8000972bbe . Have dbsym explicitly suggest increasing SYMTAB_SPACE when
an overflow occurs.
   . Make this error a fatal build time error
   . Move the support for dbsym into the MI Makefile.kern.inc,
     conditional upon the SYMTAB_SPACE option being defined in
     the kernel config file.

171d653219 Overhaul how `build.sh tools' are used:
*	Rename "config.h" to "nbtool_config.h" and
	HAVE_CONFIG_H to HAVE_NBTOOL_CONFIG_H.
	This makes in more obvious in the source when we're using
	tools/compat/config.h versus "standard autoconf" config.h

    *	Consistently move the inclusion of nbtool_config.h to before
    	<sys/cdefs.h> so that the former can provide __RCSID() (et al),
    	and there's no need to protect those macros any more.

These changes should make it easier to "tool-ify" a program by adding:
	#if HAVE_NBTOOL_CONFIG_H
	#include "nbtool_config.h"
	#endif
to the top of the source files (for the general case).

826a14607a Now that <bsd.prog.mk> DTRT if HOSTPROG is defined (i.e, it is a no-op),
there's no need to special-case .include-ing it.

590fe82698 Use MKPICLIB to determine if we should have a dependency on the .a or
_pic.a version of the library.

and libopcodes. Otherwise, depend on the regular library.

3b08abd277 * Eliminate the USE_NEW_TOOLCHAIN variable. Instead, split it into
two variables:

  TOOLCHAIN_MISSING -- set to "yes" on platforms for which there is
  no working in-tree toolchain (hppa, ns32k, sh5, x86_64).

  EXTERNAL_TOOLCHAIN -- if defined by the user, points to the root of
  an external toolchain (e.g. /usr/local/gnu). This enables the cross-build
  framework even for TOOLCHAIN_MISSING platforms.

  If TOOLCHAIN_MISSING is set to "yes", MKGDB, MKBFD, and MKGCC are all
  unconditionally set to "no", since the bits are not there to build.

  If EXTERNAL_TOOLCHAIN is set, MKGCC is unconditionally set to "no",
  since the external toolchain's compiler is not in-sync with the
  in-tree compiler support components (e.g. libgcc).

* Set MACHINE_CPU much earlier in bsd.own.mk, so that more tests in
  that file can use it.

89b1a9ca73 Introduce 3 new MK* variables that have effect in the USE_NEW_TOOLCHAIN
case:

	MKBFD	If set to "no", disables building of libbfd, libiberty,
		and all things that depend on them (binutils/gas/ld, gdb,
		dbsym, mdsetimage).

	MKGDB	If set to "no", disables bulding of gdb.

	MKGCC	If set to "no", disables building of gcc and the
		gcc-related libraries (libg2c, libgcc, libobjc, libstdc++).

These are useful for building platforms for which either of the following
situations are true:

	(1) You have no userland from which to run toolchain2netbsd
	    in order to build the appropriate toolchain build framework.

	(2) The platform which you are building requires a newer set
	    of tools than are currently in the tree (e.g. x86-64, ia64).

b5cd2489b2 Major overhaul of src/tools and host toolchain. Summary of changes:
* Rewrite src/tools Make logic to work like the rest of the tree wrt
  "dependall" and "install". The old "make build" hack is gone.

* Remove the MKTOOLS logic. This was linked to the "make build" hack,
  and was only needed because TOOLDIR originally had no writable default.

* Redo the GNU configure/make logic to make it fit reasonably in a
  BSD make wrapper. Use new ${.ALLTARGETS} variable to scan for
  targets in $(srcdir), and mark them with .MADE: to prevent rebuilding.

* Only build cross tools in src/tools; remove some messy logic in
  src/usr.* and src/gnu/usr.* that would do target filename rewriting
  (improves consistency and readability).

* Add the ability to build cross gdb at tool build time by setting
  MKCROSSGDB (default no) to "yes" in mk.conf.

* Add src/tools/groff and set up paths to work with this cross groff.

aeeee8c24d New BFD-using dbsym(8) written by Simon Burge, with some code
derived from the BFD-using mdsetimage(8).

TODO:
* Use loadfile(), rather than home-grown ELF parsing code (requires
  some changes to loadfile()).
* Support a.out like the gwr's dbsym(8) (this comes for free when
  we switch to loadfile()).
