The next version of lttng-libs will not require liburcu at run time anymore.
Therefore, it is expected that distros will not include the urcubp libraries
anymore when installing lttng-ust-devel.
To avoid future problems, just require pkg-config to detect lttng-ust.
The .pc files for lttng-ust correctly include liburcubp.a for static
builds, and have always done since pkg-config files were added in 2011.

While the default config works well enough it does end up enabling a
lot of stuff. For more minimal builds we can select a different list
of devices and let Kconfig work out what we want. For example:
../../configure --without-default-features \
--target-list=arm-softmmu,aarch64-softmmu \
--with-devices-aarch64=minimal
will override the aarch64-softmmu default set of devices with a more
minimal set of devices that just enables the virt and sbsa-ref models.

While most libraries do not need a CONFIG_* symbol because the
"when:" clauses are enough, some do. Add them back or stop
using them if possible.
In the case of libpmem, the statement to add the CONFIG_* symbol
was still in configure, but could not be triggered because it
checked for "no" instead of "disabled" (and it would be wrong anyway
since the test for the library has not been done yet).

The -msoft-float switch is not available in older versions of Clang.
Since we rely on the compiler to not generate floating point instructions
unexpectedly, we block those old compilers now via a test in the configure
script. Note that for some weird reasons, the Clang compiler only complains
about the missing soft-float support if no other flags are passed via
"-Wl,..." to the linker. So we have to use "compile_object" instead of
"compile_prog" for this check.

_sigev_un._tid is an internal glibc field and is not available on
musl libc. The sigevent(7) man page and Linux UAPI headers both use
sigev_notify_thread_id as a public way to access this field.
musl libc supports this field since 1.2.2[0], and glibc plans to
add support as well[1][2].
If sigev_notify_thread_id is not available, fall back to _sigev_un._tid
as before.

It has been over two years since RHEL-8 was released, and thus per the
platform build policy, we no longer need to support RHEL-7 as a build
target. So from the RHEL-7 perspective, we do not have to support
libssh v0.7 anymore now.
Let's look at the versions from other distributions and operating
systems - according to repology.org, current shipping versions are:
RHEL-8: 0.9.4
Debian Buster: 0.8.7
openSUSE Leap 15.2: 0.8.7
Ubuntu LTS 18.04: 0.8.0 *
Ubuntu LTS 20.04: 0.9.3
FreeBSD: 0.9.5
Fedora 33: 0.9.5
Fedora 34: 0.9.5
OpenBSD: 0.9.5
macOS HomeBrew: 0.9.5
HaikuPorts: 0.9.5
* The version of libssh in Ubuntu 18.04 claims to be 0.8.0 from the
name of the package, but in reality it is a 0.7 patched up as a
Frankenstein monster with patches from the 0.8 development branch.
This gave us some headaches in the past already and so it never worked
with QEMU. All attempts to get it supported have failed in the past,
patches for QEMU have never been merged and a request to Ubuntu to
fix it in their 18.04 distro has been ignored:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libssh/+bug/1847514
Thus we really should ignore the libssh in Ubuntu 18.04 in QEMU, too.
Fix it by bumping the minimum libssh version to something that is
greater than 0.8.0 now. Debian Buster and openSUSE Leap have the
oldest version and so 0.8.7 is the new minimum.

We are generating a lot of target-specific defines in the *-config-devices.h
and *-config-target.h files. Using them in common code is wrong and leads
to very subtle bugs since a "#ifdef CONFIG_SOMETHING" is not working there
as expected. To avoid these issues, we are already poisoning many of the
macros in include/exec/poison.h - but it's cumbersome to maintain this
list manually. Thus let's generate an additional list of poisoned macros
automatically from the current config switches - this should give us a
much better test coverage via the different CI configurations.
Note that CONFIG_TCG (which is also defined in config-host.h) and
CONFIG_USER_ONLY are special, so we have to filter these out.

