7e26ad5af7 Add functions to the old-style PCI bus manager to reserve a device from an old-style driver for exclusive use. This should help making OSS and native audio drivers mutually exclusive. Used in es1370 and hda drivers as examples. OSS must still be fixed to use it too though.

533cba7eff bonefish + axeld:
* Reverted r31809 as it introduced a race condition; if the I/O request had been
  notified, it could already been deleted at that point.
* Instead, we need to notify the request in each file system/driver that uses
  it. Added new notify_io_request() function that does that exactly.
* Added a TODO comment to the userlandfs where the request notification needs
  a bit more thought.

8e1857f795 * Completely rework the USB HID driver to make use of the HID framework
introduced earlier.
* Reworked the previous device classes to make them ProtocolHandlers handling
  their respective input_server <-> driver protocol.
* Implement setting report item data and building/sending reports based on that.
* Remove the old HID parsing code.

This enables us to use all HID devices as we now parse and use the HID
descriptors/reports. Non-boot-porotocol devices should therefore work.

The next step will be to implement a generic input/output framework in userland
that can communicate with a generic protocol handler in usb_hid. This will then
enable applications to make use of all the non-mapped HID stuff directly.

7f33d2c159 I am trying to help a bit with the transition from IDE to ATA stack.
* Copied ide_adapter.h as ata_adapter.h in attempt to further
  separate the two stacks.
* Continued renaming stuff in drivers/bus/ATA.h
* Make all the busses/ata drivers include the new headers,
  specifically ata_types.h, ata_adapter.h and bus/ATA.h,
  they were all including ide_types and bus/IDE.h still
* Some renaming of global variables for coding style consistency
* Removed the promise driver from the build, it's not used on the
  image and I don't believe it compiled even for the old IDE stack.
* There is no more Command Queueing in the new ATA stack, so I
  removed the capability indication from the busses/ata drivers
  and ata_adapter.h.

The new ATA stack still boots fine on my computer and I proof-read
the diff like two times. Basically, this was a careful search&replace
job only. The only things I am not sure about is renaming some
publishing related strings, but it seems to all work fine.

3cf43c2651 Removed the fs_vnode_ops::create_dir() parameter for returning the ID of the

were ignoring the parameter anyway.

3684e40bb8 * Introduce a (private) flag B_NO_HANDLED_INFO for install_io_interrupt_handler.
It causes the interrupt handler to be inserted at the very end of the list
  instead of at the top. It is intended to be used as a workaround when a
  interrupt handler cannot know if it actually handled the interrupt. This
  should never be used by native drivers. Also if we know that the result is
  not valid because of this flag we won't disable the vector in case we count
  many unhandled interrupts as those numbers are then unreliable.
* Moved B_NO_LOCK_VECTOR to be a private flag as well.
* Made the interrupt handler list a simple manually maintaned singly linked list
  instead of the doubly linked one used with insque and remque as it greatly
  simplifies things for such an easy use case and is more compact.

a26c243920 * Adding volume ops to the overlay filesystem.
* Remove the previous method of applying the overlay by flags. In the future the
  overlay can just be mounted as a filesystem layer. This is probably how layers
  were intended to work in the first place.
* Move the filesystem module info and filesystem name from the fs_mount to the
  fs_volume structure. Filesystem layering is done by having multiple layered
  volumes and we want to be able to have a different fs per layer.
* Adapt VFS code to this move.
* Implement mounting layered filesystems. Specifying multiple filesystems
  separated by a colon on mount will cause the layers to be set up and the
  corresponding filesystems to be mounted at that layer.

00405f2286 * Add an additional argument to get_vnode() that gets the fs_vnode_ops of the
node. That is needed for a layered filesystem to be able to construct a full
  fs_vnode out of a volume/inode pair.
* Adapt places where get_vnode is used. Sadly this is a C API and we can't just
  use a default NULL for that argument.
* Introduce a flag B_VNODE_WANTS_OVERLAY_SUB_NODE that can be returned in the
  flags field of a fs get_vnode call. A filesystem can use this flag to indicate
  that it doesn't support the full set of fs features (attributes, write support)
  and it'd like to have unsupported calls emulated by an overlay sub node.
* Add a perliminary overlay filesystem that emulates file attributes using files
  on a filesystem where attributes aren't supported. It does currently only
  support reading attributes/attribute directories though. All other calls are
  just passed through to the super filesystem.
* Adjust places where a HAS_FS_CALL() is taken as a guarantee that the operation
  is supported. For the overlay filesystem we may later return a B_UNSUPPORTED,
  so make sure that in that case proper fallback options are taken.
* Make the iso9660 filesystem request overlay sub nodes. This can be fine tuned
  later to only trigger where there are features on a CD that need emulation
  at all.

