet, which is ~64K). No one actually asked for this, and
with virtio 1 guests can reduce ring size without need for host
configuration, so don't bother with this for now.

This is a mostly-mechanical conversion that creates a new flat
union 'Netdev' QAPI type that covers all the branches of the
former 'NetClientOptions' simple union, where the branches are
now listed in a new 'NetClientDriver' enum rather than generated
from the simple union. The existence of a flat union has no
change to the command line syntax accepted for new code, and
will make it possible for a future patch to switch the QMP
command to parse a boxed union for no change to valid QMP; but
it does have some ripple effect on the C code when dealing with
the new types.
While making the conversion, note that the 'NetLegacy' type
remains unchanged: it applies only to legacy command line options,
and will not be ported to QMP, so it should remain a wrapper
around a simple union; to avoid confusion, the type named
'NetClientOptions' is now gone, and we introduce 'NetLegacyOptions'
in its place. Then, in the C code, we convert from NetLegacy to
Netdev as soon as possible, so that the bulk of the net stack
only has to deal with one QAPI type, not two. Note that since
the old legacy code always rejected 'hubport', we can just omit
that branch from the new 'NetLegacyOptions' simple union.

When a PCI device lives behind an IOMMU, it should use 'pci_dma_*' family of
functions when any transfer from/to guest memory is required while
'cpu_physical_memory_*' family of functions completely bypass any MMU/IOMMU in
the system.
vmxnet3 in some places was using 'cpu_physical_memory_*' family of functions
which works fine with the default QEMU setup where IOMMU is not enabled but
fails miserably when IOMMU is enabled. This commit converts all such instances
in favor of 'pci_dma_*'

Commit 9d29cdeaac (rtl8139: port
TallyCounters to vmstate) introduced in incompatibility in the v4
format as it omitted the RxOkMul counter.
There are presumably no users that were impacted by the v4 to v4'
breakage, so increase the save version to 5 and re-add the field,
keeping backward compatibility with v4'.
We can't have a field conditional on the section version in
vmstate_tally_counters since this version checked would not be the
section version (but the version defined in this structure). So, move
all the fields into the main state structure.

When processing MIPSnet I/O port write operation, it uses a
transmit buffer tx_buffer[MAX_ETH_FRAME_SIZE=1514]. Two indices
's->tx_written' and 's->tx_count' are used to control data written
to this buffer. If the two were to be equal before writing, it'd
lead to an OOB write access beyond tx_buffer. Add check to avoid it.

The Cadence GEM data sheet says:
"Wrap - marks last descriptor in transmit buffer descriptor list. This
can be set for any buffer within the frame."
which seems to imply that when the wrap bit is set so is the last bit.
Previously if the wrap bit is set, but the last is not then QEMU will

When writing to MMFR register, the MDIO device and adress are selected by
bit 27 to 23 and bit 22 to 18 respectively. This is a total of 10 bits
that need to be used by the Phy chip/address decoding function.
This patch fixes the number of bits used from 9 to 10.

According to the FEC chapter of i.MX25 reference manual
When writing the MMFR register, bit 29 and 28 select the requested operation.
* 10 means read operation with valid MII mgmt frame
* 11 means read operation with non compliant MII mgmt frame
* 01 means write operation with valid MII mgmt frame
* 00 means write operation with non compliant MII mgmt frame
So while bit 28 does change beween read/write for valid MII mgmt frame, the
mening is inverted for non compliant MII mgmt frame.
Bit 29 on the other hand means read/write whatever the type of mgmt frame
involved.
So this patch change the operation selection from bit 28 to bit 29 as it is
more generic.

