23cab7b7a9 Makefile: fix up parallel building under MSYS+MinGW
This patch enables parallel building of QEMU in MSYS+MinGW environment.
Currently an attempt to build QEMU in parallel fails on generation of
version.lo (and version.o too).

The cause of the failure is that when listing prerequisites "Makefile"
references "config-host.h" by absolute path in some rules and by relative
path in others. Make cannot figure out that these references points to the
same file which leads to the race: the generation of "version.*" which
requires "$(BUILD_DIR)/config-host.h" is launched in parallel with the
generation of "config-host.h" needed by other "Makefile" targets.

This patch removes "$(BUILD_DIR)/" prefix from corresponding prerequisite
of "version.*". There is no other prerequisites "$(BUILD_DIR)/config-host.h"
found.

Also note that not every version of MSYS is able to build QEMU in parallel,
see: "http://sourceforge.net/p/mingw/bugs/1950/". The suggested version is
1.0.17.

89ae5831a5 trace: install trace-events file
Install the ./trace-events file into the data directory. This file
contains the list of trace events that were built into QEMU at
compile-time.

The file is a handy reference for the set of trace events that the QEMU
binary was built with. It is also needed by the simpletrace.py tool
that parses binary trace data either emitted from QEMU when built with
--enable-trace-backend=simple or by the SystemTap simpletrace script
that QEMU provides.

21cd70dfc1 qapi script: add event support
qapi-event.py will parse the schema and generate qapi-event.c, then
the API in qapi-event.c can be used to handle events in qemu code.
All API have prefix "qapi_event".

The script mainly includes two parts: generate API for each event
define, generate an enum type for all defined events.

Since in some cases the real emit behavior may change, for example,
qemu-img would not send a event, a callback layer is used to
control the behavior. As a result, the stubs at compile time
can be saved, the binding of block layer code and monitor code
will become looser.

5b808275f3 trace: Multi-backend tracing
Adds support to compile QEMU with multiple tracing backends at the same time.

For example, you can compile QEMU with:

  $ ./configure --enable-trace-backends=ftrace,dtrace

Where 'ftrace' can be handy for having an in-flight record of events, and 'dtrace' can be later used to extract more information from the system.

This patch allows having both available without recompiling QEMU.

2115182f0c Makefile: strip tools and modules too
Commit 52ba784d3 replaced $(STRIP_OPT) with $(STRIP) in some
places (for example, Makefile.target), but not all of them.
There are a few places remain in main Makefile which still
uses $(STRIP_OPT). Replace these places with $(STRIP) too.

While at it, simplify variable pattern substitution of the
surrounding places, change $(patsubst pat, rep,$(var)) into
$(var:pat=rep) which is much easier to read (this is probably
a good idea to do everywhere).

9c269f6d7b Makefile: remove bashism
When installing modules (when --enable-modules is specified for
./configure), Makefile uses the following construct to replace all
slashes with dashes in module name:

 ${s//\//-}

This is a bash-specific substitution mechanism. POSIX does not
have it, and some operating systems (for example Debian) does not
implement this construct in default shell (for example dash).

Use more traditional way to perform the substitution: use `tr' tool.

f4b11eee2f Makefile: Fix "make clean"
This fixes a dangerous bug: "make clean" after "make distclean" will
delete every single file including those under .git, if you do in-tree

Rationale: A first "make distclean" will unset $(DSOSUF), a following
"make distclean" or "make clean" will find all the files and delete it.

Fix it by explicitly typing the file extensions here, and combine
multiple find invocations into one.

e26110cfc6 module: implement module loading
This patch adds loading, stamp checking and initialization of modules.

The init function of dynamic module is no longer directly called as
__attribute__((constructor)) in static linked version, it is called
only after passed the checking of presense of stamp symbol:

    qemu_stamp_$RELEASEHASH

where $RELEASEHASH is generated by hashing version strings and content
of configure script.

With this, modules built from a different tree/version/configure will
not be loaded.

The module loading code requires gmodule-2.0.

