Subject: [HACKERS] linux/alpha patches
These patches lay the groundwork for a Linux/Alpha port. The port doesn't
actually work unless you tweak the linker to put all the pointers in the
first 32 bits of the address space, but it's at least a start. It
implements the test-and-set instruction in Alpha assembly, and also fixes
a lot of pointer-to-integer conversions, which is probably good anyway.
In particular, no more compiled-in default for PGDATA or LIBDIR. Commands
that need them need either invocation options or environment variables.
PGPORT default is hardcoded as 5432, but overrideable with options or
environment variables.
There is a support routine in the standard 4.4BSD C library
called "err()". There is also a utility routine in
.../src/backend/bootstrap/bootstrap.c
with the same name.
Here's a patch that renames the pg95 routine to something a little
more sane. As a bonus, one more bit of system-specific code leaves
the system...