"pkg-config --variable=gdbus_codegen gio-2.0" returns "gdbus-codegen",
and it does not pass test -x (which does not walk the path).
Meson 0.58.0 notices that something is iffy, as the dbus_vmstate1
assignment in tests/qtest/meson.build uses an empty string as the
command, and fails very eloquently:
../tests/qtest/meson.build:92:2: ERROR: No program name specified.
Use the "has" function instead of test -x, and fix the generation
of config-host.mak since meson.build expects that GDBUS_CODEGEN
is absent, rather than empty, if the tool is unavailable.

Clang unfortunately does not support generating code for the z900
architecture level and starts with the z10 instead. Thus to be able
to support compiling with Clang, we have to check for the supported
compiler flags. The disadvantage is of course that the bios image
will only run with z10 guest CPUs upwards (which is what most people
use anyway), so just in case let's also emit a warning in that case
(we will continue to ship firmware images that have been pre-built
with GCC in future releases, so this should not impact normal users,
too).

Meson instead rebuilds the serialized information using cmd_line.txt.
In some cases cmd_line.txt can contain stale information, since it
is not rebuild except when "meson setup" is invoked. Update it in
the configure script to allow upgrading our Meson version.

Commit "c87ea11631 configure: add --without-default-features" use
default_feature to set default values for configure option. This value
is used for EXESUF too.
However, EXESUF is not option to be tested, it is just append to any
binary name so using --without-default-features set EXESUF to "n"o and
all binaries using it has form <name>no (e.g. qemu-imgno).
This is not expected behavior as disabling features should not cause
generating different binary names.
Reverting back to setting EXESUF to empty value unless needed otherwise.

In bbc17caf81, we used an alias attribute to allow target_page
to be declared const, and yet be initialized late.
This fails when using LTO with several versions of gcc.
The compiler looks through the alias and decides that the const
variable is statically initialized to zero, then propagates that
zero to many uses of the variable.
This can be avoided by compiling one object file with -fno-lto.
In this way, any initializer cannot be seen, and the constant
propagation does not occur.
Since we are certain to have this separate compilation unit, we
can drop the alias attribute as well. We simply have differing
declarations for target_page in different compilation units.
Drop the use of init_target_page, and drop the configure detection
for CONFIG_ATTRIBUTE_ALIAS.
In order to change the compilation flags for a file with meson,
we must use a static_library. This runs into specific_ss, where
we would need to create many static_library instances.
Fix this by splitting page-vary.c: the page-vary-common.c part is
compiled once as a static_library, while the page-vary.c part is
left in specific_ss in order to handle the target-specific value
of TARGET_PAGE_BITS_MIN.

This has the following visible changes:
- GBM is required only for OpenGL dma-buf.
- X11 is explicitly required by gtk-egl.
- EGL is now mandatory for the OpenGL displays.
The last one needs some detailed description. Before this change,
EGL was tested only for OpenGL dma-buf with the check of
EGL_MESA_image_dma_buf_export. However, all of the OpenGL
displays depend on EGL and EGL_MESA_image_dma_buf_export is always
defined by epoxy's EGL interface.
Therefore, it makes more sense to always check the presence of EGL
and say the OpenGL displays are available along with OpenGL dma-buf
if it is present.

9.1 to support the "ieee_half" data type we report. This only affects
when GDB tests are run; users can still use lower versions of gdb as

Replace the --enable-git-update and --disable-git-update configure params
with the param --with-git-submodules=(update|validate|ignore) to
allow 3 options for building from a git repo.
This is needed because downstream packagers, e.g. Debian, Ubuntu, etc,
also keep the source code in git, but do not want to enable the
'git_update' mode; with the current code, that's not possible even
if the downstream package specifies --disable-git-update.
The previous parameters are deprecated but still available; the
--enable-git-update parameter maps to --with-git-submodules=update and
--disable-git-update parameter maps to --with-git-submodules=validate.
The configure script behavior is slightly modified, where previously
the dtc, capstone, and slirp submodules were not validated when
--disable-git-update was specified (but were updated with git-update
enabled), now they are validated when using --with-git-submodules=validate
and are only ignored when using --with-git-submodules=ignore.

A workaround added in early days of 64-bit OSX forced x86_64 if the
host machine had 64-bit support. This creates issues when cross-
compiling for ARM64. Additionally, the user can always use --cpu=* to
manually set the host CPU and therefore this workaround should be
removed.

