015cd734f0 When checking the return code from BRoster::Launch(), always check for
B_ALREADY_RUNNING and don't treat it as error condition. See BeBook
documentation for more details. This bug resulted in urlwrapper opening a
Terminal and trying to use wget on Bookmark files that are supposed to open
in WebPositive (or any other browser), in the case that this browser was
already running.

Absolutely needs to go into alpha2. ;-)

e2e160328b * Revert MinSize() and PreferredSize() to the normal BView variants, since unlike the comment says GetPreferredSize() actually looks at the content of the listview to determine the size.

b513501fe4 * When a BMenuItem contains a submenu, and that menu IsLabelFromMarked(), use its preferred width as the content width in GetContentSize().
This fixes problems with the Min/PreferredSize() calculations for BMenuField, with a Menu that IsLabelFromMarked().

b588e644ee * Changed AboutSystem to only show the translated language names.
* Added the same hack to ReadOnlyBootPrompt that I put into Locale to
  work-around the missing font overlays in the app_server; IOW we use some
  heuristics to decide which language to show.

96eaa02e8f * Changed BLocaleRoster::GetLanguage() to a signature that makes more sense,
and looks more like the rest of the API.
* Also, it will now return an appropriate error code if the language couldn't
  be allocated (anything else than B_OK is an improvement :-)).
* Several changes in BLanguage:
  - GetName() now gets a BString reference, also
  - it now returns the name in its own language, ie. for German this would
    always be "deutsch", no matter the current language settings, and finally,
  - it now empties the string it gets before adding the name.
  - added GetTranslatedName() that behaves like the previous version.
  - added const where it made sense (ie. almost everywhere).
  - Code() now returns the code of the language only.
  - ID() now returns the full ID of this language, ie. including country,
    variant, and keywords if any.
  - added Country(), and Variant().
  - renamed IsCountry() to IsCountrySpecific().
  - added IsVariant().
* Cleaned up Language.h, minor cleanup in LocaleRoster.cpp.
* Removed the whole move item logic from LanguageListView; while this was not
  only spaghetti code, it doesn't make much sense in the first place.
* Instead of removing stuff from the left, and even worse, moving all countries
  for a language even if only one had been dragged, we now only mark the items
  that are already in the preferred list, and only those.
* Fixed various mixups of FullList*() vs. *() methods that could lead to things
  like bug #5896.
* Pressing the delete key in the preferred list view will now remove the
  language.
* Moved LocaleWindow specific message constants to LocaleWindow.cpp; Locale.h
  is supposed to contain application wide constants.
* The drop logic is now in LocaleWindow.
* We now make sure that each base language can only be in the list once.
* Lots of cleanup, even though I mostly replaced spaghettie code with different
  looking spaghettie code - still, I think things have slightly improved.

b89a43d65f * Applied patch by Jorma Karvonen which localizes the app. Thanks!
* Fixed issues in the patch, global initializers are executed before the
   application constructor, and thus before loading the fAppCatalog! Please
   always at least test-run the application which you patch!
 * Removed BeOS support, as it no longer builds for BeOS anyway. (Even before
   this patch)
 * Fixed broken layout code (setting layout on BScrollView).
 * Simplyfied view hierarchy.
 * Coding style cleanups.

13fa4c845a * Introduced new area creation flag CREATE_AREA_DONT_COMMIT_MEMORY.
map_backing_store() doesn't commit memory when this flag is given.
* Used the new flag vm_copy_area(): We no longer commit memory for read-only
  areas. This prevents read-only mapped files from suddenly requiring memory
  after fork(). Might improve the situation on machines with very little RAM
  a bit.
  We should probably mark writable copies over-committing, since the usual
  case is fork() + exec() where the child normally doesn't need more than a
  few pages until calling exec(). That would significantly reduce the memory
  requirement for jamming the Haiku tree.

08b3ae9bb2 * RemoveFromVSList was failing to actually remove some poses due to a buggy optimisation. This was causing calls on invalid poses in many places in the PoseView code (icon mode). This fixes #4322 (and duplicate #5780). This should also fix #3828. Please test.
I took the conservative approach and the penalty is really minimal if even not at all perceptible as i've measured. I decided to go this way as PoseView code is very fragile and depends on many of those "loose assertions" to be valid. This conservative approach also allows to confidently include the fix in alpha2:
+alphabranch

   Besides those "wise" reasons, the thing is that i've wasted too many hours already this week and in the past due that VSPoseList/PoseList syncing fragility. I'm not willing to fix the optimisation of a broken design that i've already experimentally rewriten two times already, and that i (or any mentally sane person) will finally ditch sooner or later :)

fa0c1e96a0 Hopefully the last work on the MTRR code for the time being:
Since we also force uncacheability via the PTEs, it is no longer necessary to
use MTRRs for uncacheable ranges. It is recommended, which is why we still do
it, if possible, but when we run out of MTRRs, the algorithm ignores
uncacheable ranges now -- iteratively it increases the minimum size of ranges
to drop until the available MTRRs suffice.
Should fix #5703 and #5865.

