Waiting until the end of the convert operation (a potentially
time-consuming task) to finally detect that we can't copy a bitmap is
bad, comparing to failing fast up front. Furthermore, this prevents
us from leaving a file behind with a bitmap that is not marked as
inconsistent even though it does not have sane contents.
This fixes the problems exposed in the previous patch to the iotest:
it adds a fast failure up front, and even if we don't fail early, it
ensures that any bitmap we add but do not properly populate is removed
again rather than left behind incomplete.

The recently-added NBD context qemu:allocation-depth is able to
distinguish between locally-present data (even when that data is
sparse) [shown as depth 1 over NBD], and data that could not be found
anywhere in the backing chain [shown as depth 0]; and the libnbd
project was recently patched to give the human-readable name "absent"
to an allocation-depth of 0. But qemu-img map --output=json predates
that addition, and has the unfortunate behavior that all portions of
the backing chain that resolve without finding a hit in any backing
layer report the same depth as the final backing layer. This makes it
harder to reconstruct a qcow2 backing chain using just 'qemu-img map'
output, especially when using "backing":null to artificially limit a
backing chain, because it is impossible to distinguish between a
QCOW2_CLUSTER_UNALLOCATED (which defers to a [missing] backing file)
and a QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_PLAIN cluster (which would override any
backing file), since both types of clusters otherwise show as
"data":false,"zero":true" (but note that we can distinguish a
QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_ALLOCATED, which would also have an "offset":
listing).
The task of reconstructing a qcow2 chain was made harder in commit
0da9856851 (nbd: server: Report holes for raw images), because prior
to that point, it was possible to abuse NBD's block status command to
see which portions of a qcow2 file resulted in BDRV_BLOCK_ALLOCATED
(showing up as NBD_STATE_ZERO in isolation) vs. missing from the chain
(showing up as NBD_STATE_ZERO|NBD_STATE_HOLE); but now qemu reports
more accurate sparseness information over NBD.
An obvious solution is to make 'qemu-img map --output=json' add an
additional "present":false designation to any cluster lacking an
allocation anywhere in the chain, without any change to the "depth"
parameter to avoid breaking existing clients. The iotests have
several examples where this distinction demonstrates the additional
accuracy.

Without the allow_other mount option, no user (not even root) but the
one who started qemu/the storage daemon can access the export. Allow
users to configure the export such that such accesses are possible.
While allow_other is probably what users want, we cannot make it an
unconditional default, because passing it is only possible (for non-root
users) if the global fuse.conf configuration file allows it. Thus, the
default is an 'auto' mode, in which we first try with allow_other, and
then fall back to without.
FuseExport.allow_other reports whether allow_other was actually used as
a mount option or not. Currently, this information is not used, but a
future patch will let this field decide whether e.g. an export's UID and
GID can be changed through chmod.
One notable thing about 'auto' mode is that libfuse may print error
messages directly to stderr, and so may fusermount (which it executes).
Our export code cannot really filter or hide them. Therefore, if 'auto'
fails its first attempt and has to fall back, fusermount will print an
error message that mounting with allow_other failed.
This behavior necessitates a change to iotest 308, namely we need to
filter out this error message (because if the first attempt at mounting
with allow_other succeeds, there will be no such message).
Furthermore, common.rc's _make_test_img should use allow-other=off for
FUSE exports, because iotests generally do not need to access images
from other users, so allow-other=on or allow-other=auto have no
advantage. OTOH, allow-other=on will not work on systems where
user_allow_other is disabled, and with allow-other=auto, we get said
error message that we would need to filter out again. Just disabling
allow-other is simplest.

We do not do any permission checks in fuse_open(), so let the kernel do
them. We already let fuse_getattr() report the proper UNIX permissions,
so this should work the way we want.
This causes a change in 308's reference output, because now opening a
non-writable export with O_RDWR fails already, instead of only actually
attempting to write to it. (That is an improvement.)

If it is off, any backend information will be discarded, which is
suitable if you plan to perform live migration to a different disk backend.
If it is on, a block device may utilize backend information more
aggressively.

When creating an image file with a backing file, we generally try to
open the backing file (unless -u was specified), mostly to verify that
it is there, but also to get the file size if none was specified for the
new image.
For neither of these things do we need data I/O, and so we can pass
BDRV_O_NO_IO when opening the backing file. This allows us to open even
encrypted backing images without requiring the user to provide a secret.
This makes the -u switch in iotests 189 and 198 unnecessary (and the
$size parameter), so drop it, because this way we get regression tests
for this patch here.

mypy is kind of weird about how it handles imports. For legacy reasons,
it won't load PEP 420 namespaces, because of logic implemented prior to
that becoming a standard.
So, if you plan on using any, you have to pass

Each instance of qemu.machine.QEMUMachine currently has a "test
directory", which may not have any relation to a "test", and it's
really a temporary directory.
Users instantiating the QEMUMachine class will be able to set the
location of the directory that will *contain* the QEMUMachine unique
temporary directory, so that parameter name has been changed from
test_dir to base_temp_dir.
A property has been added to allow users to access it without using
private attributes, and with that, the directory is created on first
use of the property.