This patch introduces emulation for the Intel 82574 adapter, AKA e1000e.
This implementation is derived from the e1000 emulation code, and
utilizes the TX/RX packet abstractions that were initially developed for
the vmxnet3 device. Although some parts of the introduced code may be
shared with e1000, the differences are substantial enough so that the
only shared resources for the two devices are the definitions in
hw/net/e1000_regs.h.
Similarly to vmxnet3, the new device uses virtio headers for task
offloads (for backends that support virtio extensions). Usage of
virtio headers may be forcibly disabled via a boolean device property
"vnet" (which is enabled by default). In such case task offloads
will be performed in software, in the same way it is done on
backends that do not support virtio headers.
The device code is split into two parts:
1. hw/net/e1000e.c: QEMU-specific code for a network device;
2. hw/net/e1000e_core.[hc]: Device emulation according to the spec.
The new device name is e1000e.
Intel specifications for the 82574 controller are available at:

The last 8 bytes of the receive buffer list page (that has been supplied
by the guest with the H_REGISTER_LOGICAL_LAN call) contain a counter
for frames that have been dropped because there was no suitable receive
buffer available. This patch introduces code to use this field to
provide the information about dropped rx packets to the guest.
There it can be queried with "ethtool -S eth0 | grep rx_no_buffer".

Signed-off-by: David Gibson <david@gibson.dropbear.id.au>
Currently, the spapr-vlan device is trying to flush the RX queue
after each RX buffer that has been added by the guest via the
H_ADD_LOGICAL_LAN_BUFFER hypercall. In case the receive buffer pool
was empty before, we only pass single packets to the guest this
way. This can cause very bad performance if a sender is trying
to stream fragmented UDP packets to the guest. For example when
using the UDP_STREAM test from netperf with UDP packets that are
much bigger than the MTU size, almost all UDP packets are dropped
in the guest since the chances are quite high that at least one of
the fragments got lost on the way.
When flushing the receive queue, it's much better if we'd have
a bunch of receive buffers available already, so that fragmented
packets can be passed to the guest in one go. To do this, the
spapr_vlan_receive() function should return 0 instead of -1 if there
are no more receive buffers available, so that receive_disabled = 1
gets temporarily set for the receive queue, and we have to delay
the queue flushing at the end of h_add_logical_lan_buffer() a little
bit by using a timer, so that the guest gets a chance to add multiple
RX buffers before we flush the queue again.
This improves the UDP_STREAM test with the spapr-vlan device a lot:
Running
netserver -p 44444 -L <guestip> -f -D -4
in the guest, and
netperf -p 44444 -L <hostip> -H <guestip> -t UDP_STREAM -l 60 -- -m 16384
in the host, I get the following values _without_ this patch:
Socket Message Elapsed Messages
Size Size Time Okay Errors Throughput
bytes bytes secs # # 10^6bits/sec
229376 16384 60.00 1738970 0 3798.83
229376 60.00 23 0.05
That "0.05" means that almost all UDP packets got lost/discarded
at the receiving side.
With this patch applied, the value look much better:

This patch introduces an upper bound for number of interrupts
per second. Without this bound an interrupt storm can occur as
it has been observed on Windows 10 when disabling the device.
According to the SPEC - Intel PCI/PCI-X Family of Gigabit
Ethernet Controllers Software Developer's Manual, section
13.4.18 - the Ethernet controller guarantees a maximum
observable interrupt rate of 7813 interrupts/sec. If there is
no upper bound this could lead to an interrupt storm by e1000
(when mit_delay < 500) causing interrupts to fire at a very high
pace.
Thus if mit_delay < 500 then the delay should be set to the
minimum delay possible which is 500. This can be calculated
easily as follows:
Interval = 10^9 / (7813 * 256) = 500.