68a1479cc6 Fix #5788 by overhauling the Locale preflet a bit:
* InitiateDrag() now makes sure that either a number of top-level items
  or a group of subitems sharing the parent is being dragged - anything
  else doesn't really make sense and results in mayhem and/or crashes
* LocaleWindow now tries harder to keep the language listview sorted
* when moving around items between the two listviews, they are no longer
  copied (and partly leaked), but the same items are now just moved over
* cleanup here and there
This is still somewhat of a mess - I recommend splitting the two listviews at least (as they actually behave differently) - maybe it would be better to pick the available languages from a popup-menu instead of keeping them in a listview?

fixes the problem that the CPU initiating the call could make the next call

could almost reliably reproduce it with qemu -smp 2 (would hang the late boot

theoretical problem in main(): The boot CPU could run fully through the early

d62afe7ab0 VMUserAddressSpace::LookupArea(): Although only a read-lock is the
precondition for calling the function it read/write accessed the fAreaHint
attribute in a non-atomic manner. I.e. if executed concurrently by two
threads of the same team one could return the wrong area. The most likely
problem could be caused in vm_soft_fault(), leading to pages being added to
the wrong caches.
The bug itself is inherited from NewOS, but is triggered way more likely
since the page daemon unmaps inactive pages (r35485). Probably fixes #5413.
Might also fix the sporadically occurring crashes/asserts in the hoard
allocator -- at least inactive pages being replaced by zeroed ones would be
an excellent explanation.

63ebfa8d08 When creating Trash directories, Tracker would only set the hidden and/or icon attributes at startup for volumes mounted at that point in time. Volumes mounted later would have the directory created, but not marked hidden or otherwise attributed, which would lead to confusing situations where the root Trash dirs would appear randomly while browsing the filesystem.
Instead, Tracker now always writes those attributes when calling FSGetTrashDir(), which is reused by FSCreateTrashDirs(). Fixes ticket #5827.

I've been investigating the issue in depth, it's there since the first opentracker revision, so i even installed R5 and built/debugged opentracker to confirm it was indeed needed on R5. That would be another case of undocumented (misdocumented) workaround for an R5 bug, ie: BMenu would steal the drop message although the mouse isn't over it anymore (Stefano idea?). da72ff2672 Changed the resolving of the best handler for a MIME type to consider other
supporting apps of the sub-type only when there is a preferred handler for the
sub-type configured at all. In this case, it is assumed that the super-type
preferred handler is not really suitable. In the case when no sub-type
preferred handler is configured, the super-type preferred handler will always
get precedence, even if there are applications installed that declare direct
support for the sub-type. This makes the behavior more consistent/deterministic
and the "Open With" menu that Tracker displays will have the checkmark at
the app again that will really be used to open the type by default. Should
fix #5821 for good, as suggested by Axel.

b1e06d23ce * The "page_stats" command does now also print the longest contiguous runs of
free respective free and cached pages.
* Removed the unused vm_page_allocate_page_run_no_base().
* vm_page_allocate_page_run() (and allocate_page_run()):
  - Use vm_page_reserve_pages() instead of vm_page_try_reserve_pages(), i.e.
    wait until the reservation succeeds.
  - Now we iterates two times through the pages to find a suitable page run. In
    the first iteration it only looks for free/clear pages, in the second
    iteration it also considers cached pages. This increases the chance of the
    function to succeed, when a lot of caching is going on.
    This reduces the amount of memory required to use the IOCache when booting
    off the anyboot Live CD to around 160 MB in qemu. It also seems to work with
    128 MB, but the syslog indicates that some memory allocations fail, which
    is not exactly inspiring confidence.

da24e53cf8 Changed the behavior for BRoster::FindApp(), Launch() and related functionality:
Instead of only checking the preferred applications of a given MIME type and its
super type (i.e. "text/html" and "text"), build a list of all supporting apps,
where the preferred types of the sub and super type lead the respective
sections of the list. Then try to find the first valid application in the list.

This makes it possible to double click "Welcome" on the Desktop, even though
the text/html MIME type still has BeZillaBrowser set as preferred application.
Previously it would launch StyledEdit, even though WebPositive was readily
available.

The previous behavior was probably implementing exactly the BeOS behavior, but
I can't see a good reason why we should be compatible here. Until now, my
testing has also not revealed any regression.

f14480bc2c Essentially rewrote the IOCache to use a VMCache and unmapped pages for
caching (similar to the file cache) instead of contiguous areas. This is
probably a little bit slower, but integrates better with the VM -- the
caching doesn't increase memory pressure and the least recently used pages
will automatically be recycled when needed.
There are still memory allocation issues on machines with little memory. The
USB stack apparently tries to allocate a rather big chunk of contiguous
memory, which fails when all not otherwise bound memory is used for caches,
since the VM functions for allocating contiguous memory consider only free
pages ATM.

574e5742ad Optionally use the IOCache instead of the IOScheduler (specified by
USE_IO_CACHE macro in the header). Currently disabled, though. It works fine,
if the machine has a good deal of RAM. I tested with the anyboot CD -- the
boot and installation times drop dramatically. On machines with little RAM
there are issues, though. Apparently the cache isn't drained fast enough, so
that other allocations can fail.

d49d3f60d8 * Playlist::SetCurrentItemIndex() will keep the index in range when requesting
an index greater than CountItems(). (Setting an index smaller than 0 will
   still work.) This change will prevent the window from setting an invalid
   current playlist item index when the end of the last file is reached. The
   negative effect of this would be that the transport buttons would indicate
   seemingly confused navigation capabilities (being able to skip to the *next*
   item from the last item, internally it true (you can skip from -1 to 0), but
   the player still showed the last item as currently loaded item)...
 * ControllerView::TogglePlayback() will now check if the end of the last item
   is reached and go to the first playlist item then.

50a2f6d7b2 Puh... basically this is the patch by "yourpalal" from ticket #5690, which
converts the FileTypes preflet to use layout management. However, I had to
revert r36252, apply the patch and then manually add r36252 back on top.
I have fixed issues both in the layout management patch (broken layout
in the ApplicationTypesWindow) as well as the translation (untranslated labels
in alerts) and other problems with composed strings (one problem remains, but
already had a TODO). However, the hard work was taken care of by yourpalal!