Right now there is no easy way for "check" to print a reproducer command.
Because such a reproducer command line would be huge, we can instead teach
check to start a command of our choice. This can be for example a Python

Move the trailing empty line to print_env(), since it always looks better

Python test scripts that use unittest consist of multiple tests.
unittest.main allows selecting which tests to run, but currently this
is not possible because the iotests wrapper ignores sys.argv.
unittest.main command line options also allow the user to pick the
desired options for verbosity, failfast mode, etc. While "-d" is
currently translated to "-v", it also enables extra debug output,
and other options are not available at all.
These command line options only work if the unittest.main testRunner
argument is a type, rather than a TestRunner instance. Therefore, pass
the class name and "verbosity" argument to unittest.main, and adjust for
the different default warnings between TextTestRunner and unittest.main.

Sometimes the parser needs to further split a token it has collected
from the token input stream. Right now, it does a cursory check to see
if the relevant characters appear in the token to determine if it should
break it down further.
However, qemu_rbd_next_tok() will escape characters as it removes tokens
from the token stream and plain strchr() won't. This can make the
initial strchr() check slightly misleading since it implies
qemu_rbd_next_tok() will find the token and split on it, except the
reality is that qemu_rbd_next_tok() will pass over it if it is escaped.
Use a custom strchr to avoid mixing escaped and unescaped string
operations. Furthermore, this code is identical to how
qemu_rbd_next_tok() seeks its next token, so incorporate this custom
strchr into the body of that function to reduce duplication.

Split out no-perm part of bdrv_root_attach_child() into separate
transaction action. bdrv_root_attach_child() now moves to new

Rewrite bdrv_check_perm(), bdrv_abort_perm_update() and bdrv_set_perm()
to update nodes in topological sort order instead of simple DFS. With
topologically sorted nodes, we update a node only when all its parents
already updated. With DFS it's not so.
Consider the following example:
A -+
| |
| v
| B
| |
v |
C<-+
A is parent for B and C, B is parent for C.
Obviously, to update permissions, we should go in order A B C, so, when
we update C, all parent permissions already updated. But with current
approach (simple recursion) we can update in sequence A C B C (C is
updated twice). On first update of C, we consider old B permissions, so
doing wrong thing. If it succeed, all is OK, on second C update we will
finish with correct graph. But if the wrong thing failed, we break the
whole process for no reason (it's possible that updated B permission
will be less strict, but we will never check it).
Also new approach gives a way to simultaneously and correctly update
several nodes, we just need to run bdrv_topological_dfs() several times
to add all nodes and their subtrees into one topologically sorted list
(next patch will update bdrv_replace_node() in this manner).
Test test_parallel_perm_update() is now passing, so move it out of
debugging "if".
We also need to support ignore_children in
bdrv_parent_perms_conflict()
For test 283 order of conflicting parents check is changed.
Note also that in bdrv_check_perm() we don't check for parents conflict
at root bs, as we may be in the middle of permission update in
bdrv_reopen_multiple(). bdrv_reopen_multiple() will be updated soon.

Three test cases:
(1) Adding a qcow2 (metadata) file to an existing data file, see whether
we can read the existing data through the qcow2 image.
(2) Append data to the data file, grow the qcow2 image accordingly, see
whether we can read the new data through the qcow2 image.
(3) At runtime, add a backing image to a freshly created qcow2 image
with an external data file (with data-file-raw). Reading data from
the qcow2 image must return the same result as reading data from the
data file, so everything in the backing image must be ignored.
(This did not use to be the case, because without the L2 tables

qcow2 driver would fall through to the backing file.)

Setting the qcow2 data-file-raw bit means that you can ignore the
qcow2 metadata when reading from the external data file. It does not
mean that you have to ignore it, though. Therefore, the data read must
be the same regardless of whether you interpret the metadata or whether
you ignore it, and thus the L1/L2 tables must all be present and give a
1:1 mapping.
This patch changes 244's output: First, the qcow2 file is larger right
after creation, because of metadata preallocation. Second, the qemu-img
map output changes: Everything that was not explicitly discarded or
zeroed is now a data area.