Move the preadv availability check to meson.build. This is what we
want to be doing for host-OS-feature-checks anyway, but it also fixes
a problem with building for macOS with the most recent XCode SDK on a
Catalina host.
On that configuration, 'preadv()' is provided as a weak symbol, so
that programs can be built with optional support for it and make a
runtime availability check to see whether the preadv() they have is a
working one or one which they must not call because it will
runtime-assert. QEMU's configure test passes (unless you're building
with --enable-werror) because the test program using preadv()
compiles, but then QEMU crashes at runtime when preadv() is called,
with errors like:
dyld: lazy symbol binding failed: Symbol not found: _preadv
Referenced from: /Users/pm215/src/qemu/./build/x86/tests/test-replication
Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
dyld: Symbol not found: _preadv
Referenced from: /Users/pm215/src/qemu/./build/x86/tests/test-replication
Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
Meson's own function availability check has a special case for macOS
which adds '-Wl,-no_weak_imports' to the compiler flags, which forces
the test to require the real function, not the macOS-version-too-old
stub.
So this commit fixes the bug where macOS builds on Catalina currently
require --disable-werror.

There are two cases that need to be accounted for when compiling QEMU
for MinGW32:
1) A standalone distribution, where QEMU is self contained and
extracted by the user, such as a user would download from the QEMU
website. In this case, all the QEMU executable files should be
rooted in $prefix to ensure they can be easily found by the user
2) QEMU integrated into a distribution image/sysroot/SDK and
distributed with other programs. In this case, the provided
arguments for bindir/datadir/etc. should be respected as they for a
Linux build.
Restructures the MinGW path configuration so that all of the paths
except bindir use the same rules as when building for other platforms.
This satisfies #2 and #1 since these files do not need to be directly in
$prefix anyway.
The handling for --bindir is changed so that it defaults to $prefix on
MinGW (maintaining the compatibility with #1), but if the user specifies
a specific path when configuring it can also satisfy #2.

This patch adds a flag to enable/disable control flow integrity checks
on indirect function calls.
This feature only allows indirect function calls at runtime to functions
with compatible signatures.
This feature is only provided by LLVM/Clang, and depends on link-time
optimization which is currently supported only with LLVM/Clang >= 6.0
We also add an option to enable a debugging version of cfi, with verbose
output in case of a CFI violation.
CFI on indirect function calls does not support calls to functions in
shared libraries (since they were not known at compile time), and such
calls are forbidden. QEMU relies on dlopen/dlsym when using modules,
so we make modules incompatible with CFI.
All the checks are performed in meson.build. configure is only used to
forward the flags to meson

By default QEMU enables a lot of features if it can probe and find the
support libraries. It also enables a bunch of features by default.
This patch adds the ability to build --without-default-features which

The main use case for this is testing our build assumptions and for
minimising the amount of stuff you build if you just want to test a

Coverity always complains about switch-case statements that fall through
the next one when there is no comment in between - which could indicate
a forgotten "break" statement. Instead of handling these issues after
they have been committed, it would be better to avoid them in the build
process already. Thus let's enable the -Wimplicit-fallthrough warning now.
The "=2" level seems to be a good compromise between being too strict and
too generic about the possible comments, so we'll start with "=2" for now.

Since it never had the wanted effect this usage of LDFLAGS_NOPIE, should be

QEMU binaries no longer launch successfully with recent SystemTap
releases. This is because modular QEMU builds link the sdt semaphores
into the main binary instead of into the shared objects where they are
used. The symbol visibility of semaphores is 'hidden' and the dynamic
linker prints an error during module loading:
$ ./configure --enable-trace-backends=dtrace --enable-modules ...
...
Failed to open module: /builddir/build/BUILD/qemu-4.2.0/s390x-softmmu/../block-curl.so: undefined symbol: qemu_curl_close_semaphore
The long-term solution is to generate per-module dtrace .o files and
link them into the module instead of the main binary.
In the short term we can define STAP_SDT_V2 so dtrace(1) produces a .o
file with 'default' symbol visibility instead of 'hidden'. This
workaround is small and easier to merge for QEMU 5.2 and downstream
backports.