Modules are searched under
 - CONFIG_MODDIR
 - executable folder (to allow running qemu-{img,io} in the build
   directory)
 - ../ of executable folder (to allow running system emulator in the
   build directory)

Modules are linked under their subdir respectively, then copied to top
level of build directory for above convinience, e.g.:
    $(BUILD_DIR)/block/curl.so -> $(BUILD_DIR)/block-curl.so

17969268f5 rules.mak: introduce DSO rules
Add necessary rules and flags for shared object generation.
The new rules introduced here are:

1) %.o in $(common-obj-m) is compiled to %.o, then linked to %.so.

2) %.mo in $(common-obj-m) is the placeholder for %.so for pattern
matching in Makefile. It's linked to "-shared" with all its dependencies
(multiple *.o) as input. Which means the list of depended objects must
be specified in each sub-Makefile.objs:

    foo.mo-objs := bar.o baz.o qux.o

in the same style with foo.o-cflags and foo.o-libs. The objects here
will be prefixed with "$(obj)/" if it's a subdirectory Makefile.objs.

3) For all files ending up in %.so, the following is added automatically:

    foo.o-cflags += -fPIC -DBUILD_DSO

Also introduce --enable-modules in configure, the option will enable
support of shared object build. Otherwise objects are static linked to
executables.

ba1183da9a rules.mak: fix $(obj) to a real relative path
Makefile.target includes rule.mak and unnested common-obj-y, then prefix
them with '../', this will ignore object specific QEMU_CFLAGS in subdir
Makefile.objs:

    $(obj)/curl.o: QEMU_CFLAGS += $(CURL_CFLAGS)

Because $(obj) here is './block', instead of '../block'. This doesn't
hurt compiling because we basically build all .o from top Makefile,
before entering Makefile.target, but it will affact arriving per-object
libs support.

The starting point of $(obj) is passed in as argument of unnest-vars, as
well as nested variables, so that different Makefiles can pass in a
right value.

da87dd7bd7 sun4m: Add FCode ROM for TCX framebuffer
Upstream OpenBIOS now implements SBus probing in order to determine the
contents of a physical bus slot, which is required to allow OpenBIOS to

SBus probing works by detecting the presence of an FCode program
(effectively tokenised Forth) at the base address of each slot, and if
present executes it so that it creates its own device node in the
OpenBIOS device tree.

The FCode ROM is generated as part of the OpenBIOS build and should

The latest configure invocation was saved in config-host.mak and could

b39297aedf qemu-ga: Add Windows VSS provider and requester as DLL
Adds VSS provider and requester as a qga-vss.dll, which is loaded by
Windows VSS service as well as by qemu-ga.

"provider.cpp" implements a basic stub of a software VSS provider.
Currently, this module only relays a frozen event from VSS service to the
agent, and thaw event from the agent to VSS service, to block VSS process
to keep the system frozen while snapshots are taken at the host.

To register the provider to the guest system as COM+ application, the type
library (.tlb) for qga-vss.dll is required. To build it from COM IDL (.idl),
VisualC++, MIDL and stdole2.tlb in Windows SDK are required. This patch also
adds pre-compiled .tlb file in the repository in order to enable
cross-compile qemu-ga.exe for Windows with VSS support.

"requester.cpp" provides the VSS requester to kick the VSS snapshot process.
Qemu-ga.exe works without the DLL, although fsfreeze features are disabled.

These functions are only supported in Windows 2003 or later. In older
systems, fsfreeze features are disabled.

In several versions of Windows which don't support attribute
VSS_VOLSNAP_ATTR_NO_AUTORECOVERY, DoSnapshotSet fails with error
VSS_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND. In this patch, we just ignore this error.
To solve this fundamentally, we need a framework to handle mount writable
snapshot on guests, which is required by VSS auto-recovery feature
(cleanup phase after a snapshot is taken).

d9840e2592 qemu-ga: Add configure options to specify path to Windows/VSS SDK
To enable VSS support in qemu-ga for Windows, header files included in
VSS SDK are required.
The VSS support is enabled by the configure option like below:
  ./configure --with-vss-sdk="/path/to/VSS SDK"

If the path is omitted, it tries to search the headers from default paths
and VSS support is enabled only if the SDK is found.
VSS support is disabled if --without-vss-sdk or --with-vss-sdk=no is
specified.