We have multiple clients of qemu_strtosz (qemu-io, the opts visitor,
the keyval visitor), and it gets annoying that edge-case testing is
impacted by implicit rounding to 53 bits of precision due to parsing
with strtod(). As an example posted by Rich Jones:
$ nbdkit memory $(( 2**63 - 2**30 )) --run \
'build/qemu-io -f raw "$uri" -c "w -P 3 $(( 2**63 - 2**30 - 512 )) 512" '
write failed: Input/output error
because 9223372035781033472 got rounded to 0x7fffffffc0000000 which is
out of bounds.
It is also worth noting that our existing parser, by virtue of using
strtod(), accepts decimal AND hex numbers, even though test-cutils
previously lacked any coverage of the latter until the previous patch.
We do have existing clients that expect a hex parse to work (for
example, iotest 33 using qemu-io -c "write -P 0xa 0x200 0x400"), but
strtod() parses "08" as 8 rather than as an invalid octal number, so
we know there are no clients that depend on octal. Our use of
strtod() also means that "0x1.8k" would actually parse as 1536 (the
fraction is 8/16), rather than 1843 (if the fraction were 8/10); but
as this was not covered in the testsuite, I have no qualms forbidding
hex fractions as invalid, so this patch declares that the use of
fractions is only supported with decimal input, and enhances the
testsuite to document that.
Our previous use of strtod() meant that -1 parsed as a negative; now
that we parse with strtoull(), negative values can wrap around modulo
2^64, so we have to explicitly check whether the user passed in a '-';
and make it consistent to also reject '-0'. This has the minor effect
of treating negative values as EINVAL (with no change to endptr)
rather than ERANGE (with endptr advanced to what was parsed), visible
in the updated iotest output.
We also had no testsuite coverage of "1.1e0k", which happened to parse
under strtod() but is unlikely to occur in practice; as long as we are
making things more robust, it is easy enough to reject the use of
exponents in a strtod parse.
The fix is done by breaking the parse into an integer prefix (no loss
in precision), rejecting negative values (since we can no longer rely
on strtod() to do that), determining if a decimal or hexadecimal parse
was intended (with the new restriction that a fractional hex parse is
not allowed), and where appropriate, using a floating point fractional
parse (where we also scan to reject use of exponents in the fraction).
The bulk of the patch is then updates to the testsuite to match our
new precision, as well as adding new cases we reject (whether they
were rejected or inadvertently accepted before).

When querying image extents for raw image, qemu-nbd reports holes as
zero:
$ qemu-nbd -t -r -f raw empty-6g.raw
$ qemu-img map --output json nbd://localhost
[{ "start": 0, "length": 6442450944, "depth": 0, "zero": true, "data": true, "offset": 0}]
$ qemu-img map --output json empty-6g.raw
[{ "start": 0, "length": 6442450944, "depth": 0, "zero": true, "data": false, "offset": 0}]
Turns out that qemu-img map reports a hole based on BDRV_BLOCK_DATA, but
nbd server reports a hole based on BDRV_BLOCK_ALLOCATED.
The NBD protocol says:
NBD_STATE_HOLE (bit 0): if set, the block represents a hole (and
future writes to that area may cause fragmentation or encounter an
NBD_ENOSPC error); if clear, the block is allocated or the server
could not otherwise determine its status.
qemu-img manual says:
whether the sectors contain actual data or not (boolean field data;
if false, the sectors are either unallocated or stored as
optimized all-zero clusters);
To me, data=false looks compatible with NBD_STATE_HOLE. From user point
of view, getting same results from qemu-nbd and qemu-img is more
important than being more correct about allocation status.
Changing nbd server to report holes using BDRV_BLOCK_DATA makes qemu-nbd
results compatible with qemu-img map:
$ qemu-img map --output json nbd://localhost
[{ "start": 0, "length": 6442450944, "depth": 0, "zero": true, "data": false, "offset": 0}]

Some error messages contain ambiguous representations of the 'node-name'

messages (C = client, S = server):
C: {"execute": "block_resize", "arguments": { "device": "my_file", "size": 26843545600 }}
S: {"error": {"class": "GenericError", "desc": "Cannot find device=my_file nor node_name="}}
^^^^^^^^^
This error message suggests one could send a message with a key called
'node_name':
C: {"execute": "block_resize", "arguments": { "node_name": "my_file", "size": 26843545600 }}
^^^^^^^^^
but using the underscore is actually incorrect, the parameter should be
'node-name':
S: {"error": {"class": "GenericError", "desc": "Parameter 'node_name' is unexpected"}}
This behavior was uncovered in bz1651437, but I ended up going down a
rabbit hole looking for other areas where this miscommunication might
occur and changing those accordingly as well.

Without any of HEAD^ or HEAD^^ applied, qemu will most likely crash on
the qemu-io invocation, for a variety of immediate reasons. The
underlying problem is generally a use-after-free access into
backup-top's BlockCopyState.
With only HEAD^ applied, qemu-io will run into an EIO (which is not
capture by the output, but you can see that the qemu-io invocation will
be accepted (i.e., qemu-io will run) in contrast to the reference
output, where the node name cannot be found), and qemu will then crash
in query-named-block-nodes: bdrv_get_allocated_file_size() detects
backup-top to be a filter and passes the request through to its child.
However, after bdrv_backup_top_drop(), that child is NULL, so the
recursive call crashes.
With HEAD^^ applied, this test should pass.