If you happened to know the attribute file format and location you could build
an iso with read-only attribute support now. Note that this won't be enough to
get a bootable iso-only image as the query and index support is yet missing.

c33667d400 Fixing warnings under GCC4 in preparation to enable -Werror there as well:

  in our cases.

4612433715 * Added parameter "size_t align" to file_map_translate(). If > 1, the
vector at the end of the file will be aligned to the given value.
* BFS uses an alignment of 512 bytes (should be block size of the
  underlying device or BFS block size, whatever is less), which should
  be fine, since file data are only stored in BFS blocks. This totally
  avoids any partial operations at the I/O scheduler level, thus saving
  disk operations. Not that I could measure any performance difference.
  Theoretically it should help a lot though, particularly when dealing
  with lots of small files, since we avoid using bounce buffers, which
  are (a) limited in number and (b) require copying of the data.

06ba3f0acb * Added two new ways to retrieve an icon from a device:
- B_GET_ICON_NAME: returns the name of an icon. This will then be read from
    a predefined location on disk (not yet implemented). This would also allow
    to add specifiers like "-boot", or "-fat|bfs|ntfs|...", and have special
    icons for those.
  - B_GET_VECTOR_ICON: retrieves the vector icon of a device, if any.
* get_device_icon(BBitmap*, ...) now supports other color spaces than B_CMAP8.
* Added get_device_icon(), BPartition::GetIcon(), and BVolume::GetIcon()
  variants that can also retrieve the icon data directly (like
  BNodeInfo::GetIcon()).
* Reenabled the previous BPartition::GetIcon(), based on a patch by
  Justin O'Dell - this fixes #1391.
* Tracker's MountMenu class now uses B_RGBA32 icons, instead of B_CMAP8.
* Added vector icon to scsi_disk, and scsi_cd. The former doesn't have any
  special removable icon, though.
* Header cleanup, added/updated license, whitespace cleanup.
* Marked deprecated/obsolete driver ioctls in Drivers.h.
* Removed OpenBeOS namespace in the headers I touched that still had them.

* Instead of using the block_io module, scsi_disk (and scsi_cd) are now
  exporting a device on their own, and use an I/O scheduler with an appropriate
  DMA resource.
* There are still lots of TODOs, and it can easily panic - don't update if
  you intend to demo Haiku.
* scsi_periph now only has an io() function that get an io_operation, instead
  of the previous read/write functions, moved preferred CCB size from those
  functions into the device registration.
* Changed all scsi_periph files to C++.
* scsi_cd ported, too, but untested.
* Removed block_io from image - it will be removed completely soon.
* Temporarily commented an ASSERT() in the ATA bus manager (in case you use
  it); it's sometimes triggered by the code now, and I haven't yet looked into
  the issue -- doesn't seem to harm, at least.

3c1a3047a4 * Added file_cache_is_enabled() function.
* Added file_map_set_mode() function that you can use to keep a whole file
  cached. This is needed for the swap file support: FILE_MAP_CACHE_ALL will
  not only precache all file_io_vecs when called, but it will also cause all
  file_map_translate() calls to fail that would require further caching (ie.
  if the file size had changed).
* Updated the fs_shell file map code to the latest one (with several bug fixes).

7491000f20 Added functions file_cache_{disable,enable}(). They allow to disable
actual caching in the file cache, i.e. all reads and writes go directly
to the underlying device. The implementation is not quite complete,
since the VM can still add pages to the cache when the file is mmap()ed,
which can lead to inconsistencies.

7f12cc54a7 * It is now supported that I/O operations and requests are only handled
partially (e.g. due to hitting the end of file). The respective
  classes have grown new methods and attributes to deal with that. The
  "finished" callbacks have got additional parameters to indicate
  whether the transfer was only partial and how much has been
  transferred. Other callbacks and functions have a size_t* in/out
  parameter instead of a simple size_t, now.
* vfs_{read,write}_pages() do now use the I/O request framework instead
  of the underlying FS's {read,write}_pages() hooks (those should be
  unused now). Furthermore they've got an additional "flags" parameter,
  which is passed to IORequest::Init(), i.e. it allows to specify that
  the given vecs refer to physical addresses.
* The file cache's read_into_cache() reads directly into physical
  pages, now.
* Fixed bug in DoIO::IO(): The offset was not adjusted, so that all
  pages were incorrectly transferred from/to the same location.
* Fixed broken subrequest scheduling loop head in
  do_iterative_fd_io_iterate().
* Adjusted the test driver and implemented its io() hook. Using this
  driver I/O requests are passed all the way from the VFS/VM to the
  driver and through the I/O scheduler. It even seems to work. :-)
* Added missing const to the iovec* parameter of the IORequest::Init()
  methods.
* Disabled some debug output by default. Added new optional debug
  output.