VSS SDK is available from:
  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=23490

To cross-compile using mingw, you need to setup the SDK on Windows
environments to extract headers. You can also extract the SDK headers on
POSIX environments using scripts/extract-vss-headers and msitools.

In addition, --with-win-sdk="/path/to/Windows SDK" option is also added to
specify path to Windows SDK, which may be used for native-compile of .tlb
file of qemu-ga VSS provider. However, this is usually unnecessary because
pre-compiled .tlb file is included.

3bc2f570ec build: replace weak symbols with a static library
Weak symbols were a nice idea, but they turned out not to be a good one.
Toolchain support is just too sparse, in particular llvm-gcc is totally
broken.

This patch uses a surprisingly low-tech approach: a static library.
Symbols in a static library are always overridden by symbols in an
object file. Furthermore, if you place each function in a separate
source file, object files for unused functions will not be taken in.
This means that each function can use all the dependencies that it needs
(especially QAPI stuff such as error_setg).

Thus, all stubs are placed in separate object files and put together in
a static library. The library then is linked to all programs.

54c2e50205 build: Fix linking failure for qemu-ga
This patch will fix the following linking failed:

  LINK qemu-ga
gcc: error: qga/../qapi-generated/qga-qapi-types.o: No such file or directory
gcc: error: qga/../qapi-generated/qga-qapi-visit.o: No such file or directory
gcc: error: qga/../qapi-generated/qga-qmp-marshal.o: No such file or directory
make: *** [qemu-ga] Error 1

Commit cdc976b040 changes the
dependencies of qemu-ga to depend "../qapi-generated/qga-qapi-types.o",
which will be expanded to "qga/../qapi-generated/qga-qapi-types.o" when
building qemu-ga.

In top-level Makefile, we defined a target "qapi-generated/qga-qapi-types.o"
which was not equal to "qga/../qapi-generated/qga-qapi-types" in the
Makefile world. So "No such file" error happened when qemu-ga was linking.

The easy approach to fix is to change the target name to
"qga/../qapi-generated/qga-qapi-types.o", but it is weird.

So, in order to solve it more graciously, I move those temporary
files(qga-qapi-*.{c,h}) qemu-ga depends on to qemu-ga/qapi-generated,
this makes dependencies more clearer.

2636fcb653 PPC: e500: dt: start with empty device tree
Now that all of the device tree bits are generated during runtime, we
can get rid of the device tree blob and instead start from scratch with
an empty device tree.

f69a9c666b Makefile: Remove BUILD_DIR from qapi-dir
qapi-dir does not need an absolute path. All other build directories
are relative. When BUILD_DIR is removed, the build output looks better
(no long lines with absolute paths when everything else uses short
lines):

  GEN qapi-generated/qga-qapi-types.c
  CC qapi-generated/qga-qapi-types.o
  GEN qapi-generated/qga-qapi-visit.c
  CC qapi-generated/qga-qapi-visit.o
  GEN qapi-generated/qga-qmp-marshal.c
  CC qapi-generated/qga-qmp-marshal.o

Using a relative path also avoids potential problems when BUILD_DIR
includes blanks.

3d9b49254f consolidate qemu_iovec_memset{,_skip}() into single function and use existing iov_memset()
This patch combines two functions into one, and replaces
the implementation with already existing iov_memset() from
iov.c.

The new prototype of qemu_iovec_memset():
  size_t qemu_iovec_memset(qiov, size_t offset, int fillc, size_t bytes)
It is different from former qemu_iovec_memset_skip(), and
I want to make other functions to be consistent with it
too: first how much to skip, second what, and 3rd how many
of it. It also returns actual number of bytes filled in,
which may be less than the requested `bytes' if qiov is
smaller than offset+bytes, in the same way iov_memset()
does.

While at it, use utility function iov_memset() from
iov.h in posix-aio-compat.c, where qiov was used.

3d5a3f9a7f build: move target-independent hw/ objects to nested Makefile.objs
This patch starts converting the hw/ directory. Some files in hw/
are compiled once, some twice (32-/64-bit), some once per target.
Each category is moved in a separate patch.

After this patch, the files that are compiled once will show the
same hierarchy in the build tree as they do in the source tree,
for example hw/qdev.o instead of just qdev.o.