To disallow certain refcount_bits values, some _unsupported_imgopts
invocations look like "refcount_bits=1[^0-9]", i.e. they match an
integer boundary with [^0-9]. This expression does not match the end of
the string, though, so it breaks down when refcount_bits is the last
option (which it tends to be after the rewrite of the check script in
Python).
Those invocations could use \b or \> instead, but those are not
portable. They could use something like \([^0-9]\|$\), but that would
be cumbersome. To make it simple and keep the existing invocations
working, just let _unsupported_imgopts match the regex against $IMGOPTS
plus a trailing space.

When using the _launch_qemu and _send_qemu_cmd functions from
common.qemu, any QMP events get mixed in with the output from
the commands and responses.
This makes it difficult to write a test case as the ordering
of events in the output is not stable.
This introduces a variable 'capture_events' which can be set
to a list of event names. Any events listed in this variable
will not be printed, instead collected in the $QEMU_EVENTS
environment variable.
A new '_wait_event' function can be invoked to collect events
at a fixed point in time. The function will first pull events
cached in $QEMU_EVENTS variable, and if none are found, will
then read more from QMP.

The bdrv_all_*_snapshot functions return a BlockDriverState pointer
for the invalid backend, which the callers then use to report an
error message. In some cases multiple callers are reporting the
same error message, but with slightly different text. In the future
there will be more error scenarios for some of these methods, which
will benefit from fine grained error message reporting. So it is
helpful to push error reporting down a level.

testrunner.py prints the normal output when starting a test even for
-makecheck. This output contains '\r' at the end so that it can be
overwritten with the result at the end of the test. However, for
-makecheck this is shorter output in a different format, so effectively
we end up with garbled output that mixes both output forms.

Just use classes introduced in previous three commits. Behavior
difference is described in these three commits.
Drop group file, as it becomes unused.
Drop common.env: now check is in python, and for tests we use same
python interpreter that runs the check itself. Use build environment
PYTHON in check-block instead, to keep "make check" use the same
python.
Checking for virtio-blk moved to iotests.py, as it actually iotests.py
dependency. Actually not all python iotests depend on it, so in future
it may be refactored to checked only when really needed.

Add TestRunner class, which will run tests in a new python iotests
running framework.
There are some differences with current ./check behavior, most
significant are:
- Consider all tests self-executable, just run them, don't run python
by hand.
- Elapsed time is cached in json file
- Elapsed time precision increased a bit
- Instead of using "diff -w" which ignores all whitespace differences,
manually strip whitespace at line end then use python difflib, which
no longer ignores spacing mid-line

Add python script with new logic of searching for tests:
Current ./check behavior:
- tests are named [0-9][0-9][0-9]
- tests must be registered in group file (even if test doesn't belong
to any group, like 142)
Behavior of findtests.py:
- group file is dropped
- tests are all files in tests/ subdirectory (except for .out files),
so it's not needed more to "register the test", just create it with
appropriate name in tests/ subdirectory. Old names like
[0-9][0-9][0-9] (in root iotests directory) are supported too, but
not recommended for new tests
- groups are parsed from '# group: ' line inside test files
- optional file group.local may be used to define some additional
groups for downstreams
- 'disabled' group is used to temporary disable tests. So instead of
commenting tests in old 'group' file you now can add them to
disabled group with help of 'group.local' file
- selecting test ranges like 5-15 are not supported more
(to support restarting failed ./check command from the middle of the
process, new argument is added: --start-from)
Benefits:
- no rebase conflicts in group file on patch porting from branch to
branch
- no conflicts in upstream, when different series want to occupy same
test number
- meaningful names for test files
For example, with digital number, when some person wants to add some
test about block-stream, he most probably will just create a new
test. But if there would be test-block-stream test already, he will
at first look at it and may be just add a test-case into it.
And anyway meaningful names are better.
This commit doesn't update check behavior (which will be done in
further commit), still, the documentation changed like new behavior is
already here. Let's live with this small inconsistency for the
following few commits, until final change.

185 test however assumes, that with speed limited to 64K, one iteration

So, let's explicitly specify, what test wants: set max-chunk to 64K, so

It will be used in backup, when moved on async block-copy.
Note, that job_user_pause is not enough: we want to handle
child_job_drained_begin() as well, which call job_pause().
Still, if job is already in job_do_yield() in job_pause_point() we
should not enter it.

Issuing 'stop' on the VM drains all nodes. If the mirror job has many
large requests in flight, this may lead to significant I/O that looks a
bit like 'stop' would make the job try to complete (which is what 129
should verify not to happen).
We can limit the I/O in flight by limiting the buffer size, so mirror
will make very little progress during the 'stop' drain.
(We do not need to do anything about commit, which has a buffer size of
512 kB by default; or backup, which goes cluster by cluster. Once we
have asynchronous requests for backup, that will change, but then we can
fine-tune the backup job to only perform a single request on a very
small chunk, too.)