tl;dr:
This patch introduces an alternate way of handling the receive
buffers of the spapr-vlan device, resulting in much better
receive performance for the guest.
Full story:
One of our testers recently discovered that the performance of the
spapr-vlan device is very poor compared to other NICs, and that
a simple "ping -i 0.2 -s 65507 someip" in the guest can result
in more than 50% lost ping packets (especially with older guest
kernels < 3.17).
After doing some analysis, it was clear that there is a problem
with the way we handle the receive buffers in spapr_llan.c: The
ibmveth driver of the guest Linux kernel tries to add a lot of
buffers into several buffer pools (with 512, 2048 and 65536 byte
sizes by default, but it can be changed via the entries in the
/sys/devices/vio/1000/pool* directories of the guest). However,
the spapr-vlan device of QEMU only tries to squeeze all receive
buffer descriptors into one single page which has been supplied
by the guest during the H_REGISTER_LOGICAL_LAN call, without
taking care of different buffer sizes. This has two bad effects:
First, only a very limited number of buffer descriptors is accepted
at all. Second, we also hand 64k buffers to the guest even if
the 2k buffers would fit better - and this results in dropped packets
in the IP layer of the guest since too much skbuf memory is used.
Though it seems at a first glance like PAPR says that we should store
the receive buffer descriptors in the page that is supplied during
the H_REGISTER_LOGICAL_LAN call, chapter 16.4.1.2 in the LoPAPR spec
declares that "the contents of these descriptors are architecturally
opaque, none of these descriptors are manipulated by code above
the architected interfaces". That means we don't have to store
the RX buffer descriptors in this page, but can also manage the
receive buffers at the hypervisor level only. This is now what we
are doing here: Introducing proper RX buffer pools which are also
sorted by size of the buffers, so we can hand out a buffer with
the best fitting size when a packet has been received.
To avoid problems with migration from/to older version of QEMU,
the old behavior is also retained and enabled by default. The new
buffer management has to be enabled via a new "use-rx-buffer-pools"
property.
Now with the new buffer pool management enabled, the problem with
"ping -s 65507" is fixed for me, and the throughput of a simple
test with wget increases from creeping 3MB/s up to 20MB/s!

This patch replaces get_ticks_per_sec() calls with the macro
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND. Also, as there are no callers, get_ticks_per_sec()
is then removed. This replacement improves the readability and
understandability of code.
For example,
timer_mod(fdctrl->result_timer,
qemu_clock_get_ns(QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL) + (get_ticks_per_sec() / 50));
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND makes it obvious that qemu_clock_get_ns
matches the unit of the expression on the right side of the plus.

Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.
Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.
Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.
This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

When running a fully emulated device in cross-endian conditions, including
a virtio 1.0 device offered to a big endian guest, we need to fix the vnet
headers. This is currently handled by the virtio_net_hdr_swap() function
in the core virtio-net code but it should actually be handled by the net
backend.
With this patch, virtio-net now tries to configure the backend to do the
endian fixing when the device starts (i.e. drivers sets the CONFIG_OK bit).
If the backend cannot support the requested endiannes, we have to fallback
onto virtio_net_hdr_swap(): this is recorded in the needs_vnet_hdr_swap flag,
to be used in the TX and RX paths.
Note that we reset the backend to the default behaviour (guest native
endianness) when the device stops (i.e. device status had CONFIG_OK bit and
driver unsets it). This is needed, with the linux tap backend at least,
otherwise the guest may lose network connectivity if rebooted into a
different endianness.
The current vhost-net code also tries to configure net backends. This will
be no more needed and will be reverted in a subsequent patch.

JSON uses "name":value, but many of our visitor interfaces were
called with visit_type_FOO(v, &value, name, errp). This can be
a bit confusing to have to mentally swap the parameter order to
match JSON order. It's particularly bad for visit_start_struct(),
where the 'name' parameter is smack in the middle of the
otherwise-related group of 'obj, kind, size' parameters! It's
time to do a global swap of the parameter ordering, so that the
'name' parameter is always immediately after the Visitor argument.
Additional reason in favor of the swap: the existing include/qjson.h
prefers listing 'name' first in json_prop_*(), and I have plans to
unify that file with the qapi visitors; listing 'name' first in
qapi will minimize churn to the (admittedly few) qjson.h clients.
Later patches will then fix docs, object.h, visitor-impl.h, and
those clients to match.
Done by first patching scripts/qapi*.py by hand to make generated
files do what I want, then by running the following Coccinelle
script to affect the rest of the code base:
$ spatch --sp-file script `git grep -l '\bvisit_' -- '**/*.[ch]'`
I then had to apply some touchups (Coccinelle insisted on TAB
indentation in visitor.h, and botched the signature of
visit_type_enum() by rewriting 'const char *const strings[]' to
the syntactically invalid 'const char*const[] strings'). The
movement of parameters is sufficient to provoke compiler errors
if any callers were missed.

