More compatible yet: sysctl used to be in /usr/sbin, not /sbin, so add both
locations to $PATH before trying to run sysctl.

Merge the MACHINE_ARCH logic from gnu/dist/config.guess, but do this in
a backwards-compatible way (prefer uname -p, but fall back to
/sbin/sysctl -n hw.machine_arch).