ec598fe493 * Added FS interface hooks io() and cancel_io(). The former is supposed
to provide asynchrounous (or only synchronous, if asynchronous is not
  supported) I/O request support. It will eventually replace
  {read,write}_pages(). None of the FS implementations implement them
  yet.
* Implemented some support functions for request-based I/O. File system
  implementations can use do_fd_io() which passes an I/O request to the
  layer responsible for a given FD, and do_iterative_fd_io(), which
  translates a request for a file to subrequests for the underlying
  device and passes them on. Both fall back to synchrounous processing
  when the io() hook is not supported.
  Furthermore added vfs_synchronous_io() which should be handy for the
  devfs to perform io_requests synchronously for devices that don't
  support the io() hook.

7ffafac8d7 * Reorganized the FS interface a little:
- Moved most file_system_module_info hooks into separate structures.
    Those that operate on mounted volumes to fs_volume_ops, those
    operating on a vnode to fs_vnode_ops.
  - Got rid of the fs_volume, fs_cookie, fs_vnode typedefs. We use void*
    again.
  - Instead of a void* volume and node cookie hooks are passed a
    fs_volume and fs_vnode structure pointer, which contain the cookie
    and an ops pointer (fs_volume a few more things).
  - The VFS {new,publish,get,...}_vnode() functions take a fs_volume*
    instead of the volume ID. So does vfs_get_fs_node_from_path().
  - Added type and flags arguments to publish_vnode() and the
    get_vnode() hook and removed the type argument from lookup() hook.
    Added vnode::type using formerly unused bits to store the node type.
    Simplified a few things in the VFS due to the now always available
    node type.
  - Added fs_volume_ops::{create,delete}_sub_vnode() and
    fs_vnode_ops::get_super_vnode() hooks. They are used to support file
    system layers, e.g. allowing to extend an FS not supporting BeOS
    attribute with attribute support. Needs some more work in the VFS.
  - Added fs_vnode_ops::create_special_node() hook for creating special
    nodes (e.g. FIFOs).
* Adjusted the built-in file systems and BFS according to the interface
  changes. Removed all other FSs from the image for the time being.
  We'll see whether further API changes are necessary before porting
  them.
* Adjusted the bfs_shell accordingly.
* Implemented create_special_node() in rootfs to support special nodes.
* Added support for FIFOs:
  - Added syscall _kern_create_fifo() (used by mkfifo()), which creates
    a special node (type S_IFIFO) in the respective file system.
  - When a special node is published the VFS creates a respective sub
    node. Currently only FIFOs are supported.
  - Added a little support for FIFO subnodes by using functionality from
    the pipefs.
  - Added mkfifo to the image. It can create FIFOs in the rootfs, but
    the FIFOs aren't really usable ATM, since they still work like
    pipes, i.e. readers and writers need to have them open at the same
    time.
* Some smaller changes in the VFS:
  - Made the *_CALL macros nicer to use (vargs).
  - Refactored FS entry lookup into new function lookup_dir_entry().
  - create_vnode() no longer just calls the FS create() hook. First it
    looks up the entry and uses open_vnode(), if it already exists. This
    is necessary for two reasons: 1) The FS might not support create()
    while still allowing to open() entries. 2) When the FS has other
    layers on to of it (or the respective node) it might not be
    responsible for opening the node.

a121b8c83c * Added a new flag for write stat: B_STAT_SIZE_INSECURE that allows a
file system to not fill newly created space with zeros.
  BFile::SetSize() now uses this, while [f]truncate() does not. This
  is only a temporary work-around until BFS supports sparse files.
* Apps that want to reserve space to fill up later should use
  BFile::SetSize() for now, as this will be a lot faster than
  [f]truncate().
* cache_io() and the functions below now use a special mode when you
  pass in a NULL buffer: for read access, the cache is only populated
  (useful for prefetching), for write access, the file is filled with
  zeros.
* Implemented BFS's Inode::FillGapWithZeros() using this method now.

f87d72d788 Introduce a B_NO_LOCK_VECTOR flag to be used with install_io_interrupt_handler().
When specified it desigantes that the interrupt handler should not lock the
vector with a spinlock when executing the installed interrupt handlers. This
is necessary to allow the same interrupt vector to be handled in parallel on
different CPUs. And it is required for the CPU halt to work synchronously when
there is more than one AP CPU. Though the acquire_spinlock() should cause IPIs
to be processed, only this fixed the SMP_MSG_FLAG_SYNC problem for me.
Not locking is safe as long as it is guaranteed that no interrupt handler is
registered or removed while the interrupt handler is running. We can guarantee
this for the SMP interrupt handlers we install in arch_smp_init() as they are
never uninstalled. Probably this flag should be made private though.
Restored the SMP_MSG_FLAG_SYNC when entering the kernel debugger.