errors or 0. We can thus easily move allocation inside the functions
and just return a pointer to the VirtQueueElement.
The advantage is that we will be able to allocate only the space that
is needed for the actual size of the s/g list instead of the full
VIRTQUEUE_MAX_SIZE items. Currently VirtQueueElement takes about 48K
of memory, and this kind of allocation puts a lot of stress on malloc.
By cutting the size by two or three orders of magnitude, malloc can
use much more efficient algorithms.
The patch is pretty large, but changes to each device are testable
more or less independently. Splitting it would mostly add churn.

The start_xmit() and e1000_receive_iov() functions implement DMA transfers
iterating over a set of descriptors that the guest's e1000 driver
prepares:
- the TDLEN and RDLEN registers store the total size of the descriptor
area,
- while the TDH and RDH registers store the offset (in whole tx / rx
descriptors) into the area where the transfer is supposed to start.
Each time a descriptor is processed, the TDH and RDH register is bumped
(as appropriate for the transfer direction).
QEMU already contains logic to deal with bogus transfers submitted by the
guest:
- Normally, the transmit case wants to increase TDH from its initial value
to TDT. (TDT is allowed to be numerically smaller than the initial TDH
value; wrapping at or above TDLEN bytes to zero is normal.) The failsafe
that QEMU currently has here is a check against reaching the original
TDH value again -- a complete wraparound, which should never happen.
- In the receive case RDH is increased from its initial value until
"total_size" bytes have been received; preferably in a single step, or
in "s->rxbuf_size" byte steps, if the latter is smaller. However, null
RX descriptors are skipped without receiving data, while RDH is
incremented just the same. QEMU tries to prevent an infinite loop
(processing only null RX descriptors) by detecting whether RDH assumes
its original value during the loop. (Again, wrapping from RDLEN to 0 is
normal.)
What both directions miss is that the guest could program TDLEN and RDLEN
so low, and the initial TDH and RDH so high, that these registers will
immediately be truncated to zero, and then never reassume their initial
values in the loop -- a full wraparound will never occur.
The condition that expresses this is:
xdh_start >= s->mac_reg[XDLEN] / sizeof(desc)
i.e., TDH or RDH start out after the last whole rx or tx descriptor that
fits into the TDLEN or RDLEN sized area.
This condition could be checked before we enter the loops, but
pci_dma_read() / pci_dma_write() knows how to fill in buffers safely for
bogus DMA addresses, so we just extend the existing failsafes with the
above condition.
This is CVE-2016-1981.

In Xen 4.7 we are refactoring parts libxenctrl into a number of
separate libraries which will provide backward and forward API and ABI
compatiblity.
One such library will be libxengnttab which provides access to grant
tables.
In preparation for this switch the compatibility layer in xen_common.h
(which support building with older versions of Xen) to use what will
be the new library API. This means that the gnttab shim will disappear
for versions of Xen which include libxengnttab.
To simplify things for the <= 4.0.0 support we wrap the int fd in a
malloc(sizeof int) such that the handle is always a pointer. This
leads to less typedef headaches and the need for
XC_HANDLER_INITIAL_VALUE etc for these interfaces.
Note that this patch does not add any support for actually using
libxengnttab, it just adjusts the existing shims.

e1000 driver in Win2k12 is really well rotten. It 100% hangs on shutdown
of UP VM under flood ping. The guest checks card state and reinjects
itself interrupt in a loop. This is fatal for UP machine.
There is no good way to fix this misbehavior but to kludge it. The
emulation has interrupt throttling register aka ITR which limits
interrupt rate and allows the guest to proceed this phase.
There is no problem with this kludge for Linux guests - it adjust the
value of it itself.