In commit 76346b6264 we tried to add a configure check that
the libgio pkg-config data was correct, which builds an executable
linked against it. Unfortunately this doesn't catch the problem
(missing static library dependency info), because a "do nothing" test
source file doesn't have any symbol references that cause the linker
to pull in .o files from libgio.a, and so we don't see the "missing
symbols from libmount" error that a full QEMU link triggers.
(The ineffective test went unnoticed because of a typo that
effectively disabled libgio unconditionally, but after commit
3569a5dfc1 fixed that, a static link of the system emulator on
Ubuntu stopped working again.)
Improve the gio test by having the test source fragment reference a
g_dbus function (which is what is indirectly causing us to end up
wanting functions from libmount).

The vhost-user protocol uses the Linux eventfd feature and is typically
connected to Linux kvm.ko ioeventfd and irqfd file descriptors. The
protocol specification in docs/interop/vhost-user.rst does not describe
how platforms without eventfd support work.
The QEMU vhost-user devices compile on other POSIX host operating
systems because eventfd usage is abstracted in QEMU. The libvhost-user
programs in contrib/ do not compile but we failed to notice since they
are not built by default.
Make it clear that vhost-user is only supported on Linux for the time
being. If someone wishes to support it on other platforms then the
details can be added to vhost-user.rst and CI jobs can test the feature
to prevent bitrot.

Initially, libudev detection was bundled with --enable-mpath because
qemu-pr-helper was the only user of libudev. Recently however the USB
U2F emulation has also started using libudev, so add a separate
option. This also allows 1) disabling libudev if desired for static
builds and 2) for non-static builds, requiring libudev even if
multipath support is undesirable.
The multipath test is adjusted, because it is now possible to enter it
with configurations that should fail, such as --static --enable-mpath
--disable-libudev.

Now that the build is done entirely by Meson, there is no need
to keep the Makefile conversion. Instead, we can ask Ninja about
the targets it exposes and forward them.
The main advantages are, from smallest to largest:
- reducing the possible namespace pollution within the Makefile
- removal of a relatively large Python program
- faster build because parsing Makefile.ninja is slower than
parsing build.ninja; and faster build after Meson runs because
we do not have to generate Makefile.ninja.
- tracking of command lines, which provides more accurate rebuilds
In addition the change removes the requirement for GNU make 3.82, which
was annoying on Mac, and avoids bugs on Windows due to ninjatool not
knowing how to convert Windows escapes to POSIX escapes.

This thread from a little over a year ago:
http://lists.wpkg.org/pipermail/sheepdog/2019-March/thread.html
states that sheepdog is no longer actively developed. The only mentioned
users are some companies who are said to have it for legacy reasons with
plans to replace it by Ceph. There is talk about cutting out existing
features to turn it into a simple demo of how to write a distributed
block service. There is no evidence of anyone working on that idea:
https://github.com/sheepdog/sheepdog/commits/master
No real commits to git since Jan 2018, and before then just some minor
technical debt cleanup.
There is essentially no activity on the mailing list aside from
patches to QEMU that get CC'd due to our MAINTAINERS entry.
Fedora packages for sheepdog failed to build from upstream source
because of the more strict linker that no longer merges duplicate
global symbols. Fedora patches it to add the missing "extern"
annotations and presumably other distros do to, but upstream source
remains broken.
There is only basic compile testing, no functional testing of the
driver.
Since there are no build pre-requisites the sheepdog driver is currently
enabled unconditionally. This would result in configure issuing a
deprecation warning by default for all users. Thus the configure default
is changed to disable it, requiring users to pass --enable-sheepdog to
build the driver.

Because most files in QEMU are grouped into static libraries, Meson conservatively
compiles them with -fPIC. This is overkill and produces slowdowns up to 20% on
some TCG tests.
As a stopgap measure, use the b_staticpic option to limit the slowdown to
--enable-pie. https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/pull/7760 will allow
us to use b_staticpic=false and let Meson do the right thing.

debugging executables on Windows which causes gdb to fail with memory access

Keep ASLR enabled by default on Windows via the --dynamicbase compiler flag
except for --enable-debug builds when there is a clear expectation that a
functioning gdb is expected at the cost of slightly less security.

