cgd 85854cb4ad preliminary Alpha support. note that NOT ALL OF THE MODIFICATIONS TO
THE REST OF THE KERNEL ARE IN THE TREE YET.  Also, some of this is
_incredibly_ hack-ish, etc., but it works.