Instead of checking iotests.py only, check all Python files in the
qemu-iotests/ directory. Of course, most of them do not pass, so there
is an extensive skip list for now. (The only files that do pass are
209, 254, 283, and iotests.py.)
(Alternatively, we could have the opposite, i.e. an explicit list of
files that we do want to check, but I think it is better to check files
by default.)
Unless started in debug mode (./check -d), the output has no information
on which files are tested, so we will not have a problem e.g. with
backports, where some files may be missing when compared to upstream.
Besides the technical rewrite, some more things are changed:
- For the pylint invocation, PYTHONPATH is adjusted. This mirrors
setting MYPYPATH for mypy.
- Also, MYPYPATH is now derived from PYTHONPATH, so that we include
paths set by the environment. Maybe at some point we want to let the
check script add '../../python/' to PYTHONPATH so that iotests.py does
not need to do that.
- Passing --notes=FIXME,XXX to pylint suppresses warnings for TODO
comments. TODO is fine, we do not need 297 to complain about such
comments.
- The "Success" line from mypy's output is suppressed, because (A) it
does not add useful information, and (B) it would leak information
about the files having been tested to the reference output, which we
decidedly do not want.

and expected to be set by the ./check script (as evidenced by
execute_setup_common(), which checks for test_dir and
qemu_default_machine to be set, and aborts if they are not).
Using .get() this way has the disadvantage of returning an Optional[str]
type, which mypy will complain about when tests just assume these values
to be str.
Use [] instead, which raises a KeyError for environment variables that
are not set. When this exception is raised, catch it and move the abort
code from execute_setup_common() there.

If you run './check 277', check includes common.config which adjusts
$PATH to include '.' first, and therefore finds nbd-fault-injector.py

fails because the executable is not found. Adjust how we invoke the

With bash 5.1, the output of the following script changes:
a=("double space")
a=${a[@]:0:1}
echo "$a"
from "double space" to "double space", i.e. all white space is
preserved as-is. This is probably what we actually want here (judging
from the "...to accommodate pathnames with spaces" comment), but before
5.1, we would have to quote the ${} slice to get the same behavior.
In any case, without quoting, the reference output of many iotests is
different between bash 5.1 and pre-5.1, which is not very good. The
output of 5.1 is what we want, so whatever we do to get pre-5.1 to the
same result, it means we have to fix the reference output of basically
all tests that invoke _send_qemu_cmd (except the ones that only use
single spaces in the commands they invoke).
Instead of quoting the ${} slice (cmd="${$@: 1:...}"), we can also just
not use array slicing and replace the whole thing with a simple "cmd=$1;
shift", which works because all callers quote the whole $cmd argument
anyway.

The quorum driver does not implement bdrv_co_block_status() and
because of that it always reports to contain data even if all its
children are known to be empty.
One consequence of this is that if we for example create a quorum with
a size of 10GB and we mirror it to a new image the operation will
write 10GB of actual zeroes to the destination image wasting a lot of
time and disk space.
Since a quorum has an arbitrary number of children of potentially
different formats there is no way to report all possible allocation
status flags in a way that makes sense, so this implementation only
reports when a given region is known to contain zeroes
(BDRV_BLOCK_ZERO) or not (BDRV_BLOCK_DATA).
If all children agree that a region contains zeroes then we can return
BDRV_BLOCK_ZERO using the smallest size reported by the children
(because all agree that a region of at least that size contains
zeroes).
If at least one child disagrees we have to return BDRV_BLOCK_DATA.
In this case we use the largest of the sizes reported by the children
that didn't return BDRV_BLOCK_ZERO (because we know that there won't
be an agreement for at least that size).

