If you're planning on installing

cannot currently be installed to a local disk,
so there's not a lot to do to prepare a machine to run it.
on a hard disc, first make sure it's supported (see above). Then make sure
there's nothing you want to keep on it, since

ability to share a hard disc with RISC OS is at best untested.

can be made to run diskless, getting all its filesystems from an NFS server.