This follows the previous patches, where support for migrating the
entire MAC registers' array, and some new MAC registers were introduced.
This patch introduces the e1000-specific boolean parameter
"extra_mac_registers", which is on by default. Setting it to off will
enable migration to older versions of QEMU, but will disable the read
and write access to the new registers, that were introduced since adding
the ability to migrate the entire MAC array.
Example for usage to enable backward compatibility and to disable the
new MAC registers:
qemu-system-x86_64 -device e1000,extra_mac_registers=off,... ...
As mentioned above, the default value is "on".

Previously, these 64-bit registers did not stick at their maximal
values when (and if) they reached them, as they should do, according to
the specs.
This patch introduces a function that takes care of such registers,
avoiding code duplication, making the relevant parts more compatible
with the QEMU coding style, while ensuring that in the unlikely case
of reaching the maximal value, the counter will stick there, as it
supposed to.

These registers appear in Intel's specs, but were not implemented.
These registers are now implemented trivially, i.e. they are initiated
with zero values, and if they are RW, they can be written or read by the
driver, or read only if they are R (essentially retaining their zero
values). For these registers no other procedures are performed.
For the trivially implemented Diagnostic registers, a debug warning is
produced on read/write attempts.

The array of uint8_t's which is introduced here, contains access metadata
about the MAC registers: if a register is accessible, but partly implemented,
or if a register requires a certain compatibility flag in order to be
accessed. Currently, 6 hypothetical flags are supported (3 exist for e1000
so far) but in the future, if more than 6 flags will be needed, the datatype
of this array can simply be swapped for a larger one.
This patch is intended to solve the following current problems:
1) In a scenario of migration between different versions of QEMU, which
differ by the MAC registers implemented in them, some registers need not to
be active if a compatibility flag is set, in order to preserve the machine's
state perfectly for the older version. Checking this for each register
individually, would create a lot of clutter in the code.
2) Some registers are (or may be) only partly implemented (e.g.
placeholders that allow reading and writing, but lack other functions).
In such cases it is better to print a debug warning on read/write attempts.
As above, dealing with this functionality on a per-register level, would
require longer and more messy code.

This patch makes the migration of the entire array of MAC registers
possible during live migration. The entire array is just 128 KB long, so
practically no penalty should be felt when transmitting it, additionally
to the previously transmitted individual registers. The advantage here is
eliminating the need to introduce new vmstate subsections in the future,
when additional MAC registers will be implemented.
Backward compatibility is preserved by introducing a e1000-specific
boolean parameter (in a later patch), which will be on by default.
Setting it to off would enable migration to older versions of QEMU.
Additionally, this parameter will be used to control the access to the
extra MAC registers in the future.

A new vhost user message is added to allow QEMU to ask to vhost user backend to
broadcast a fake RARP after live migration for guest without GUEST_ANNOUNCE
capability.
This new message is sent only if the backend supports the new
VHOST_USER_PROTOCOL_F_RARP protocol feature.
The payload of this new message is the MAC address of the guest (not known by
the backend). The MAC address is copied in the first 6 bytes of a u64 to avoid
to create a new payload message type.
This new message has no equivalent ioctl so a new callback is added in the
userOps structure to send the request.

1. Add the VIRTIO_NET_F_GUEST_ANNOUNCE capability to vhost-net when netdev

2. Provide a nop receive callback to vhost-user.
This callback is called by:
* qemu_announce_self after a migration to send fake RARP to avoid network
outage for peers talking to the migrated guest.
- For guest with GUEST_ANNOUNCE capabilities, guest already sends GARP

=> These packets must be discarded.
- For guest without GUEST_ANNOUNCE capabilities, migration termination
is notified when the guest sends packets.