5d0afa4e4e * cache_detach_sub_transaction() didn't really work: it did not put all needed
blocks into the new transaction, but it would set that transaction on all
  blocks of the old transaction, too. Also, it did not correctly update the
  num_blocks/sub_num_blocks fields of the old transaction. Even worse, it did
  return B_OK instead of the ID of the new transaction...
* get_writable_cached_block() did not correctly maintain the number of blocks
  in the sub transaction.
* write_cached_block() did not free the original_data of a block when it wrote
  it back as part of a previous transaction.
* Changed "cookie" for cache_next_block_in_transaction() to "long", so it will
  be 64 bits when needed.
* Improved the API for detaching sub transactions: you can now get the blocks
  of only the main (parent) transaction as well, added new
  cache_block_in_main_transaction() function.
* BFS now flushes the log when there is no space left for the current
  transaction.
* _WriteTransactionToLog() allocated a "vecs" array, but never freed it.
* _WriteTransactionToLog() now also supports detaching the current sub
  transaction if the whole thing is getting too large (it will now also panic
  if that doesn't work out).
* Removed a useless optimization: making the blocks available in the cache
  isn't really needed, as all blocks in a transaction are locked into the
  cache, anyway.
* Implemented Transaction::WriteBlocks().
* Minor cleanup, removed some dead code, fixed warnings in the fs_shell's
  block_cache when compiled with debug output on.

3d268eda3d * Extracted file_map API out of the file cache - it's now an optional service
that can be used by file systems.
* Changed the way the file cache works: instead of reading/writing to the
  underlying device directly, it can now be used for any data source, ie.
  also network file systems.
* As a result, the former pages_io() moved to the VFS layer, and can now be
  called by a file system via {read|write}_file_io_vec_pages() (naming
  suggestions are always welcomed :-)). It now gets an FD, and uses that to
  communicate with the device (via its fs_{read|write}_pages() hooks).
* The file_cache_{read|write}() functions must now be called without holding
  an I/O relevant file system lock. That allows the file cache to prepare the
  pages without colliding with the page writer, IOW the "mayBlock" flag can
  go into the attic again (yay!).
* This also results in a much better performance when the system does I/O and
  is low on memory, as the page writer can now finally write back some pages,
  and that even without maxing out the CPU :)
* The API changes put slightly more burden on the fs_{read|write}_pages()
  hooks, but in combination with the file_map it's still pretty straight
  forward. It just will have to dispatch the call to the underlying device
  directly, usually it will just call its fs_{read|write}_pages() hooks
  via the above mentioned calls.
* Ported BFS and FAT to the new API, the latter has not been tested, though.
* Also ported the API changes to the fs_shell. I also completely removed its
  file cache level page handling - the downside is that device access is no
  longer cached (ie. depends on the host OS now), the upside is that the code
  is greatly simplified.

bf95c9aee6 * The shadow_changed() FS and partitioning system hooks take an
additional partition_data* child parameter now.
* _user_get_partitionable_spaces() doesn't need to copy the buffer into
  the kernel, since it is no input parameter. It also copies back the
  actual partitionable spaces count on error, now -- B_BUFFER_OVERFLOW
  is returned when the buffer was too small, but then the count must be
  returned too.
* Fixed several instances of syscall implementations that unloaded a disk
  system, although they didn't load it in the first place. This screwed
  up the load count with undesirable consequences.
* _user_create_child_partition() would set the size to the supplied
  offset.
* Fixed broken loop in KPhysicalPartition::CreateShadowPartition().
* KPartition::RemoveChild() notified the listeners about the wrong
  event.
* Intel partitioning module:
  - The *_get_partitionable_spaces() correctly return B_BUFFER_OVERFLOW
    now, if the supplied buffer is too small.
  - Implemented a part of pm_shadow_changed(), which creates and updates
    the PartitionMap, so that the validate_*() hooks have a chance to
    work at all.

* intel partitioning system:
  - Removed passing around block sizes. We require 512 byte sectors
    anyway. In fact using the parent partition's block size was even
    wrong.
  - Simplified writing the partition map sector.
  - Simplified and corrected the partition map initialization.
  - We don't fail identifying a partition anymore, if the partition map
    contains no partitions. We would never identify a freshly
    initialized partition map before.
  - Made pm_identify() more intelligent: It determines the priority to
    return depending on whether the partition is the device itself and
    whether we have recognized child partitions.