We are going to modify block layer to work with 64bit requests. And
first step is moving to int64_t type for both offset and bytes
arguments in all block request related functions.
It's mostly safe (when widening signed or unsigned int to int64_t), but
switching from uint64_t is questionable.
So, let's first establish the set of requests we want to work with.
First signed int64_t should be enough, as off_t is signed anyway. Then,
obviously offset + bytes should not overflow.
And most interesting: (offset + bytes) being aligned up should not
overflow as well. Aligned to what alignment? First thing that comes in
mind is bs->bl.request_alignment, as we align up request to this
alignment. But there is another thing: look at
bdrv_mark_request_serialising(). It aligns request up to some given
alignment. And this parameter may be bdrv_get_cluster_size(), which is
often a lot greater than bs->bl.request_alignment.
Note also, that bdrv_mark_request_serialising() uses signed int64_t for
calculations. So, actually, we already depend on some restrictions.
Happily, bdrv_get_cluster_size() returns int and
bs->bl.request_alignment has 32bit unsigned type, but defined to be a
power of 2 less than INT_MAX. So, we may establish, that INT_MAX is
absolute maximum for any kind of alignment that may occur with the
request.
Note, that bdrv_get_cluster_size() is not documented to return power
of 2, still bdrv_mark_request_serialising() behaves like it is.
Also, backup uses bdi.cluster_size and is not prepared to it not being
power of 2.
So, let's establish that Qemu supports only power-of-2 clusters and
alignments.
So, alignment can't be greater than 2^30.
Finally to be safe with calculations, to not calculate different
maximums for different nodes (depending on cluster size and
request_alignment), let's simply set QEMU_ALIGN_DOWN(INT64_MAX, 2^30)
as absolute maximum bytes length for Qemu. Actually, it's not much less
than INT64_MAX.
OK, then, let's apply it to block/io.
Let's consider all block/io entry points of offset/bytes:
4 bytes/offset interface functions: bdrv_co_preadv_part(),
bdrv_co_pwritev_part(), bdrv_co_copy_range_internal() and
bdrv_co_pdiscard() and we check them all with bdrv_check_request().
We also have one entry point with only offset: bdrv_co_truncate().
Check the offset.
And one public structure: BdrvTrackedRequest. Happily, it has only
three external users:
file-posix.c: adopted by this patch
write-threshold.c: only read fields
test-write-threshold.c: sets obviously small constant values
Better is to make the structure private and add corresponding
interfaces.. Still it's not obvious what kind of interface is needed
for file-posix.c. Let's keep it public but add corresponding
assertions.
After this patch we'll convert functions in block/io.c to int64_t bytes
and offset parameters. We can assume that offset/bytes pair always
satisfy new restrictions, and make
corresponding assertions where needed. If we reach some offset/bytes
point in block/io.c missing bdrv_check_request() it is considered a
bug. As well, if block/io.c modifies a offset/bytes request, expanding
it more then aligning up to request_alignment, it's a bug too.
For all io requests except for discard we keep for now old restriction
of 32bit request length.
iotest 206 output error message changed, as now test disk size is
larger than new limit. Add one more test case with new maximum disk
size to cover too-big-L1 case.

When most iotests want to create a test image that is named differently
from the default $TEST_IMG, they do something like this:
TEST_IMG="$TEST_IMG.base" _make_test_img $options
This works fine with the "file" protocol, but not so much for anything
else: _make_test_img tries to create an image under $TEST_IMG_FILE
first, and only under $TEST_IMG if the former is not set; and on
everything but "file", $TEST_IMG_FILE is set.
There are two ways we can fix this: First, we could make all tests
adjust not only TEST_IMG, but also TEST_IMG_FILE if that is present
(e.g. with something like _set_test_img_suffix $suffix that would affect
not only TEST_IMG but also TEST_IMG_FILE, if necessary). This is a
pretty clean solution, and this is maybe what we should have done from
the start.
But it would also require changes to most existing bash tests. So the
alternative is this: Let _make_test_img see whether $TEST_IMG_FILE still
points to the original value. If so, it is possible that the caller has
adjusted $TEST_IMG but not $TEST_IMG_FILE. In such a case, we can (for
most protocols) derive the corresponding $TEST_IMG_FILE value from
$TEST_IMG value and thus work around what technically is the caller
misbehaving.
This second solution is less clean, but it is robust against people
keeping their old habit of adjusting TEST_IMG only, and requires much
less changes. So this patch implements it.

Commit 1847a4a8c2 clarified that event_wait() can return None (though
only with timeout=0) and commit f12a282ff4 annotated it as returning
Optional[QMPMessage].
Type checks in wait_migration() fail because of the unexpected optional
return type:
iotests.py:750: error: Value of type variable "Msg" of "log" cannot be "Optional[Dict[str, Any]]"
iotests.py:751: error: Value of type "Optional[Dict[str, Any]]" is not indexable
iotests.py:754: error: Value of type "Optional[Dict[str, Any]]" is not indexable
Fortunately, the non-zero default timeout is used in the event_wait()
call, so we can make mypy happy by just asserting this.

Allow the server to expose an additional metacontext to be requested
by savvy clients. qemu-nbd adds a new option -A to expose the
qemu:allocation-depth metacontext through NBD_CMD_BLOCK_STATUS; this
can also be set via QMP when using block-export-add.
qemu as client is hacked into viewing the key aspects of this new
context by abusing the already-experimental x-dirty-bitmap option to
collapse all depths greater than 2, which results in a tri-state value
visible in the output of 'qemu-img map --output=json' (yes, that means
x-dirty-bitmap is now a bit of a misnomer, but I didn't feel like
renaming it as it would introduce a needless break of back-compat,
even though we make no compat guarantees with x- members):
unallocated (depth 0) => "zero":false, "data":true
local (depth 1) => "zero":false, "data":false
backing (depth 2+) => "zero":true, "data":true
libnbd as client is probably a nicer way to get at the information
without having to decipher such hacks in qemu as client. ;)

nbd_server_start_unix_socket() includes an implicit nbd_server_stop(),
but we still need an explicit one at the end of the test (where there
follows no next nbd_server_start_unix_socket()), or qemu-nbd will linger
until the test exits.
This will become important when enabling this test to run on FUSE
exports, because then the export (which is the image used by qemu-nbd)
will go away before qemu-nbd exits, which will lead to qemu-nbd
complaining that it cannot flush the bitmaps in the image.