g_new(T, n) is neater than g_malloc(sizeof(T) * n). It's also safer,

Two, it returns T * rather than void *, which lets the compiler catch

y is used as nanoseconds in timer functions,

This patch is initially based a patch from Nikolay Nikolaev.
This patch adds vhost-user multiple queue support, by creating a nc
and vhost_net pair for each queue.
Qemu exits if find that the backend can't support the number of requested
queues (by providing queues=# option). The max number is queried by a
new message, VHOST_USER_GET_QUEUE_NUM, and is sent only when protocol
feature VHOST_USER_PROTOCOL_F_MQ is present first.
The max queue check is done at vhost-user initiation stage. We initiate
one queue first, which, in the meantime, also gets the max_queues the
backend supports.
In older version, it was reported that some messages are sent more times
than necessary. Here we came an agreement with Michael that we could
categorize vhost user messages to 2 types: non-vring specific messages,
which should be sent only once, and vring specific messages, which should
be sent per queue.
Here I introduced a helper function vhost_user_one_time_request(), which
lists following messages as non-vring specific messages:
VHOST_USER_SET_OWNER
VHOST_USER_RESET_DEVICE
VHOST_USER_SET_MEM_TABLE
VHOST_USER_GET_QUEUE_NUM
For above messages, we simply ignore them when they are not sent the first
time.

Unexpected error in ram_block_add() at /work/armbru/qemu/exec.c:1456:
upstream-qemu: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory
Aborted (core dumped)
Root cause: commit ef701d7 screwed up handling of out-of-memory
conditions. Before the commit, we report the error and exit(1), in
one place, ram_block_add(). The commit lifts the error handling up
the call chain some, to three places. Fine. Except it uses
&error_abort in these places, changing the behavior from exit(1) to
abort(), and thus undoing the work of commit 3922825 "exec: Don't
abort when we can't allocate guest memory".
The three places are:
* memory_region_init_ram()
Commit 4994653 (right after commit ef701d7) lifted the error
handling further, through memory_region_init_ram(), multiplying the
incorrect use of &error_abort. Later on, imitation of existing
(bad) code may have created more.
* memory_region_init_ram_ptr()
The &error_abort is still there.
* memory_region_init_rom_device()
Doesn't need fixing, because commit 33e0eb5 (soon after commit
ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, and in the process
changed it from &error_abort to passing it up the call chain.
Correct, because the callers are realize() methods.
Fix the error handling after memory_region_init_ram() with a
Coccinelle semantic patch:
@r@
expression mr, owner, name, size, err;
position p;
@@
memory_region_init_ram(mr, owner, name, size,
(
- &error_abort
+ &error_fatal
|
err@p
)
);
@script:python@
p << r.p;
@@
print "%s:%s:%s" % (p[0].file, p[0].line, p[0].column)
When the last argument is &error_abort, it gets replaced by
&error_fatal. This is the fix.
If the last argument is anything else, its position is reported. This
lets us check the fix is complete. Four positions get reported:
* ram_backend_memory_alloc()
Error is passed up the call chain, ultimately through
user_creatable_complete(). As far as I can tell, it's callers all
handle the error sanely.
* fsl_imx25_realize(), fsl_imx31_realize(), dp8393x_realize()
DeviceClass.realize() methods, errors handled sanely further up the
call chain.
We're good. Test case again behaves:

Return false from can_receive() when the FIFO doesn't have a free RX
slot. This fixes a bug in the current code where the allocated buffer
is freed before the fifo pop, triggering a premature flush of queued RX
packets. It also will handle a corner case, where the guest manually
frees the allocated buffer before popping the rx FIFO (hence it is not
enough to just delay the flush_queued_packets()).

Check that the core can once again receive packets before asking the
net layer to do a flush. This will make it more convenient to flush
packets when adding new conditions to can_receive.

ne2000_receive already checks the same conditions and drops the packet
if it's not ready, removing the .can_receive callback avoids the
necessity to add explicit flushes when the conditions turn true (which
is required by the new semantics of .can_receive since 6e99c63
"net/socket: Drop net_socket_can_send").

rtl8139_do_receive() tries to check for the overflow condition
by making sure that packet_size + 8 does not exceed the
available buffer space. The issue here is that RxBuffAddr,
used to calculate available buffer space, is aligned to a
a 4 byte boundry after every update. So it is possible that
every packet ends up being slightly padded when written
to the receive buffer. This padding is not taken into
account when checking for overflow and we may end up missing
the overflow condition can causing buffer overwrite.
This patch takes alignment into consideration when
checking for overflow condition.