* Simplified the notification framework: removed the updater stuff completely;
  it was only there to account for some peculiarities of the node monitor which
  we now solved differently.
* NotificationListener no longer includes a doubly linked list link for convenience;
  it might want to listen to more than just one service.
* NotificationService cannot have an abstract destructor.
* Changed the _user_stop_watching() syscall to mirror the Be API; ie. it's no
  longer possible to just remove some flags separately, just to stop listening
  completely.
* Adapted the node monitor implementation to live in the NodeMonitorService class
  that uses the new notification framework.
* Removed the public kernel node monitor API - it wasn't useful that way since you
  couldn't do a lot with the KMessage in the kernel without using a private API.
  Now you will have to use the (private) notification manager to use the node monitor
  from inside the kernel. At a later point, we might introduce a public API for that,
  too.

badc7b674e yet another fix for #1018, which has at this point blossomed into a reorg of how AP cpus are initialized.
the new cpuid stuff was apparently exacerbating an existing problem where various bits of low level
cpu code (specifically get_current_cpu) weren't really initialized before being used. Changed the
order to set up a fake set of threads to point each cpu at really early in boot to make sure that at
all points in code it can get the current 'thread' and thus the current cpu.
A probably better solution would be to have dr3 point to the current cpu which would then point to the
current thread, but that has a race condition that would require an int disable, etc.

17f83b219d * Switched from the old v2 callback status codes to the new v3 codes
This means that the usb_callback_func now takes a status_t instead of a uint32 status.
Also the error codes are now different. I don't see this as a real problem in binary compatibility, as the status codes were never really documented and most drivers just assumed that a nonzero status meant an error.
Source compatibility breaks for callback functions and error defines. I fixed (hopefully) all places in the tree that are currenty included in the image and affected by the change.
* Corrected error reporting in UHCI and EHCI using the new status codes.
* Fixed a memory leak in EHCI where the async advance interrupt was not triggered in time.
* Fixed another race condition in usb_raw that could cause a crash when a device is removed while a transfer is pending.

5b0ec61f97 * Added USB API Version 3. It's put into USB3.h while the v2 API resides in USB2.h. USB.h just includes USB2.h for now.

b20667b35b {install|remove}_io_interrupt_handler() now correctly handle the B_NO_ENABLE_COUNTER flag.
Lots of cleanup:
- moved B_NO_ENABLE_COUNTER flag definition out of int.h to KernelExport.h, as it's
  described in the BeBook (although it's probably not really used that often :))
- int.c no longer has any platform dependent code (+ 0x20 on interrupt numbers is gone);
  it's now entirely handled in the arch/x86/ section.
- the io_vectors[] is now statically initialized, instead of allocated from the heap
- removed {install|remove}_interrupt_handler(); they weren't that useful, arch_smp_init()
  is now calling install_io_interrupt_handler() correctly instead
- introduced a new arch_int.h header file that currently contains NUM_IO_VECTORS only
  (though on x86, it also has ARCH_INTERRUPT_BASE == 0x20).
- changed the return type from {install|remove}_io_interrupt_handler() from "long" to
  "status_t"
- rearranged and cleaned the PIC initialization code, made the PIC code more prominent
- changed comments that talk about a non existing 8239 (the PIC chip is actually 8259)
- moved arch/x86/interrupts.h to the source directory, as it's not used outside
- added BeOS compatible interrupts_enabled() function, that should replace our
  equivalent (and private) are_interrupts_enabled()

c11886dbbe Now we have a nice structure for handling ACPI fixed events. This means we can do things like make acpi_button block, instead of polling it. Direct register access has gone away. The next revision of the bus manager interface should include namespace traversal and AML control method execution.

5207cc7a8c Proposal for a replacement of the notify_listener() and
send_notification() interface, which I personally find quite ugly.
Each notification type gets its own function, which makes very clear,
which parameters are to be supplied. Also note the addition of the
`name' parameter for the `entry removed' notification and `fromName'
for `entry moved'.

functionality as good as probe(), but that will change soon).

b83a8af4e0 First roll of renames: pnp_node_hamdle is now device_node_handle, pnp_node_attr
is now device_attr, pnp_bus_info bus_module_info, pnp_driver_info driver_module_info, ...
Small cleanup (more would be needed, but this has time).

e189e3d779 header for a kernel mime_table module, so not every fs will bundle its own.
The API makes it possible to later use faster indexed search on the table.
The table could probably also be regenerated by running a script on setmime -dump.