Environment variables like CFLAGS are easy to accidentally change. Meson
warns if that happens, but in a project with a lot of configuration that
is easy to lose. It is also surprising behavior since meson caches -D
options and remembers those on reconfiguration (which we rely on,
since configure options become -D options).
By placing the user-provided CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS and LDFLAGS in the
cross file, we at least get consistent behavior. These environment
variables are still ugly and not really recommended, but there are
distros that rely on them. For the gory details, refer to
https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/issues/4664.

If the CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS or LDFLAGS variables are present in the environment,
any modification made within the configure script is passed down to Meson.
This is particularly undesirable for the "-pie" option, since it overrides
"-shared" and thus messes up the linker flags for shared modules.
Using a separate variable therefore fixes the bug, while clarifying that
the scope of these CFLAGS is just the configure script.
We also do not need to pass those variables in config-host.mak; they
were only used for printing the summary now that all submodules are
built with handwritten Meson rules). For now synthesize CFLAGS in the
configuration summary, the next patch will also pass them in a cleaner
way using the cross file.

There are better ways to do this, e.g. meson cmake subproject,
but that requires cmake 3.7 and some of our CI environments
only provide cmake 3.5.
Nor can we add a meson.build file to capstone/, because the git
submodule would then always report "untracked files". Fixing that
would require creating our own branch on the qemu git mirror, at
which point we could just as easily create a native meson subproject.
Instead, build the library via the main meson.build.
This improves the current state of affairs in that we will re-link

Drop the "Program Files" path completely: it is only usable on English

All Meson executables should specify their dependencies explicitly, either

not propagate dependencies correctly from static libraries, for example.
Therefore, flags for dependencies need not be included in QEMU_CFLAGS.

Attempting to add the library dependencies at the same time as the

When using --enable-werror for the macOS builders in the Cirrus-CI,
the atomic64 test is currently failing, and config.log shows a bunch
of error messages like this:
config-temp/qemu-conf.c:6:7: error: implicit declaration of function
'__atomic_load_8' is invalid in C99 [-Werror,-Wimplicit-function-declaration]
y = __atomic_load_8(&x, 0);
^
config-temp/qemu-conf.c:6:7: error: this function declaration is not a
prototype [-Werror,-Wstrict-prototypes]
Seems like these __atomic_*_8 functions are available in one of the
libraries there, so that the test links and passes there when not
using --enable-werror. But there does not seem to be a valid prototype
for them in any of the header files, so that the test fails when using
--enable-werror.
Fix it by using the "official" built-in functions instead (see e.g.
https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/_005f_005fatomic-Builtins.html).
We are not using the *_8 variants in QEMU anyway.