We need to let _img_info emit the format-specific information so we get
the list of bitmaps we want, but we do not need anything but the
bitmaps. So filter out everything that is irrelevant to us. (Ideally,
this would be a generalized function in common.filters that takes a list
of things to keep, but that would require implementing an anti-bitmap
filter, which would be hard, and which we do not need here. So that is
why this function is just a local hack.)
This lets 291 pass with qcow2 options like refcount_bits or data_file

mypy wants to ensure there's consistency between the kwargs arguments
types and any unspecified keyword arguments. In this case, conv_keys is
a bool, but the remaining keys are Any type. Mypy (correctly) infers the
**kwargs type to be **Dict[str, str], which is not compatible with
conv_keys: bool.
Because QMP typing is a little fraught right now anyway, re-type kwargs
to Dict[str, Any] which has the benefit of silencing this check right
now.
A future re-design might type these more aggressively, but this will
give us a baseline to work from with minimal disruption.

Test 067 from qemu-iotests is executing QMP commands to hotplug
and hot-unplug disks, devices and blockdevs. Because the power
of the text-based test harness is limited, it is actually limiting
the checks that it does, for example by skipping DEVICE_DELETED
events.
tests/qtest already has a similar test, drive_del-test.c.
We can merge them, and even reuse some of the existing code in
drive_del-test.c. This will improve the quality of the test by
covering DEVICE_DELETED events and testing multiple architectures
(therefore covering multiple PCI hotplug mechanisms as well as s390x
virtio-ccw).
The only difference is that the new test will always use null-co:// for
the medium rather than qcow2 or raw, but this should be irrelevant for
what the test is covering. For example there are no "qemu-img check"
runs in 067 that would check that the file is properly closed.
The new tests requires PCI hot-plug support, so drive_del-test
is moved from qemu-system-ppc to qemu-system-ppc64.

If you have the chain 'base.qcow2 <- top.qcow2' and want to merge a
bitmap from top into base, qemu-img was failing with:
qemu-img: Could not open 'top.qcow2': Could not open backing file: Failed to get shared "write" lock
Is another process using the image [base.qcow2]?
The easiest fix is to not open the entire backing chain of either
image (source or destination); after all, the point of 'qemu-img
bitmap' is solely to manipulate bitmaps directly within a single qcow2
image, and this is made more precise if we don't pay attention to
other images in the chain that may happen to have a bitmap by the same
name.
However, note that on a case-by-case analysis, there _are_ times where
we treat it as a feature that we can access a bitmap from a backing
layer in association with an overlay BDS. A demonstration of this is
using NBD to expose both an overlay BDS (for constant contents) and a
bitmap (for learning which blocks are interesting) during an
incremental backup:
Base <- Active <- Temporary
\--block job ->/
where Temporary is being fed by a backup 'sync=none' job. When
exposing Temporary over NBD, referring to a bitmap that lives only in
Active is less effort than having to copy a bitmap into Temporary [1].
So the testsuite additions in this patch check both where bitmaps get
allocated (the qemu-img info output), and that qemu-nbd is indeed able
to access a bitmap inherited from the backing chain since it is a
different use case than 'qemu-img bitmap'.
[1] Full disclosure: prior to the recent commit 374eedd1c4 and
friends, we were NOT able to see bitmaps through filters, which meant
that we actually did not have nice clean semantics for uniformly being
able to pick up bitmaps from anywhere in the backing chain (seen as a
change in behavior between qemu 4.1 and 4.2 at commit 00e30f05de, when
block-copy swapped from a one-off to a filter). Which means libvirt
was already coded to copy bitmaps around for the sake of older qemu,
even though modern qemu no longer needs it. Oh well.

This function preallocates metadata structures and then extends the
image to its new size, but that new size calculation is wrong because
it doesn't take into account that the host_offset variable is always

This problem can be reproduced with preallocation=metadata when the
original size is not cluster-aligned but the new size is. In this case
the final image size will be shorter than expected.

When a write request needs to allocate new clusters (or change the L2
bitmap of existing ones) a QCowL2Meta structure is created so the L2
metadata can be later updated and any copy-on-write can be performed
if necessary.
A write request can span a region consisting of an arbitrary
combination of previously unallocated and allocated clusters, and if
the unallocated ones can be put contiguous to the existing ones then
QEMU will do so in order to minimize the number of write operations.
In practice this means that a write request has not just one but a
number of QCowL2Meta structures. All of them are added to the
cluster_allocs list that is stored in BDRVQcow2State and is used to
detect overlapping requests. After the write request finishes all its
associated QCowL2Meta are removed from that list. calculate_l2_meta()
takes care of creating and putting those structures in the list, and
qcow2_handle_l2meta() takes care of removing them.
The problem is that the error path in handle_alloc() also tries to
remove an item in that list, a remnant from the time when this was
handled there (that code would not even be correct anymore because
it only removes one struct and not all the ones from the same write
request).
This can trigger a double removal of the same item from the list,
causing a crash. This is not easy to reproduce in practice because
it requires that do_alloc_cluster_offset() fails after a successful
previous allocation during the same write request, but it can be
reproduced with the included test case.

