Add support for FIONWRITE and FIONSPACE ioctls. FIONWRITE reports
...
the number of bytes in the send queue, and FIONSPACE reports the
number of free bytes in the send queue. These ioctls permit applications
to monitor file descriptor transmission dynamics.
In examining prior art, FIONWRITE exists with the semantics given
here. FIONSPACE is provided so that programs may easily determine how
much space is left in the send queue; they do not need to know the
send queue size.
The fact that a write may block even if there is enough space in the
send queue for it is noted in the documentation.
FIONWRITE functionality may be used to implement TIOCOUTQ for Linux
emulation - Linux extended this ioctl to sockets, even though they are
not ttys.

Overhaul the use of nsdispatch(3) by public APIs so that the back-end

methods use va_list in a manner that is directly related to the public API.
This makes it much easier to write dynamic nsswitch backends for getpwent(3).
Per my proposal on tech-userlevel.
Implement getpwgid_r() and getpwnam_r() APIs per the POSIX 1003.1, 2004 Ed.
These aren't fully reentrant or threadsafe yet, because the compat stuff
currently uses non-reentrant data sources (getnetgrent(3), getpwent(3)),
and there is probably some locking to be improved in the backends.
This will be fixed in the near future.
We also need to add _SC_GETPW_R_SIZE_MAX to sysconf(3).

Add support to build the mac68k port with soft-float enabled (i.e., setting
...
MKSOFTFLOAT=yes). The main purpose of this feature is to let NetBSD work
in machines with the 68040LC chip (those that have the FPU bug).
All the work has been done by Bruce O'Neel <edoneel AT sdf.lonestar.org>,
with some very minor changes by me; the patches were being posted to the
port-mac68k mailing list. It has been tested for a long time by several
users, including me.
I have just verified that regular releases, as well as soft-float ones,
continue to build.
There have been no objections to this patch since I asked for them in July
in the port-mac68k list.

Set DEPLIBS appropriately, rather than explictly adding LDADD/DPADD
for various libraries.
Reorder library build order so that libraries that depend upon any

Whilst this change could be done in a more generic manner (and I
intend to work on that), it does remove the need to implement

Add support for SHA1 hashed passwords.
...
The algorithm used is essentially PBKDF1 from RFC 2898 but using
hmac_sha1 rather than SHA1 directly (suggested by smb@research.att.com ).
* The format of the encrypted password is:
* $<tag>$<iterations>$<salt>$<digest>
*
* where:
* <tag> is "sha1"
* <iterations> is an unsigned int identifying how many rounds
* have been applied to <digest>. The number
* should vary slightly for each password to make
* it harder to generate a dictionary of
* pre-computed hashes. See crypt_sha1_iterations.
* <salt> up to 64 bytes of random data, 8 bytes is
* currently considered more than enough.
* <digest> the hashed password.
hmac.c implementes HMAC as defined in RFC 2104 and includes a unit
test for both hmac_sha1 and hmac_sha1 using a selection of the Known
Answer Tests from RFC 2202.
It is worth noting that to be FIPS compliant the hmac key (password)
should be 10-20 chars.

Completely rework how tools/compat is done. Purge all uses/references to

_NETBSD_SOURCE as this makes cross building from older/newer versions of

Ouch. Lint didn't like the last change on sparc64. The reason:
...
<machine/reg.h> plays dirty naming tricks on sparc64 to allow 32bit
compatibility (reg -> reg64 and the parameter in
PTHREAD_REG_TO_UCONTEXT() is called reg). This probably needs to be
fixed separately, but for now reordering the includes will do.

After discussion with christos, turn fgetstr() into an internal function.
...
Its API in inherently non-threadsafe (and it depends on certain properties
of the underlying stdio implementation), so it shouldn't be a first-class
function for general use, polluting the application namespace.
Also remove the FLOCKFILE() code from it - this is under control of the
calling function now.
(XXX I'm not sure whether the FLOCKFILE() should be kept in fgetln(),
this function cannot be used in multiple threads anyway. It doesn't
hurt much, and it might prevent corruption of internal FILE structures.)

There are two instances of getsubopt.c, one in gen, which came by the
...
ways of 386BSD, and one in stdlib, which is from Lite-2. The former was
picked up by the build process and has seen a little more maintenance
while the latter's location is "right", so bring the latter up to par
with the former and dispose of the (now) latter.
Reported by David A. Holland in PR lib/25160, which is worded in a
far less mind-boggling fashion than the above.