This patch implements functionality of following ioctls:
BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_CREATE - Creating a btrfs subvolume
Create a btrfs subvolume. The subvolume is created using the ioctl's
third argument which represents a pointer to a following structure
type:
struct btrfs_ioctl_vol_args {
__s64 fd;
char name[BTRFS_PATH_NAME_MAX + 1];
};
Before calling this ioctl, the fields of this structure should be filled
with aproppriate values. The fd field represents the file descriptor
value of the subvolume and the name field represents the subvolume
path.
BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_GETFLAGS - Getting subvolume flags
Read the flags of the btrfs subvolume. The flags are read using
the ioctl's third argument that is a pointer of __u64 (unsigned long).
The third argument represents a bit mask that can be composed of following
values:
BTRFS_SUBVOL_RDONLY (1ULL << 1)
BTRFS_SUBVOL_QGROUP_INHERIT (1ULL << 2)
BTRFS_DEVICE_SPEC_BY_ID (1ULL << 3)
BTRFS_SUBVOL_SPEC_BY_ID (1ULL << 4)
BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_SETFLAGS - Setting subvolume flags
Set the flags of the btrfs subvolume. The flags are set using the
ioctl's third argument that is a pointer of __u64 (unsigned long).
The third argument represents a bit mask that can be composed of same
values as in the case of previous ioctl (BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_GETFLAGS).
BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_GETINFO - Getting subvolume information
Read information about the subvolume. The subvolume information is
returned in the ioctl's third argument which represents a pointer to
a following structure type:
struct btrfs_ioctl_get_subvol_info_args {
/* Id of this subvolume */
__u64 treeid;
/* Name of this subvolume, used to get the real name at mount point */
char name[BTRFS_VOL_NAME_MAX + 1];
/*
* Id of the subvolume which contains this subvolume.
* Zero for top-level subvolume or a deleted subvolume.
*/
__u64 parent_id;
/*
* Inode number of the directory which contains this subvolume.
* Zero for top-level subvolume or a deleted subvolume
*/
__u64 dirid;
/* Latest transaction id of this subvolume */
__u64 generation;
/* Flags of this subvolume */
__u64 flags;
/* UUID of this subvolume */
__u8 uuid[BTRFS_UUID_SIZE];
/*
* UUID of the subvolume of which this subvolume is a snapshot.
* All zero for a non-snapshot subvolume.
*/
__u8 parent_uuid[BTRFS_UUID_SIZE];
/*
* UUID of the subvolume from which this subvolume was received.
* All zero for non-received subvolume.
*/
__u8 received_uuid[BTRFS_UUID_SIZE];
/* Transaction id indicating when change/create/send/receive happened */
__u64 ctransid;
__u64 otransid;
__u64 stransid;
__u64 rtransid;
/* Time corresponding to c/o/s/rtransid */
struct btrfs_ioctl_timespec ctime;
struct btrfs_ioctl_timespec otime;
struct btrfs_ioctl_timespec stime;
struct btrfs_ioctl_timespec rtime;
/* Must be zero */
__u64 reserved[8];
};
All of the fields of this structure are filled after the ioctl call.
Implementation notes:
Ioctls BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_CREATE and BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_GETINFO have structure
types as third arguments. That is the reason why a corresponding definition
are added in file 'linux-user/syscall_types.h'.
The line '#include <linux/btrfs.h>' is added in file 'linux-user/syscall.c' to
recognise preprocessor definitions for these ioctls. Since the file "linux/btrfs.h"
was added in the kernel version 3.9, it is enwrapped in an #ifdef statement
with parameter CONFIG_BTRFS which is defined in 'configure' if the
header file is present.

Meson includes the same logic that tries to look for -lz if
pkg-config (and cmake) cannot find zlib. The undocumented
--disable-zlib-test option becomes a no-op.
There is still an instance of "-lz" in the LIBS directory.
It will go away as soon as tests are converted to meson,
because the zlib dependency does not propagate from libblock.fa
to the Makefile-build unit tests.

When pixman is not installed (or too old), but virglrenderer is available
and "configure" has been run with "--disable-system", the build currently
aborts when trying to compile vhost-user-gpu (since it requires pixman).
Let's skip the build of vhost-user-gpu when pixman is not installed or
too old. Instead of adding CONFIG_PIXMAN, it is simpler to move the
detection to pixman.

If there are less than 2 arguments in version_ge(), the second
'shift' prints this error:
../configure: line 232: shift: shift count out of range
As Eric suggested, we can use 'shift ${2:+2}' which works out to
'shift 2' if $2 is set, or 'shift' (implicitly shift 1) if $2
is not set.
This patch replaces both 'shift; shift' occurrences in version_ge()
with 'shift ${2:+2}'.

The most interesting or most complicated part here is the syscall_nr.h
generators. In order to keep the generation logic all in meson.build,
I am adding to config_target the name of the .tbl file, and making the
generated file syscall<SUFFIX>_nr.h for input file syscall<SUFFIX>.tbl.
For architectures where the input file is not named syscall_nr.tbl,
syscall_nr.h has to be a source file; it's just a forwarder for x86
(i386/x86_64), while for MIPS64 it chooses between N32 and N64 ABIs.

This shows how to do some "computations" in meson.build using its array
and dictionary data structures, and also a basic usage of the sourceset
module for conditional compilation.
Notice the new "if have_system" part of util/meson.build, which fixes
a bug in the old build system was buggy: util/dbus.c was built even for
non-softmmu builds, but the dependency on -lgio was lost when the linking
was done through libqemuutil.a. Because all of its users required gio
otherwise, the bug was hidden. Meson instead propagates libqemuutil's
dependencies down to its users, and shows the problem.