Parts of the block layer treat BDS.backing_file as if it were whatever
the image header says (i.e., if it is a relative path, it is relative to
the overlay), other parts treat it like a cache for
bs->backing->bs->filename (relative paths are relative to the CWD).
Considering bs->backing->bs->filename exists, let us make it mean the
former.
Among other things, this now allows the user to specify a base when
using qemu-img to commit an image file in a directory that is not the
CWD (assuming, everything uses relative filenames).
Before this patch:
$ ./qemu-img create -f qcow2 foo/bot.qcow2 1M
$ ./qemu-img create -f qcow2 -b bot.qcow2 foo/mid.qcow2
$ ./qemu-img create -f qcow2 -b mid.qcow2 foo/top.qcow2
$ ./qemu-img commit -b mid.qcow2 foo/top.qcow2
qemu-img: Did not find 'mid.qcow2' in the backing chain of 'foo/top.qcow2'
$ ./qemu-img commit -b foo/mid.qcow2 foo/top.qcow2
qemu-img: Did not find 'foo/mid.qcow2' in the backing chain of 'foo/top.qcow2'
$ ./qemu-img commit -b $PWD/foo/mid.qcow2 foo/top.qcow2
qemu-img: Did not find '[...]/foo/mid.qcow2' in the backing chain of 'foo/top.qcow2'
After this patch:
$ ./qemu-img commit -b mid.qcow2 foo/top.qcow2
Image committed.
$ ./qemu-img commit -b foo/mid.qcow2 foo/top.qcow2
qemu-img: Did not find 'foo/mid.qcow2' in the backing chain of 'foo/top.qcow2'
$ ./qemu-img commit -b $PWD/foo/mid.qcow2 foo/top.qcow2
Image committed.
With this change, bdrv_find_backing_image() must look at whether the
user has overridden a BDS's backing file. If so, it can no longer use
bs->backing_file, but must instead compare the given filename against
the backing node's filename directly.
Note that this changes the QAPI output for a node's backing_file. We
had very inconsistent output there (sometimes what the image header
said, sometimes the actual filename of the backing image). This
inconsistent output was effectively useless, so we have to decide one
way or the other. Considering that bs->backing_file usually at runtime
contained the path to the image relative to qemu's CWD (or absolute),
this patch changes QAPI's backing_file to always report the
bs->backing->bs->filename from now on. If you want to receive the image
header information, you have to refer to full-backing-filename.
This necessitates a change to iotest 228. The interesting information
it really wanted is the image header, and it can get that now, but it
has to use full-backing-filename instead of backing_file. Because of
this patch's changes to bs->backing_file's behavior, we also need some
reference output changes.
Along with the changes to bs->backing_file, stop updating
BDS.backing_format in bdrv_backing_attach() as well. This way,
ImageInfo's backing-filename and backing-filename-format fields will
represent what the image header says and nothing else.
iotest 245 changes in behavior: With the backing node no longer
overriding the parent node's backing_file string, you can now omit the
@backing option when reopening a node with neither a default nor a
current backing file even if it used to have a backing node at some
point.
273 also changes: The base image is opened without a format layer, so
ImageInfo.backing-filename-format used to report "file" for the base
image's overlay after blockdev-snapshot. However, the image header
never says "file" anywhere, so it now reports $IMGFMT.

This changes iotest 204's output, because blkdebug on top of a COW node
used to make qemu-img map disregard the rest of the backing chain (the

allocation in the base image is reported correctly.

Providing an empty string for the backing file parameter like so:

allows the flow of control to reach and subsequently fail an assert

Traditional qcow2 images don't allow preallocation if a backing file

tell that its data should be read from the backing file.
Extended L2 entries have individual allocation bits for each

The offset field of an uncompressed cluster's L2 entry must be aligned
to the cluster size, otherwise it is invalid. If the cluster has no
data then it means that the offset points to a preallocation, so we
can clear the offset field without affecting the guest-visible data.
This is what 'qemu-img check' does when run in repair mode.
On traditional qcow2 images this can only happen when QCOW_OFLAG_ZERO
is set, and repairing such entries turns the clusters from ZERO_ALLOC
into ZERO_PLAIN.
Extended L2 entries have no ZERO_ALLOC clusters and no QCOW_OFLAG_ZERO
but the idea is the same: if none of the subclusters are allocated
then we can clear the offset field and leave the bitmap untouched.
